Gorthaur's Skitarii of Mars

Gorthaur

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I have began work on a small force of Skitarii. So far I have a tech priest finished and a squad of rangers assembled. I am basing them off the mars color scheme. As the red robes were always what I thought of when it came to the Mechanicus, its their iconic look. I haven't decided what to get when these guys are finished, I would have done an ironstrider or walker but they seem a bit overpriced even on ebay. I may do some sicarians or vanguard next however.

Thanks guys,

I finished my first of the Skitarii rangers, this one was a bit more work because of the larger gun and base. He came out quite bright compared to alot of my other work which is a bit strange for me. I think he looks pretty nice though. I noticed I need to do another coat of brown on the base rim though!

Finished two more Skitarii, one with an omnispex. These take a while to paint, 7 more to go.

haha thanks, if you look at the last picture you can see how the antennae on the omnispex snapped off without me noticing. Its broken off twice now, honestly I prefer the look of the data tether.

again great stuff!!,

The omnispex looks more streamlined now tongue.png . are the decals from the standard ranger box or the GW mail only ones??

I know yours are awesome but I found that when I put some gold around the eye rims it made them really POP!

Very nice indeed and as deathspectre said well done on the base, you've hit all the right notes with your martian terrain bases

thanks!

Thanks, the decals are indeed from the standard ranger kit. I couldn't be bothered to spend the money on the big transfer sheet. I was thinking about doing a few brass eye rims for varieties sake, instead of the leadbelcher metal ones ive been doing. Now GW is releasing four more mechanicus kits so ive got alot of money to save up, I definitely want the tech priest dominus and Kataphrons.

Two more rangers finished, one with an arc rifle. The last 3 are in varying stages of completion.

I'm an avid muzzle-driller, so I had to do some research on this for my own Skitarii. According to the artwork in the Codex, the arc rifle shoots from the electrode beneath the big glowing box (technical term) rather than from the box itself. Great work, though!

Ah I should have noticed that, luckily its just a painted black dot to simulate a muzzle hole so I can paint right over it. Same with the galvanic rifles, I usually paint a black dot on the tip for the illusion.

Thanks and yeah that head adds a bit of extra variety, plus its cool to see what their gear looks like beneath the hood. A Sicarian squad is next (infiltrators or Ruststalkers not sure yet), they hasn't shown up in the mail yet though. The backpack and gun wood is painted the same, simply rhinox hide, nuln oil in recesses and skrag brown as a highlight.

Thanks for the recipe List, i'd go with the infiltrators, they seem to be the jack of all trades unit where the rusty's are/can be more of a specialist unit...if i was only going to have one unit it would be the infiltrators.

cheers, Mithril

Thats what I was thinking, plus I kinda like the fluff for them more. Only issue now is how to equip them, ive heard conflicting opinions on whats best, the stubcarbines and swords or tasers and (the other gun, can't remember the name). I could just go with what I like the look of best, but if I ever had to sell them i'd want the best loadout.

Go the tasers and flechette blasters...i know people say What ohmy.png strength 2 ! ,but other poster's on the Ad Mech forum swear they kill MEQ just as well statistically as well as in game...i think that when i get a unit, will be equipping them that way too.

Excellent job on these Skitarii!!! The highlighting is practically 'Eavy Metal quality and you've taken the time to really push the individual details. I have to piggyback on the time sink that painting Skitarii seems to be; my first unit of 10 (using my awful elbow-stabbing painting technique) took me easily twice as long as any of my IG Infantry Squads! This is definitely not an army for the impatient or those who can't stand detail work. msn-wink.gif

Thanks guys,

These guys do take alot more time than the average troop, sometimes I wish I had picked Tyranids! but I much prefer the style of the mechanicus. Luckily the Sicarians ill be doing are simpler than the rangers/vanguard themselves, why? Because theres not as much areas where I could mess up and have to constantly keep tidying up. When your doing endless layers of red cloth and bone color beneath the robes and around the legs you have to keep going and tidying stuff up and that is the real time sink. Ive been selling off some Orks and random models I never painted to raise money so I can keep up with the new releases as well.
