I'm in the process of completing the third Valkyrie's sponson gunners and base to wrap it up; I figured I would update with the Commissar who I finally moved forward with a painting scheme for.  Let me know what you guys think, I also cut a Scion backpack to fit his back to account for the grav chute deployment from the Valkyrie and to ensure he would fit in with the rest of the force.  My inspiration was a mix of Flying Fortress crew colors with the brown bomber leather jackets and light trim (as sheep trim was not an option) and then used the uniform underneath to play with the brown/gray theme.

ok your on a massive roll indeed, this pic is the winner for me though msn-wink.gif cool.png

...

Yeah, I really liked that picture after taking it. I'm dying to find a rampant lion to put on his shield but I haven't found it as a decal yet, it's shown on the Taurox Prime but it's actually part of the mold.

I think that the lion would look fantastic there and that's why I've left his shield barren for so long.

Also, I'm rather fond of this picture too...I haven't posted it yet because I'm already digging into Valkyrie 4 but I thought I would pause and grab a shot of the current Air Cavalry status of the H.E.R.C. (Hazardous Environment Response Cavalry) Strike Force.

I've also knocked out another 10 man squad of Scions, which leaves me at 1 Valkyrie and 10 Scions until the Air Cav Formation is built. I've been dabbling with the idea of providing myself two combined allies that I can switch out as needed - Elysian D-99 and Hazardous Environment Cadian's for Super Heavy/Lord of War action. D-99 explicitly cannot take Lords of War in the Imperial Armour book, so if I'm facing someone with serious fire power it might work out to have the capability of deploying some larger forces in support of my Air Cav.

I could always keep it in theme too as the Marauder Destroyer has been looking like a fantastic challenge that I'd like to undertake. I would also like to add some Avengers into the force but my GW Store is having a Super Heavy/Lord of War competition on its birthday next month and financially the rest of the Air Cav might have to wait. If not the Marauder, I've been toying with the idea of getting a Malcador/Macharius just to keep things original. Any thoughts on this are more than welcome given the financial expenditure needed to get these models. biggrin.png

Expect my next picture post to be big, as I'm going to hold off and post the entire Air Cav with the Scions deployed around them!

Edit: Marauder Destroyer has been ordered and wow does that currency conversion sting. I'm having to hold off on the missiles until a little bit later but at least I can get started on things once it gets here. At the rate I'm moving through this Valkyrie, I'll be able to actually field my Scions at the store when it opens on Wednesday next week. Barring any unforeseen distractions that is!

Perhaps some WHFB transfers might give you the lion? It's a fairly common heraldic symbol though so I'm sure you can find one somewhere smile.png Your colours are excellent, in particular the commissar looks great. If only the Scions had real tanks, I'd love to see your scheme on some proper armour msn-wink.gif

I am with you 100% on painting up some armoured cavalry to go along with my air cavalry. That's why I decided on using the Cadians in Hostile Environment suits as a combined force in order to open up tanks and super heavies. The Elysians will be added in too but D-99 specifically cannot utilize Lords of War at all, so I will most likely be focusing on the Cadian models first. Fluff wise, they will be representing the standard troops of the H.E.R.C. force and the armor is close enough that it's believable they could all be related within the same uniform pattern. I cannot decide between Malcador or Macharius tanks, though I'm leaning toward Malcador if only because I've always thought the tank designs from WW1 were interesting.

The commissar is actually an interesting story since his sword broke shortly after receiving the model. I wasn't sure about putting the las-pistol on him but once I started painting him, I was happy that things went that direction. I also fitted him with a Scion backpack so that it wouldn't appear like he was grav-chuting via sheer will or using his trench coat to glide in! I was aiming for colors that were used in WW2 Flying Fortress crews and fighter jocks, which was drastically different than a normal Commissar but ended up working out nicely!

I hadn't even thought about WHFB decals, that's a fantastic idea. I'll have to look into it later tomorrow, thanks!

Do you still have the Valkyrie sprues?

There's a little plastic trapezoid that's supposed to sit between the two canopies, straddling the rear console and providing the back frame to the front glass. It's easy to miss because the instructions never tell you what to do with it.

It looks like you've left it off all your flyers, which is why you have gaps between the canopy and the hull. It should be easy to add after the fact, provided you can remove the rear canopy without doing too much damage.

(Apologies for turning up all Captain Attention-to-detail after your army's done, but I was building a Valk while browsing colour schemes this afternoon and it kind of leapt out at me.)

I do and I actually left that part off intentionally, which I'm sure is bizarre without knowing why, but what you don't see with my canopies is that they open from the back to the front. I use loctite ultra control gel in two tiny dots at the front corners of the front canopy. The canopies are sealed together at the point they meet with loctite as well and I then paint over it. I don't know that I'd trust this to hold true on all models but with the canopies this allows them to be lifted from the back about 2 inches which then lets me take the engine housing off and show the inside buttons should someone want to check it out in the store.

The ultra gel control gives the glue just enough lee-way to allow for this little trick to work and because all four of my Valkyries have fully completed internals, it's nice to be able to show it off a little. The positioning of the glue also keeps it away from the acrylic cockpit glass so that the smokey look can never occur should I need to replace the glue; which I've only had to do it once and I've popped the top on the Valkyries a ton.

So yeah, I totally agree the bar should be used, I've just created a method that actually requires the two canopies to be merged into one and it worked so well I repeated it on all of the models. I'm weird like that! biggrin.png
