Lengthening dreadnought legs and sculpting pteruges

Recommended Posts

Heyo guys and gals, i need some advice and/or help with some hobby projects of mine.

First, i've decided to lengthen the legs of my dreadnoughts. I've done this by cutting the leg apart the leg between the round hip-part and the "thigh", and then gluing a cut-up part from an assault cannon inbetween.

What i need is some advice on what i should put on top to cover up the part and maybe act as some thigh armour.

Secondly, i'm making some heresy-era indomitus terminators but would really like some help with sculpting pteruges, or maybe loincloths to put between their shoulders and shoulder pads, and over the groin area.

Any and all help would be useful, and if needs be i could post some pictures of how the models look.

Money's a bit tight at the moment, otherwise i'd certainly buy some ready-made ones.

Would prefer to put something smaller on the thighs, i've seen other conversion using a secondary set of leg plates to great effect, though i don't think they'll fit my dreadnoughts very well, since the legs are a bit shorter than other conversions.

Thanks for the advice though!

In my gallery are a few photos of an ironclad I made with additional leg armour. The plates on the "thighs" are from the blood angel furioso kit, I think they were designed as wrist armour for the librarian force weapon.

I'll try to post a link to the pics when I can get to my pc.

Great idea Stercus!

Was toying around with a wrist guard from a furioso, wondering if it would fit, and seeing your dreadnought proofs it would!

Just to add another option here when it comes to buying stuff or simply for inspiration: one and two by Maxmini

And here are some of my own conversions from several years back.

On standing poses or under shoulderpads where they'll be hanging free I'd just use some thin strips of plastic card. The above example was done with 0.5mm plastic card.

The second variant is sculpting, which is what I'd recommend for action poses. I just blocked out the basic shape of what I wanted and then after that had dried went back and added the individual strips and the fold at the top. Since you can always cut and sand the GS once it's dry this is pretty easy to do.

You could also try your hand at using heat to soften the plastic and get more dynamic poses, but it tends to shrink and curl when you use too much heat and you only have a second or two to shape it when you do hit the sweet spot.

Another option would be to use aluminium foil or something like that. It will hold it's shape on it's own and is just as easy to work with as plastic card, i.e. cutting the strips and gluing them down. Might not hold as well if the minis are handled often, so you'll have to be little more careful when handling them. But if you got an old tube of toothpaste, mustard, paint or whatever else you can think of these are also pretty easy to come by.
