I like the 'Artificer' award the way it is. Any painting contest will always be subjective and ultimately come down to the judges personal preference. I think we can all trust Semper to be as impartial as humanly possible. There was a considerable number of worthy entrants this year, but I'm pretty happy with Semper's selection. I think that limiting the award to three joint, overall winners really helps to give the badge a sense of exclusivity.

 

If we wanted to run a forum by forum contest, it would probably be best to leave it in the hands of the Mods responsible for the specific forums. It could be run as an associated competition. Separate but related.

Even though I had the honour of being awarded one, I do think the Artificer Badge is subjective and could be constructed as ´unfair´. Expanding on it would make it even 'unfairer´, especially considering the nature of the BnC and the spirit of the ETL: camaraderie and competition to produce quality miniatures. I can also imagine it to be super hard to pick a favourite for Semper, who's (I'm guessing) the sole judge in awarding it. These are all arguments against the Artificer Badge.

 

On the other hand, it is tradition, and traditions strengthen the feeling of community. So -and I´m directing his mostly to Captain Semper- perhaps you could see the awarding the Artificer Badge like this: as a reward for singlehandedly hosting the largest and best 40K online painting competition on the planet, you get to pick your three favourite miniatures. Turn it around, so to speak: don;t see it as a burden, but as a privilige, which I'm sure the community is very happy to grant you for doing all your work.  

 

As I said, I was very humbled and excited when I found out I got the badge last year, and to me it was certainly an incentive to not let quantity get in the way of quality this year (as I admit did kinda creep into my productivity in the last couple of weeks, last year).

Just to be clear. I'm not against them as they are now and it wouldn't mortally offend me if they were expanded. I just wouldn't vote for them myself.  At the moment they're (as Augustus already said) "Captain Semper's 3 units that stood out the most for me" award.

 

I do need to look at more of the forums and hopefully everyone will do a completion showcase as I hadn't seen any of the Blood Angel stuff and the Deredeo is pretty darn nice.  I've only really checked out the chaos one and some of the HH.

I took my completed vow to my FLGS last night.  Now they know why I've been holed up over the past three months...

It was also good practice for transportation to Adepticon next year - though I'll definitely have to invest in some better carrying cases!

Btw, here's what I think about the Artificer award:

 

Who's the one person that puts in all the work around organizing this event and who is it that has to read through and compile each and every post in every forum?

 

If we are to have an Artificer award, then the aforementioned person is probably the most qualified and deserving to award it, even if it is subjective.

 

 

Edit - I just realized that Augustus said the same thing but yeah....

Thank you guys - I appreciate your views and confidence. This is certainly food for thought for the next ETL - the V anniversary edition! ;)

 

Now let's see more minis painted during ETL IV - I'm un-pinning the main ETL thread on Sunday so let's put some pics in here (it'll still be open for comments mind you but it will not be pinned).

It was a meager 145 points vow, but I was really happy with how it turned out and it was my first ETL ever, so these bikers will always have a sentimental value. :)

Credit where credit is due Captain Semper. You have been fair, quick and consistent in all of your rulings. You evolve the ETL, to keep everyone motivated and you make it a joy to take part in.

You should be rightfully proud of what you have created and nurtured, because I think for many, without the fun, banter and cameraderie of the ETL, a lot of us would have lost all motivation.

So From this Wolf, I say thank you :)

 

I reckon you desreve promotion to Chapter Master ;)

Thank you Dantay but Master of Recruits is good enough a title. Besides it's only one of the number of convoluted titles that I have as a member of the Inner Circle! ;)

Would you consider changing the completion % to a % of vows vs a % of points? I don't know exactly what effect it would have, especially since it might just encourage people to break up large vows, which may or may not be a good thing.

 

Also: Terrible pictures will be replaced by better ones, sometime.....
