Astra... Imperial Guard (with a hint of heresy)...

A while ago, I managed to get hold of a box of OOP plastic Squats. With my collecting head on, I managed to get a few more so I have enough of the helmet wearing heads for a couple of platoons... and a few more besides.

So... I thought I'd put together an Imperial Guard army that was made up of diminutive characters and here is the first little unit; an Engineseer with a couple of servitors:

They are shown with a possible transport but as much as I want hover vehicles (for their marshy planet), I am not sure whether that is the right vehicle for them... Here's a close up of the Engineseer:

After this little unit, I got on with making the first platoon. I wanted them all to have helmets and to have autonomous heavy weapons. I also felt the need to sculpt all of the arms and shorten the lasguns so that they were posed better... and then I added better beards to some... Here's the command squad and two infantry squads:

Finally, here is a random character that will eventually be added to a unit of some sort:

In addition to the troops I have also got a proxie Dreadnought and two proxie Sentinels... along with some Exo Armour that will likely 'count as' terminator armour (once I have converted it)... here's a review:

So there we have it. I have just clipped the next platoon off its sprue ready for cleaning up and am in the process of converting the first Exo Armoured trooper so things are ticking along nicely.

Any comments or questions are welcomed but please bear in mind that I am not a gamer, I just collect miniatures... so rules are really not too much of an issue with me :smile.:

Thank you :)

I just hope when the painting starts, you still think the same :D !

I have started on some Exo-Armour conversions... here's the first finished one with a WIP one in there as well:

Excellent work, great conversions and fantastic greenstuffing (is that a word??)

Have you checked out the Mantic Forge Father range for alternative models?

Edit. Nevermind... I saw that you are. Must learn to read rather than getting distracted with pretty pictures :(

I plan to add a Dreadnought so I expect that they will proxie for Terminators... however, as a non-gamer, the rules aren't too much of an issue with me :)

@ Elmo - I wondered if you'd edit your post :D . I have a bunch of ForgeFathers for Dreadball, Deadzone and Warpath (all for use in a sci-fi setting; with the odd conversion or two). I have chosen to keep them completely separate from my Squats because I don't want a mix of styles across the troops (Exo Armour aside). Here's an example or two of my FF stuff:

Not a lot to show off but I have all sorts of other Mantic stuff that will be put to good use at some point or another :)

So... I guess I've finished the first Exo Squad:

I still have to drill out the barrels but apart from that they are finished. I think the next stuff will be either basic troops or some Sentinels... who knows?! :D

I have quickly assembled my proxy Sentinel (with a Squat for scale):

It will count as an armoured Sentinel with close combat weapon and heavy bolter.

I plan on covering the hole where the head is with a larger head so it should offer more protection.

I assembled this while the beards are drying on the first infantry squad for the second Squat platoon :) (there will be pix soon).

This week has mostly been about travelling but I have managed to get a bit further with the Sentinel Sqn:

I have also ordered a third so that when it arrives, I can get it upto the same standard as these two. Once I've done that, I'll be finishing all three heads together so that I can get them all similar.

I have also been working on the troop squad but am putting together a little guide with them so I won't be posting any pics. Needless to say, they all have neckerchiefs, beards with moustaches and wire pinned into their shoulder sockets, ready for the next stage. I will be converting the weapons next, ready to pin to the bodies so that the 'wire arms' can be bent to shape ready for the putty to be added.

With all that in mind... my thoughts turn to what's next.

I have got planned (so far):

1x Commander (Exo armour)

with command section (5x Exo armour)

Exo Armour squad (5x Exo armour)

Dreadnought

2x Infantry platoon (each with command and 2 squads)

1x Veteran platoon (with command and 2 squads)

1x Sentinel Sqn (3x Sentinel)

That's about it for now... so what's next after that? I have had Wyverns suggested as a support weapon and Chimeras... Hmmm.... :)

Hey Inso, have you considered signing up a vow or two for the ETL? The Guard could use all the assistance we can muster, and well, getting Squats in on the action would be excellent. Really loving the new Sentinels, by the way. Be sure to get a group photo together as I'd love to see these guys en masse! :)

Unfortunately, I cannot do pledges. I put a lot of pressure on myself during projects and I think that I would end up ditching the whole thing if I had to work to deadlines as well. The stuff I do (sculpting) can be completely reliant on drying times so it would also be difficult to set reasonable targets. Maybe once I start painting, I'll join in because I have a rough idea of how quickly I can paint.

Once I have finished the first squad for the second platoon, I'll put together a 'group hug' for you :)

In the meantime... I thought I'd make a start on the dreadnought (Sentinel and Squat for size comparison):

Obviously, the conversion is at an early stage but the original kit is from here:

I am really quite pleased how these are turning out. I have managed to get a hint of 'AT Votoms' in there... anyway, here are the almost finished Sentinels:

I only have minimal tidying to do and they are finished :) .

So... what's next in the army? I completely forgot about a commander... so I threw one together :) :

And for finished pix of the Sentinels, Exo Commander and an overall army pic... you could visit here (if you wanted :) ):

Thanks :) I appreciate the kind words.

I am coming to a point where the first two platoons are finished and I want to make the third one. There is a problem... do I stick with the bald/capped heads in the squat box and add beards like I have done with the helmet heads OR do I mix and match the plastic heads but give them berets like thes guys? :

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d161/Inso/GW%20Squats/SquatWIP41_zpsqjb7tf63.jpg

It's a small amount of extra work but when done in batches it isn't an issue... Hmmm... decisions, decisions...
