Modeling Veterans of the Long War

I always pay the points for this upgrade because I so far, fight exclusively loyalists. However, ETL has motivated me to find a way to represent this on the models, so there is no doubt that they are indeed veterans. What are some ways I can convey my men's veteran status? In particular, oblits, terminators, lords and sorcerers, and raptors.

For me, I'd count my trophies as a way to show my Iron Warriors Veteran of the Long war states.  Shown all the armies they've fought since the Heresy to current 40k era.  As well as being base on actual games my IW have fought since collecting them since 2001 up to know.

Thanks for the quick replies. I think I can manage a few trophies up for my pair of oblits in my first vow, would the terminator trophy racks count for my terminators? My bits box is lacking in loyalist pieces, it's an exclusively heretical box. :)

Definitely some loyalist helms on spikes.  Instead of the chaos banners for my icons of vengeance, I gave a loyalist power sword to an Aspiring Champion and a defaced Imperial Fists banner to another.  Functional demoralizing trophies of war :D  You could also just make their armor a bit more ornate, give them some extra toys, more spikes, chains, mutations, etc.

It not uncommon for wars between the Legions & warbands. My Iron Warriors have trophies from loyal Chapter, Guards, Xenos & from fellow Legion - There Black Legion, Night Lord, Word Bearer, Death Guards, Thousand Sons & World Eaters.

You could also just give them the old Legion Numeral markings. E.g. Death Guard - XIV

I remember reading on this sight someone's trouble removing all of the Aquillas off of the land raider tracks. With a razor blade, a little luck, and a few minutes, I may have just solved two problems. The aquilla will be appropriately defiled, rest assured.

As well as the trophy idea as said above, you could also have a particular shoulder badge, like kill markings, or a unifying symbol for the squad. Or Heresy/Scouring era iconography, as this was when the Long War began.

The markings idea is a good one, but doesn't fit the background of my Warband. Which is a Black Legion faction that does not remember the Heresy and it's aftermath with any fondness. I often leave one shouldpad blank as a statement that they now belong to a legion without a number.

 

That and I have yet to attempt to apply transfers, and my freehand looks like it was done while heavily intoxicated :)

Could always deface/desecrate them - this would show their contempt to their past and keep in line with the bitter attitude of the Black Legion, especially your warband by the sound of things.

Yeah, being a "Veteran of the Long War" seems to be more of a state of mind than actually being experience. I mean, the Black Legion is known for accepting everyone, including recently fallen marines into their ranks, and for them the upgrade is mandatory.

 

I think it's more a question of "Are these guys fighting against the Imperium, or are they fighting for themselves?", not so much a matter of how long they have been going at it.

I always found it weird that the Imperials would literally drag their symbol through the mud with every rotation of the tread. IMHO that is much more fitting for traitors.

Less than 100 actually. Badab War ended in 913. M41 or so. Part of why I really like Huron as a villain (far prefer him to Abby), he gets done.

A I make the bases "taller" then the rest of the army. not scenic but as close as possible to it.

 

B I like the "clean" csm look for my army, for veterans I add green stuff mohowaks, bare arms , resculpted shoulder pads

 

C I try to have a "philosopher'/holy man in every squad. a dude holding and looking at a enemy helmet, dude cleaning his melee weapon with a cloth made out of pice of an enemy banner, sm dude[always with a bolter] having a chained [pick slave/mutant dog].

D the "merry" csm [no more then 1-2 per 1500 army] the drinking horn dude, the obligatory "my plasma explodes, so am scorched" dude

 

E heavy/special weapon dudes with "old" style weapons

 

F golem obliterators using khemir parts

Abby also gets :cuss done. It just might not be the :cuss that you expect. He could have realized that the victory of Chaos would also mean the end of Chaos as the Cabal predicted. So his goal is to keep the game going.

Sorry but I don't buy that. At all. While I'm not going down the '12 Failures' route, because it isn't correct (though neither is 'all 12 were excellent successes where everything worked out for the BL'), I would say the volume of done by Huron in 86 or so years compares very favourably with Abby's output over 10,000. While I understand the desire for GW and ADB to attempt to move past the 'Failbaddon' meme (amusing as it is), this kind of 'just as planned'/'he's pulling a fast one on the Gods themselves' stuff that's been circulating recently is imo even worse, going into full blown Mary Sue territory.

Quite frankly I think the 'Abby as Antichrist' idea is a poor one. Far more fitting of the tag line 'In The Grim Darkness Of The Far Future, There Is Only War' would be 'Abby as Sisyphus'. In this interpretation both Abby and the Imperium are trapped in this truly eternal struggle. Abby is stuck, consumed by spite towards his failure of a Father, unable to abandon the dream of proving himself Horus' better once and for all. Yet every time that boulder reaches the top of the hill, it rolls back, as the Imperium's might rallies or the inherent fractious nature of the Chaos armies undoes Abby's scheming. Leaving Abby, for all his protestations to the contrary, just as much a puppet as Horus was before him. And in the Warp, those thirsting Gods keep laughing.

I'd say it's far more fitting to the theme and tone of the setting this way. Neither side can escape the conflict, or retains the strength to ever truly prevail. There Is, and can only be, War.

I get what you're saying, but I think either you have to apply the Sysiphos comparison to the setting as a whole or you don't. On a grand scale no one can accomplish anything because the status quo has to be largely preserved. On a small scale however there can be victories and defeats. I prefer to look at it and to see small accomplishments and setbacks rather than look at it and say nothing ever changes. Sure the "empire" Huron carved out in a short time is impressive but on a galactic scale it is not that significant. On the other hand the 10.000 years Abbadon had, also only equate to a couple of hundred years in real space IIRC. During that time he did not occupy a contiguous area of the galaxy but achieved all sorts of goals for whatever purpose.
