Origins:

The forge fires of Gharant III have burned for untold centuries. It was rediscovered by the Imperium during the Great Crusade, but even at that point was already a hub of technological manufacture and innovation. It is postulated by Imperial historians that Gharant III's first inhabitants were brought to their home by one of the colony ships dispatched from Mars many millennia before. Unsurprisingly, the planet's rulers quickly found common ground with the newly formed Adeptus Mechanicus and were designated as one of the first Forgeworlds in the Segmentum Obscurus.

The Gharant System:

The Gharant system has six planetary bodies, two of them habitable.

The earliest tales of Gharant III claim that when it was settled by the Martian colonists it was a paradise world, filled with life and beautiful beyond words. In the time of the present Imperium it is a desolate waste, mined dry of every precious resource. Even the atmosphere - once perfectly breathable - is thin, stripped of most of its nitrogen, oxygen and other useful elements. Vast dust storms rage in the deserts between the great Forge-cities, often blotting out the pale light of Gharant's sun entirely.

The Adeptus Mechanicus of Gharant III dwell in seven vast, high-walled communties, where millions of Tech-Priests and labourers create and manufacture the equipment that supports human life on dozens of worlds across three Sub-sectors. Three of these seven Forge-cities are given over entirely to the production of weapons, armour and ammunitions, supplying the unending needs of the Emperor's great armies. A massive orbital network formed by the gradual expansion and joining of thousands of smaller space stations, a handful of which are believed to predate the Great Crusade, provides docks and shipyards for Mechanicus vessels and the Imperial Navy.

Gharant V is the other primary world of the system. An ocean planet, more than ninety-three percent of its surface is covered in water. The vast majority of its 17 billion inhabitants live a similar percentage of their lives beneath the waves. The population is housed in numerous Hives built on the ocean floor. Though these structures are several miles high, only the very tips break the surface. Gharant V has close ties with the third planet, its unending seas supplying the foodstuffs that provide the Forgeworld with the raw proteins and vitamins needed to sustain the biological parts of its workforce. In return, the Mechanicus gifts the ocean world with access to all manner of arcane technology.

The other worlds of the system are largely uninhabited, gas giants or airless rocks. However, the Forgeworld does maintain several research and testing facilities on or around these planets, hidden far from prying eyes.

Allies:

Legio Mallei Argentum: As Gharant's Titan Legion, the Silver Hammers have just as long and distinguished a history as their home planet. The Legio fought with pride during the Great Crusade and remained steadfast and loyal throughout the horrors of the Horus Heresy. In the millennia since, the Hammers have added time and again to their roll of honours, crushing heretics and xenos alike to the glory of the Omnissiah. The Legion is powerful, consisting of an impressive sixty-six engines. These include seven full maniples of Warlord-class Battle Titans, five Reavers, thirty-eight Warhound Scout Titans and a pair of ancient, monstrous Emperor-class Titans.

Marines Adamant: The fates of the Gharant system and the Marines Adamant Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes are inextricably linked. When the Forgeworld was almost overwhelmed during the trials and terrors visited on the Imperium by the rise of the hated Orks, the Archmagos petitioned the Fabricator General, in his position as High Lord, to order the creation of a new Chapter to protect the Havilar Sector. So eager was the Archmagos to have the force included in the next Founding that he promised to supply the new Chapter with all of the arms, armour and vehicles it would need and searched out an ideally situated world to base them on. When the fourth Founding was eventually declared, the Fabricator General was able to use his influence to see that the gene seed and training cadre for the new Chapter were taken from the Mechanicus' closest allies, the Iron Hands.

Although the Marines Adamant of the present are much different from their emotionless and logical forebears, the bonds that link them to Gharant III remain strong. While the Chapter is no more friendly with the forge than they are with anyone, there is respect and as much trust as is within their ability to give. Likewise, over the millennia the masters of Gharant III have developed a clear understanding of the nature of the Marines Adamant and are careful to take no actions that might undermine this mutually beneficial relationship.

House Malgor:The Knights of House Malgor have a long and proud association with the forges of Gharant III. Since the days of the Horus Heresy, brave warriors of the House have piloted their mighty war machines in the defence of the Havilar Sector. House Malgor was based on the Knight World of Basilax until the middle of the 37th Millenium. At that time, the expansion of several Ork empires brought the Knight World under attack, flooding it beneath a green tide. Most of the Knight Houses of Basilax were destroyed in the defence of their home but Malgor, who were at the time serving with elements of the Legio Mallei Argentum near the Cadian Gate, endured.

Now, joined by a handful of lone Knights from the other Houses who survived the death of Basilax, Malgor is based on Gharant III itself and is ably supported by the vast resources of its forges. Detachments of Knights commonly act as close support or in a flanking role for battle groups of the Silver Hammers, or occasionally as line breakers for Skitarii regiments or the Households of the Marines Adamant.
