Coloured metallics?

Recommended Posts

I have personally not tried it myself, but google Viva Metallica. It is a method that creates a metallic appearance by using a silver base coat and washes. I hear every not and again about companies that produce colored metallics, though I do not know any brands off the top of my head.

What particular color are you looking for?

There are a few possibilities:

First would be paint it with some sort of steel metal color and use washes or something like Tamiya Clear colors.

Second would be going to mix the color you want with Metal Medium from Vallejo, that would give the color the metalic shine.

Third would be looking out for some colored metalics.

Vallejo does a Gunmetal Blue.

But you can find a few in the Scalecolor Metal paint sets atm they are not selling their metallics seperated.

Coat D'Arms do the old Citadel coloured metallics I believe.

You can also shade and glaze white metals (silver, chaimail, etc.) with washes/inks or mix inks directly into white metals.

FWIW I find the best way to do it is to do a metallic silver base coat and then put a coat of ink on top. Works for every colour apart from red and is really nice and vibrant, far more so than mixing paints in my view. Here's a WIP Salamander showing how it 'pops'.

For whatever reason, if you do a red ink on a silver metallic base, you end up with pink. After some experimentation, I found that runelord brass works well as an alternative though; I did this Thousand Son that way.
