Scriptures of Slaughter - ETL update

Recommended Posts

Servants of Khorne stood from horizon to horizon, filling the air with their shrieks, gibbers and howls of blood.  Their battle banner strained in the coppery wind that blew across their ranks.  It was a banner of deepest, darkest red, with but a single rune and a legend of simple devotion: Blood for the Blood God.  At some secret signal all fell silent, and then came a single shriek of dark and bloody loyalty, a pact of hate and death.  It echoed from leathered skins, and grew to shake the clouds.  And far above the Daemon's ranks, there was an answering roar of bloody approval, torn from Khorne's brazen throat.

- The Tome of Blood

Welcome to the painting log for my Daemonkin and whatever other Khorne related stuff comes to mind.  I had previously toyed with Khorne armies in WHFB but never in 40k.  I knew I had to rectify that when the codex and new bloodthirster were released.  My interest in this army is mainly for the modeling and painting.  I rarely play these days and haven't attended a tournament in over a decade.  This plog is one of the ways I plan to keep myself motivated to finish the army and get feedback as I try new stuff.  However, no guarantees on frequency of update.

I haven't decided on an actual warband yet.  My preference is to avoid the ones presented in the codex and develop a DIY background at some point.  Time has been at a premium lately and developing a backstory for the little men is not high on my list of stuff to get done.  At least not while the ETL is underway!

While the details of the warband are loose, there are a few items I want to experiment with on this army from a painting aspect.  The first three goals are:

1) To successfully achieve a zenithal lighting effect.  This looks so easy to do with an airbrush but I paint by brush only so...we'll see how it goes.

2) Scenic bases...as the miniatures are finished!  I have always waited to do bases until everything is almost finished.  Frequently I never get to them or end up doing something simple just to be done.  No more!

3) Improve my highlighting and shading techniques.  The less I play the more I want to make a showcase army.

And as a plog without pictures is just a log...let's start things off with some pictures of my WIP ETL vow.

Herald

This guy is from the wrathmonger kit and is a test for painting reddish skin before I start on other Khorne daemons.  The skin probably needs a few more layers before I'll really feel happy with the effect.  My intent has been to work the red up to more of a dark flesh tone.  So far this has given the skin highlighting a slightly orange tint and mostly come out how I expected.  Not sure if I'll have to take steps to redden it once I'm done.  Armor is not as far along as the skin.  I'm debating between a bone color trim and a more traditional brass.  My plan is for the daemons to have blackish armor while any CSM will have metallic red armor.  I'm not sure the bone will look okay with the metallic red, although I think I prefer using bone with the black.  Originally I was going to keep the trim the same on both but maybe I shouldn't.

Lord:

A combination of the chaos champion clampack and a raptor.  A jump lord with dual lightning claws may not be the best build, but I like the visual.  However...progress is going slow on painting him - partially because of the details, partially because of how I am doing the armor. The base color is a metallic silver that was mostly shaded/highlighted. Right now I'm working on tinting it to get a (hopefully) deep red. The pic is just of the back and jump pack as those were the ones that showed the progress to date the best.

And that's all for now.  Thanks for looking!

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally finished my first ETL IV vow.  Well, perhaps more accurate to say that I've stopped fiddling with them for the moment and consider them ready to field.  There are a few touches that I'm going to hold off on until the entire army is done or until I have more time to practice.  (Blood effects - I'm looking at you!)

Pretty happy with how these turned out other than the spawn.  I learned a few things on techniques and (at the end) found a couple of ways I could have sped the entire process up.  I struggled on the spawn partly because of the palette choice, partly as I'm missing something in trying to bring up the highlights.  This is the third go at him though and at this point I think it's best to revisit later.  As for tracking on my goals:

 - Zenithal highlighting is better than my first attempts but still not were I'm happy.  Conceptually I understand it but it is such a different way of thinking than the way I've painted in the past.  I read that taking a black and white photo can help.  Might try that next time.

 - Bases are in place at a table top quality for the first time in....16 years?

 - Highlighting and shading is a notch improved over what I've done the last few years.

And note to self: I need a better camera and a light box at some point.

Thanks!  Now the trick will be to get the color mostly consistent as the army expands.

Here's how I did the metallic red:

1) Prime black

2) Layer up to a bright silver metallic.  I don't use GW paints for this part but the closest colors would be Leadbelcher base with Runefang Steel (+ a dab of white) highlights.  The darkest areas are closer to a metallic black.  I used 6-7 layers to build the gradient on the lord, using matte medium and slo-dry to thin the paint and help with blending.  The ratio is ~ 3:2:1 medium:slo-dry:paint as best I can eyeball it.

3) Wash once with Nuln Oil to smooth the shadowing/highlights

4) Wash twice Carroburg Crimson (or once depending on how heavily it gets applied)

5) Wash once with Seraphim Sepia to add warmth to the tone and bring the color closer to red

6) Wash once with Carroburg Crimson

7) Glaze once with Bloodletter

With the washes I start in the lower areas of each section that will be more shadowed and pull the color up to the brightest points.  This helps to keep the highlights from getting washed out.  I let each layer dry before applying the next.  I'll try to remember to take pictures of each stage the next time I paint to help illustrate the changes in color.

It has been a slow start on my ETL vow 2.  The priming and assembly of the Lord of Skulls and a unit of blood letters is underway.  Mold line removal has been cause of much of the slowness although a good part of it also me trying to decide how much of the LoS to assemble before starting painting.  So instead...time to get going on the bases for the blood letters!

  • 1 month later...

The final week of the ETL seems like a good reason to start updating this again!  Getting ready to do the bulk of the work on the Lord of Skulls.  All in all this has been a cursed model to work with.  I love the miniature but have had a horrid time - from almost gluing my fingers to stuff 6 times (haven't come close to doing this once in the last 20 years), almost puncturing my finger while drilling out the tiny barrels on the juggernaut heads (blood for the blood god), dropping it and having to re-glue parts (!!!),  to an involved "discussion" where someone lectured me on why it was stupid to buy it given it sucks in the game (sigh - but I like to paint).

I'm a big further along than what is shown in this picture.  This one shows where I'm about half done with the layering of silver before starting the red tinting.  It doesn't show well in the picture but there are ~4 layers of color on the skulls as I've started working that up to white.  So...many....skulls.  Doing everything by brush has been an experience as this is the largest mini I have attempted to paint.  An airbrush and spray primer is starting to sound really good after this.
