Am I missing something?

If I upgrade them with power axes, even with shield wall buff, aren't I still hitting at I 1?

Nope, you're not. Its the main reason why the unit is "OK" and not "amazing". Its mostly there to buff any IC you might have attached to the Squad, kinda like Polux who can swing his Power Fist at Initiative.

There is another way.

Everyone seems to forget one option - breacher charge.

Its too wonky for what it Does, imo. I don't really like it...

 

If only we could take power sword...LIKE THE ULTRAMARINES UGHHHH

I am tracking that any warder not equipped with an axe is hitting +1I when they are charged but axes are still I1

I mean, yeah Warders Hitting in CC without a Power Axe Benefit but its literally them punching the unit that just charged them. Sure, its still S4 but the fact that they dont have a Bolter, BP and CCW irks me a lot, especially since you need to ditch the Bolter for the Power Axe and pay a hefty sum for it even if its the only squad-wide weapon option available.

 

Also, doesnt help that they only have 1A base (Sarge has 2) for a unit that very much feels like a CC Breacher Unit (or at least a rather Confused Identity, imo) and, without a CCW + BP, they'll only ever be at 1A unless you give them a Power Axe...which you trade the Bolter for..and thus squander the +1Initiative Rule.

He was saying that OP wasn't missing anything, and that the Axes at I1 despite +1 I is correct.  However, the +1 I can apply to characters who join the squad, so a Praetor with a Paragon blade (or similar) can get an initiative boost from them.
