Need some pointers

Recommended Posts

I've been staring at my skitarii codex for the past couple hours now, yet I am still stumped on what to take. As a beginner I have a few questions as to tactics and competitive builds.

Are formations a "must have" for an cult/skitarii army?

I personally love the sicarians in the skitarii book. Is the sicarian killclade worth it? If so what would you use to support it?

How do you find the proper balance between cult and skitarii? I would love to run both but I can't seem to find a balance I'm happy with.

Any advice/war stories of experiences would be much obliged

Howdy. Most folks like it when your army is bound. It makes your list seem more friend, and this basicly means your army is made completely of formation and detachments. You dont have to take them and some army can make great list with out them, but doing so might make your list seem unfriend even if it isn't ^.^.

cult/skitarii is all about competitive you want your list to be. Vanguards are amazing and kastelans are very powerful. So if you want a cheesy agressive and opressive list just take however many of either of those units, and your opponent wont like you.

The Sicarian infilitrators are a unit i'd call balance. It's really good, but its about as useful as you are at using them correctly. If your new and you suck at unit palcement and picking targets your going to be very unimpressed. If your very skilled or learn quickly they will be your armies scalpel. Ruststalkers are kinda meh. Have a look through the admech forums. We have a thread for almost every unit in cult and skits.

I'm pretty new to 40k but played fantasy competitively year ago. So as some oen new to the 40k scene these are the things i've learned from these forums and my local shops.

SELECTED: DENTRICA I OF C

ENGAGE NEURAL CONGRESS – WIRELESS AUTOSHUNT ACQUIRED

UPLOADING… + TACTICA - HARD DATA +

Here are a few early and recent pointers that began here during the 'Great Cog Rush of 2015'...

Starting Out: Rangers, Vanguard

Starting Out 2: Dragoons & Ironstriders

Starting Out 3: Sicarian Infiltrators and Ruststalkers

Starting Out 4: Onager Dunecrawlers

Skitarii & Mechanicum: Hard Data Review

There are many useful pieces of data. There are more tactica threads as well, but these have been helpful to me as I build my own Mechanicus force.

The Skitarii Battle Maniple Formation is not a bad place to start...

Most certainly. How can you NOT want to build one unit of everything?

- 1 Troop unit of Skitarii Vanguard

- 1 Troop unit of Skitarii Rangers

- 1 Elite unit of Sicarian Ruststalkers

- 1 Elite unit of Sicarian Infiltrators

- 1 Fast Attack unit of Sydonian Dragoons

or 1 Heavy Support unit of Ironstrider Ballistarii

- 1 Heavy Support unit of Onager Dunecrawlers

Besides, you will need it if you want to work your way up to the 'War Convocation' Formation. That one combines units from C:Skitarii, C: Cult Mechanicus, and C:Imperial Knights.

I'd say no, but they're a nice bonus. Some are kind of bad, some are good, but it really depends on whether you're willing to pick up the models to meet the requirements. I'd call them useful but not necessary.

-I personally love the sicarians in the skitarii book. Is the sicarian killclade worth it? If so what would you use to support it?

The buffs for the Killclade are excellent: you get doubled range on the Infiltrator's amazing debuff aura, and you can charge after Running with your Ruststalkers. The downside is that Ruststalkers are very difficult to use in general (as mmimzie said) and there's a lot of points required to get those buffs. Overall, it's a tough formation to use and not recommended for your first attempt.

-How do you find the proper balance between cult and skitarii? I would love to run both but I can't seem to find a balance I'm happy with.

You need to consider the specific strengths and weaknesses of each army (which is honestly the case for nearly any 40k army). For Skitarii, their strengths are excellent firepower with high accuracy and good mobility; weaknesses include fragility and role-centric units. Cult Mechanicus has durable units with high firepower, countered by high points costs and poor mobility. For the most part, you'll want to focus on taking the quick, hard-hitting Skitarii units and working those alongside the better "brick" units Cult Mechanicus can bring. Stand-out examples include Skitarii Vanguard and Onager Dunecrawlers working alongside Kataphrons and Kastelan Robot Maniples.

That said, I'd focus on getting the models you like first! If you don't enjoy the army you're building, you won't want to progress, so make sure you're collecting what you like. smile.png

Thank you all very much. I have been looking at the battle maniple, also the cohort cybernetica (but who hasn't). I've never been one to play overly competitive lists. Chaos space marines (mono nurgle specifically) has been my main army for the past three-four years. I'm just now getting more into the tournament scene. What I can't really settle on is if I'd like to run an army that would dominate mid field and be able to rapidly react to threats that got too close. With this I'd probably build my list around cohort cybernetica. Parking them center field and activating the double shot doctrina. Not sure how i want to support them yet, most likely a couple units of vanguard with arc rifles, throw in a couple dragoons for good measure to clear my kastelans from getting bogged down by hordes. My other thought (probably much less competitive) is to establish a fire base of dune walkers supported by Rangers and kataphrons. I'm obviously still very up in the air about all of this.

Try out both Sicarian variants when playing the Battle Maniple and see if you like them at all.

What he said + maybe proxy the sicarians first with some 40mm bases then decide...it's a decent hit of money to make a squad of ruststalkers and then decide its not your cup of tea...

My 2c is that im going infiltraitors with taser goad and flechette...a much more universal but still lethal unit msn-wink.gif

As to the whole army composition...yeah, that's a Big Boat we're All in my friend laugh.png

and what Vel'Cona said too...get the stuff you really love the look of...most people that love a model always find a way to make it work for them tongue.png

Cheers, Mithril
