Bullgryn Conversions

Hello!

I am working on an Inquisitorial warband and have included a squad of Bullgryns as part of the Inquisitors personal bodyguard.  I knew the squad would end up being heavily kitbashed, so I decided to start with some fantasy models for some variety.   The conversion and fitting for the bullgryn armor was a little more involved than  I had expected, but with a little sanding and cutting I ended up with some nice fitting armor.

Soo much greenstuff ahead of me.

Power maul armed Bullgryns.  Each of these will have extra body armor and large purity seals liberally applied to reflect their position as shock troops of the Inquisition.

Slab shield squad members.  Purity seals, and plenty of grenades, pouches and personal effects for each Bullgryn

Finally the leader of the squad.  Wielding a dreadnoughts power claw as a power fist, I have considerable armor and green stuff modification ahead of me for this brute.  Overall, I want him to be physically larger than all the rest and to stand out clearly in the group.  I am even considering a Commisar type hat for him to wear as a sign of his devotion and importance to the Inquisitional warband.

This is the last allied force for my Inquisitorial warband, so I am stoked to complete these brutes.  I pledged the warband as my ETL vow and am my only regret is that these fine beasts cannot count for my challenge vows.

Thanks!

The fantasy Ogres are slightly shorter and fatter, but the amount of sculpting required to fit them into the Bullgryn armor trims away all the belly fat.  The addition of the armor covers up the slightly different sculpt and makes the models all look pretty much the same height.  Look at the images.  All the models with grey legs are true Bullgryn models.  All the rest are fantasy Ogres.

Tonight I made good progress towards finishing the modeling for my Bullgryns.  The Sergeant is looking pretty complete and I might be ready to prime shortly.  The process to create him was very spontaneous and I think I shall have to put together some good fluff for him.  Dreadnought power arm and a ripper gun makes for a beastly combo.  He also has an old curved sword from the fantasy Ogre kit.  I had to remove the hand that was holding the sword, but that worked out nicely.

The rank and file slabshield horde are all kitted with a ton of grenade shells and pouches.  The grenade launchers are terrible and it is taking a bunch of effort to close the obvious gaps between the sides of the grenade launcher tube.  I am thinking of making some funny bits to add like food on a hook from the fantasy Ogre banners.

The power maul Bullgryns got more armor and a ton of grenades.  Again, adding some funny food related bits might give the boys some much needed Ogreishness.

Lastly, I blue tacked the slabshields into place to see what the Brute squad would look like.

Bullgryn Bonehead Sergeant Bob Jones  picked up another round and chambered it into the over sized "ripper" gun he had owned for so many years.  The purity seal hanging on the end of it dragged across the ground as he lifted the magazine and chambered another round.  His arm was hopelessly stuck now.  Crazy Orks tried to run him over with their truck.  Now he was pinned between the wrecked Ork wartruck and a rather burned looking rock.  two small Gretchin still scampered around on his back poking him painlessly with their little daggers.  All the Orks had already died by his rather furious, still perfectly useful right hand.  The real concern was the big one walking over towards him waving its hands in the air and making the most unpleasant faces.  Sgt Jones raised his gun and felt the Ork boot intercept his aim.  No way around it, time to either end up Ork chow, or surgically remove the arm.  One round from the "ripper" gun discharged point blank.  The pain was pretty bad.  Ork looked scared for a moment too as it spun to get away.  Them shells is big and make a lovely flash.  But now the Ork looks scared.  Sgt Jones is big, even for Ogryn standards.  And angry.

That evening the local mechanicus servitors arrive in the Ogryns commmon area with a surprise.  A Dreadnought system was viciously ruined during the battle, but one of the arms was still largely intact.  With a little inspiration, the Mechanicus Priest claims that Sgt Jones will have a new arm.  Praise to the Emperor!

Very cool work. The conversions are great and the painted one looks spot on.

The more I see what people are able to come up with, the more my resolve in not buying some Ogryns is wavering...

Assigned to Inquisitor Valeria Mane for permanent placement, these Bullgryn warriors are a living wall of armor and strength that adds a much needed ability to aid the good Inquisitor on her mission across the stars.

Addition of grenades, personal items and pouches adds some individuality to each member of the Mauler squad.  Weathering effects done with sponge on armor and then with stipling for rust effects on armor afterwards.

Addition of food items, water cans, extra grenade shells and assorted items helps give the models the "Ogreishness" that is needed to help each member look slightly individual.

The full Brute squat providing cover for Inquisitor Mane and her Relic Land Raiders and Ministorium Priestesses.

Liberal application of oversized purity seals gives a sense of size to the models and adds some Ordo Hereticus flair to the models.  Basing across all models shares the idea of a dark, muddy area with snow patches on the ground and small dark shrubs growing sporadically.

Each Bullgryn has an Inquisitorial tattoo on his left temple area.  Mauler squad are also entitled to a tattoo on the right side of their skull showing their loyalty to the Inquisition.  You have to look closely, but you can make them out on several models even on these pics.  I might go back and add close up shots later, but I forgot about them while I was doing this main photo shoot.

I would like to admit that the fitting of armor onto the Fantasy Ogres was not as simple as I had first hoped.  It took extensive cutting and sanding, but the armor does cover the damaged areas nicely.  The purchase of extra heads, shields and armor online was a great way to make the models look uniform.  These guys were great fun to paint and have kept me motivated to continue painting on my next challenge.  Carcharodon Astra scouts and Librarians for the Back to Badab challenges in the WIP section.

I snapped a few closer images of the boys while messing around tonight.

Here is a Fantasy Ogre that I converted to a Bullgryn

Here is one of the actual Bullgryn models I managed to get.  As a member of the esteemed power maul assault group, he wears a personalized set of carpace armor.

Here is a shot of all the slabshield boys with their Inquisition tattoos visible.  All Bullgryns except Sgt Jones wears an Inquisitorial mark.

Sgt. Jones gave his arm.  He needs no little tattoo.

Each member of the assault Power Maul squad wears a personalized tattoo on his right temple to show his dedication to the safety of Inquisitor Mane.

I always dread extreme close up shots since it shows all the spots I missed.  They all look perfect to me than when I put them on the computer I see ink stains and sloppy paint brush strokes.  I did find that working with the Bullgryns gave me a much larger model and painting faces and items seemed easier than on my smaller troops.  These were a great practice for me to move onto smaller figurines.
