Memento Mortis - Rise from the dust

Hey guys. smile.png

Truth is, I'm really not great at doing this hobby... quickly. There are a lot of unfinished models sat around, some in boxes even. So these guys, my customer Memento Mortis Chapter, successor to Iron Hands, really do rise from the dust. I'm hoping getting more involved with the forum will speed me up a bit.

So far I have painted, from my 1,500pt army:

  • Techmarine x2
  • 5 man tac squad
  • Dread
  • Razorback
  • Whirlwind
    • Chapter master (not technically part of the army

Now I'll get some good photos up of those in a short while but in this first post here is my new addition: 10 man tac squad and their Drop pod.

I admit I only really manage a passable table standard, and i do struggle with transfers, and paint consistency (especially white?) due to long breaks in-between sessions of painting, so please any feedback you guys think will help me improve I welcome.

Not entirely sure how I feel on the color scheme. Guessing I'll learn more based on your fluff. LOVE the crisp colors, and the subdued blue-black tone makes them ACE in my book. Gives em a dirty look without the grit and grime.

 

Do link us when you've got your fluff and chapter stuff up and posted. I'm sure it'll be a decent read.

The colour scheme changed quite a lot from my test mini. I always wanted it to be Turquoise, because it isn't that popular for my experience, and I really like the colour generally. Eventually it got darker and darker, to near-black, similar to early Dark Angels stuff where there green is near-black. I also came from painting a few Crimson Fists prior to this as test models so they rubbed off on me a little?

The grey just came from a bit of an interest in Heraldic colour rules (as part of the hobby only! haha) where it teaches that for the most part you shouldn't match metallic and non-metallic colours on the same surface - which is why Yellow and grey looks bad (imo). So I went with grey because I knew there was going to be a lot of red spot-colour in the army.

Side note: I do my Mechanics symbols half and half as opposed to opposites. I made the mistake once (read: 3 or 4 times) and just went with it as a quirk rather than re-painting them all. sad.png

Nice color scheme, and I particularly like your techmarines (esp. the standard one and how the little white band on his helmet changed the look entirely) and plasma guy. I think your master's hammer could have the head angled just a little to give him some more movement, though.

Nice! Is that thunderhawk blue or sotek green? I guess its highlighted with sybarite green, or just mix white or grey into the base colour?

A keen eye you have! It's a base of black followed by Stegadon Scale Green for the main colour, then heavily dry brushed from above using - as you say - Thunderhawk blue. A wash of 'Nightshade brings back some contrast; however, any patching-up work is done with Stegadon again and is usually a near flawless match without having to do all three steps again, you just lose the texture a bit. sleep.png

The highlight is Temple Guard blue straight from the pot, with extra sharp highlights (rarely on infantry, mostly vehicles) using the Skink Blue dry paint.

Thank you. I hadn't even realised they were discontinued until you said! Well they were the only ones I was going to buy for any future projects so now I really don't know anything I'm interested in from Forgeworld sad.png

My update is for the scouts I promised a while ago. I managed to get through these guys quicker than if I hadn't been on these forums I think so thank you guys in a passive unknowingly kind of way.

Like most I'm not keen on the scout faces but otherwise I love the sniper scout models, I think they're good fun and the only real excuse for a space marine army to show some somewhat modern military influences. They're in my Combined Arms army to *hopefully* force saves on Daemons and enemy Elites without drawing my lascannon fire. Let's see how that plays out next time I have a game.

The camo isn't the best example perhaps, but I didn't feel like given the bases' chosen scheme a "tight" pattern would look effective.

You're too harsh on yourself. This is a great 'combat' scheme, very gritty and feels 'real', it doesn't look garish or unrealistic (considering the universe we're talking about). Great crisp painting, and your Warlord is awesome. I especially like your converted Techmarine, I always prefer kitbashes to stock models (although the Techmarine from the box is great too :) ).

 

The only possible thing I could think of to increase my own subjective enjoyment of these minis is to really go to town on the weathering - slap on more dust, dirt, mud and battle damage. The former could be weathering powders brushed into recesses and the latter could just be sponge work. However, you seem to be a 'clean and crisp' style painter so this may not be your aesthetic 'thing' in which case no worries, they look great as they are.

Hi guys. 

 

Just taken a long time to get this Dreadnought done due to illness. I'm much happier with him than the previous Dread, I think I like the battle damage on him, making him look like he's survived a battle through the sturdiness of his form, where as the previous dread looks like he might have just been woken up from the chapters darkest corners!

 

Only regret is that in the left leg "alcove" some of the matte varnish has pooled and gone a tiny bit milky. That might require carving out and re-doing when it has dried properly.

The dread looks great, the battle damage looks good and manages to remain subtle and not ott. I really like your scheme too, one of the better 'homebrew' ones I've seen. The sternguard squad and the second techmarine with the servo arm rather than the harness are particularly good. For a first time attempt at OSL I'd have to say from the photo's you nailed it!
