Old vs new Assault Marines

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone who owns both kits could post a photo comparing the two.

The new Assault Marines look somewhat squat, but I'm not sure if they are actually shorter or if the legs are just thicker.

Also, does anyone know if the new boxes actually come with just Ultramarine decals?

Cheers.

They're not shorter or thicker. The proportions are basically the same as every other plastic power armour kit.

The casting is a lot sharper, and the poses have changed, that's all.

They're leaning into the run more and the positioning is more natural than the old, bow-legged "running while perfectly vertical/dancing on the spot" legs, which might be giving you the impression that they're shorter from the front view. Try spinning the 360 on the GW product page round to the side.

They're supplied with an Ultramarines Infantry Transfer Sheet, which has:

• 10x Codex-standard Tactical badge

• 5x Codex-standard Assault/Devastator/Command/Veteran badges

• 10x the Roman numerals 1-10

• 22x Ultramarines Chapter badges of various sizes.

They're much better quality than the old transfers - thinner, and no excess material around the actual icon.

The new assault marines box is much better than the old.

  • There are much more special weapons. Including 2 flamers and 3 plasma pistols. The new Eviscerator, grav pistol etc.
  • It is good if you are making assault marines on foot as you get two sets of 5 torsos, with and without jump pack straps.
  • You get scenic/rubble pieces for them to leap off of, one for each marine.
  • The price is about the same as before.

This. This is all you need to know. You can find the same effect on the new vs. old Tactical kit. Just compare an old helmet with a new one.

Old assault marine box is no longer worth buying unless you find it in a bargain bin, due to uncrisp details caused by the aging mold, and less options.

Not got the new kit but those old assault marines had a good run and I won't miss removing the mold lines from them. That said, how difficult are mold lines to remove from the new kit? The legs specifically look like they'll be tricky.

Also does anyone know how compatible the new assault squad is with the Black Templars upgrade sprue robed torso's?

Going off experiences of other new marine kits, and not specifically the assault one: not very hard at all. The problem isn't going to be particularly fierce to begin with when we compare to older kits which were all a decade old or more. The legs in the assault kit also come in two pieces so I really don't see this being particularly challanging.

Pretty sure the torsos are 'uncompatible' in the sense that they reversed which side of the torso had holes and which had studs for fitting them together, ie you're gonna get 2 studded pieces. Not hard to fix at all.

Another thing to bear in mind (Which was true in the past as well) is that the Templar tabards may not always lend themselves very well to leg poses of assault marines, they were mostly designed with model legs standing apart, but this may not be an issue.

The legs are all two components, so cleaning them up is easy. Not that they have much in the way of mouldlines anyway.

The Black Templar tabards don't really fit, you'd have to turn them at the waist quite severely to avoid the raised knee, and they'd look a bit stupid even if they did - sprinting without disturbing the flow of the tabard doesn't make much sense.
