Fluffy yet competitive Iron Hands 3k - Whaddaya Reckon?

Ok, so now I have a slightly better grip on 30k and how it works (at least, better than before...) what do we think to this, as a fluffy yet competitive force?

+++ Iron Hands - 3k (2995pts) +++

++ Legiones Astartes: Crusade Army List (Age of Darkness) (2995pts) ++

+ HQ (175pts) +

Legion Centurion [Power Armour] [Master of Signal]

Sicaran Venator Tank Destroyer [blessed Autosimulacra]

+ Lord of War (455pts) +

Ferrus Manus [Primarch]

Rite of War: Head of the Gorgon

BATTLE PLAN

Orth into Predator, providing Tank Hunters to the unit and BS5 to his tank, unit to outflank.

Ferrus, with Gorgon Terminators in Spartan. Moves up the board with Contemptor, and 2 Mechanised Tactical Squads with supporting fire from Venator and Deredeo.

18 man tactical squad joined by Master of Signal and Apothecary, unit to deploy inside Storm Eagle, mission: take and hold objectives.

All thoughts and opinions welcome - I've not tested this list yet, and I've still only played a single game of 30k so I'm genuinely not sure if there are any major pitfalls that I've missed here? smile.png

Thanks folks!

OK Looks good not a fan of the Deredeo as Contempter-mortes do the same job for cheaper. on point cost as your running the Head of the Gorgon RoW you get Blessed Autosimulacra for free witch I think i just free you up 90 points lol Battle Scribe seem not too take that in to count.

It never crossed my mind to check whether Tank Hunters spread from Orth to a unit he was a part of. Assuming you're right, that's really great and may influence how I go forward with some lists; Predator squadrons... Land Raider squadrons too :D.

Had you considered some of the non-compulsory Troops choices such as Tactical Support Squads?

Thanks for the feedback Trydragon! I had considered the Mortis, but the Deredeo provides rerolls to armour pen with its main guns, plus split fire with its rocket launchers and skyfire/interceptor when chosen. I figured it was worth the additional points, but thanks for the opinion :D Absolutely right on the HotG RoW, I specifically left Autosimulacra off the list and added it by hand after exporting from Battle Scribe ;)

Well, I think we are good for that because Orth's entry says "While Castrmen Orth is inside a vehicle, it uses his Ballistic Skill of 5 and benefits from the Tank Hunters special rule for all of its attacks."

Tank Hunters special rule states: "A unit that contains at least one model with this special rule re-rolls failed armour penetration rolls against vehicles."

I had given some consideration to a nice support unit of special weapons, but truth be told I just ran out of points :P I'm particularly excited by the Stormbird and the Predator squadron for some reason :P really feeling the 30k vibe right now, just need more practice games!

Thanks for the input both, any and all discussion very welcome. Especially if someone sees a glaring weakness in the list! Wouldnt want to build and paint 3k only to find that Ive made some school boy errors in unit choices!!

I'm not a fan of using flyers as transports. It takes a unit out of half the game then there is the fact there is no guarantee when they will come on for me, leaves too much to chance. Coupled with that the fact that a storm eagle then has to drop into hover to drop them offleaves it vulnerable. I feel a spartan is what you need and don't see the reason not to take one over a storm eagle if it's for objective grabbing and holding. Park 20 marines and a spartan on any objective and your open to is going to have a tough job on their hands.

Mainly though, I'm hard for Spartans so there is some bias.....

Do it. Buy them. If it all goes wrong you can always buy more marines XD.

Haha, very true sir! Very true! :P

I see your logic, but I started considering the fact that this blob squad are for holding objectives rather than being particularly offensive element in the force. That way the less time they spend on the board the better (in theory). Don't reserves automatically come on turn 4 any more? Generally my tactic would be to place a reserve in a relatively safe area / well covered area a good distance from the main battles expected choke points, and drop that unit in. Yes, hover makes the Storm Eagle vulnerable for a turn sure - but could be exciting!

I like Spartans as well, they are rock hard! That said, I already have 3 Heavy Support choices in my list and don't really fancy dropping any for a Spartan, plus I'd have to find another 100pts to run one basic.

Cheers for the input tho! :D

I see what you are saying but that's a unit of nearly 500 points you want to keep "out of the way". It seems a very big point sinck in something that might do its job or might not and is not part of the game. I think you could achieve the same effect with a cheaper unit of outflanking veterans in a rhino or something. Plus with all those intercept contemptor running about, flyers are especially vulnerable.

I like the idea, but I fear in practice it won't work well. That's just my 2 cents totally based on theory so not worth a lot anyway ;-)

Definetly a fair concern! And yes, its a huge point investment to pour into controlling one objective. I'll play test it a few times and see what occurs! I think I just got a little over excited of the idea of a combat drop, seemed quite cinematic :P we shall see how it holds up in practice!

What did you think to the rest of the list, all ok as far as you can see? :)
