Thomas_Gardiner Posted July 1, 2015 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Hey folks! Just wondering if anyone's noticed something about the new Codex that's been bothering me... Is it just me or is it really, *really* light on fluff compared to the last one? This book barely seems to mention the Lion and doesn't feature anything about his upbringing on Caliban, his friendship with Luther, the cleansing of the forests, the Great Crusade, Horus Heresy and the Great Scouring. Additionally, you don't get little stuff like the little fluff box about the Heavenfall Blades, there's much less fluff about the Deathwing, the "timeline" section is tiny... I could go on. Is anyone else feeling like we've been short-changed on fluff or is it just me? I kinda feel like a lot of the cool fluff parts from the last book have been replaced by crappy artwork and a billion pictures of miniatures Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You are absolutely right though. Really sucks for newer players just coming into Dark Angels by way of the starter box. I am glad they left in the bit about the Lion chilling in a chamber on The Rock. To be honest I'm a little surprised that they didn't toss in some kind of blurb like, "Want to know more? Buy these Black Library novels!" Yeah, that's what got me too! It takes out all the fluff for pictures of minis, annoying but I can deal with it. But there's not really any pointers on where new players can go to learn more. Like, if it had a list of books at the back or had a little advert for Angels of Darkness in the Interrogator Chaplain entry, I honestly wouldn't have bothered by that, and at least new kids can go somewhere to learn more. Glad I hold on to old books so I can keep re-reading the awesome fluff in the 6th ed book EDIT: Thinking about it, how are new folk ever meant to get a handle on the "feel" for the Chapter with so little context? Instead of stuff about the Lion and his strategic genius and stubbornness, we get a full page on what a Tactical squad is and what it does. It'd be a bit of a turn-off since all you really get is "they're like Space Marines but with secrets!" The whole reason I played DA in the first place was the awesome, grimdark fluff and I hate the idea of new brethren being turned off by its exclusion now :( Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was suprised to see the Company Masters all named though. That's never been done before to my knowledge. I really dislike the "Dark Angels are mysterious" angle GW takes so often. dalleron Posted July 2, 2015 Share Posted July 2, 2015 I wouldn't mourn the loss of fluff for Dark Angels. I've got 2 codex, and then, they recycled a fair chunk. You can find alot of it on the internet I imagine. Gav named some of the Company masters in the latest book, so I guess naming the rest wasn't much of stretch. Now, one could argue that his latest novels are not set in M41.999, but they have to be at some point between M41.997 and 999, since Belial was Master of Third Company until at least M41.997. I first noticed this when going through the 7E Necron codex for the first time; chunks of background for the characters was missing (I was gutted about Trollzyn particularly as his collection is/was very interesting) and pretty much every codex since then has been mullered right in the fluff. I'm not as au fait with the Black Library stuff as I should be, but the Legacy of Caliban series is good. Unremembered Empire has very good bits about DA and Lion. If you are interested in reading for the sake of reading about DA, you could reading Purging of Kadilus and the rest of Gav Thrope DA novels (Ravenwing,Master of Sanctity, The Unforgiven) Heresy has a DA novels Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
