++Chaos Project Log Showcase - rednekkboss++

I've been thinking lately about Project Logs and the role they serve in the community, which is basically an extended 'look at the cool things I built and/or painted!', at least on the surface. Thing is, they're so much more than that, or at least they can be. In addition to the obvious inspiration, it's an opportunity to ask people exactly how they did something, homebrew some fluff, hell, I've even seen homebrewed rules in some.

Now, I read project logs for fun. If you've got a Chaos log, I've probably read it from beginning to end. However, I get the feeling many among us have never really thought about how looking at other peoples stuff can improve their own hobby, so I figured I'd bring the whole thing into a bit more focus. I also appreciate that it's really easy to slip into habitual browsing and never go into any subforum other than this one!

I'm looking at doing this roughly once a week, and since we're in the Chaos forum, I'll only be showcasing Chaos plogs. If you have a Project Log and for some reason you *don't* want it showcased, just PM me. If you haven't started a Project Log, I highly recommend it. It's an easy way to get feedback, and I've found that having one place where all my pics are makes life easier when I need to show a picture of my work to someone.

So, without further ado, let me introduce the first Project Log Showcase, none other than KrautScientist's Khornes Eternal Hunt! As I type this, it sits at the auspicious amount of 64 pages, featuring a glorious mix of painting, kitbashing and converting almost entirely dedicated to the Blood God, with the occasional dip into a different god.

Here are some pictures of what to expect:

An early army shot:

I strongly urge you to read the whole thing, especially if you're the type of modeller that obsesses over the pose of every guy in your army. There are some amazing discussions in there about the exact pose of a hand or a weapon to get the desired result.

Thankyou for your time, and if you like KrautScientists stuff, don't forget to leave a comment in his plog!

Great idea - so good to spotlight these, and it's so nice to see "highlights" so to speak!

I love the conversion work - everything is so well matched and executed. Artistry!

So, another week, another Project Log. This week, a true master of his craft, who's dark works keep us supplied with materiel to fight the Long War, it is my pleasure to introduce Subtle Discord's Legion Rising!

Starting just as a place for Subtle to collect his thoughts and show off his Black Legion army, it quickly became a litany of exactly how to work with plasticard to a level of detail that frankly boggles the mind.

Black Legion Squad:

Rhino with hand-cut trim:

Havoc Launcer and Predator Trim:

Predator Trim Plans:

Fully painted stuff:

Conversion beamer mockup:

As you can see, the creativity and skill is quite frankly stunning. I'd also recommend this Project Log not just for the pretty pictures, but for the detail Subtle goes into with his explanations of how he does things. I found it a real insight into an area of modelling I've only dabbled in.

Thankyou for reading, and as always, leave a comment in Subtle Discords plog if you like his stuff!

Now for something slightly different. What happens when a warband gets cut off from everything that resembles a supply line? You get Eldrick Shadowblade's Oath Broken, that's what!

Sometimes, a project log comes along that makes you think 'Just how deep is your bits box?', and this is one of them. Seriously, check these kitbashes out:

Marines:

Champion:

Cadorach Bonecaster:

I have no idea where some of this stuff is from, but it conveys the scavenging the Oath Broken have to do incredibly well. Also, I'm pretty sure this is the only plog on the forum looking at the Oath Broken, so kudos to Eldrick for taking a chunk of fluff and running with it!

Unlike the previous mammoth plogs I've showcased, this clocks in at four pages, so is easily readable in a lunchtime.

Thanks for looking, and remember, if you do check out a plog I've showcased, leave the author some kind of feedback. It gets disheartening sometimes seeing the view counter tick up but nobody saying anything.

This is a really great topic Dragonlover.  There a lot of really brillaint armies out there & seen them always offer a lot of great idea/inspired to add on to our own armies or to try out somthing out.  Same with ETL & Call of Chaos, for me this is my favrout part of the hobby - seen cool armies.

This week, we swap our power armour for the esoteria of the Dark Mechanicus, with Red Skullz From the Fallen Forge. Now the Dark Mech have been dabbled with here and there by a few folk, but this is the first Dark Mech project I've seen using the new codexes. Obviously, we still have no actual models, and thus the hobby tools come out...

Army shot:

I should point out that there's two versions of this project log, one in the AD Mech forum and one in the WIP forum. I'm pretty sure they're the same all the way through though. It's a nice compact seven pages, and there's some awesome conversion work that I haven't even shown here, such as the Knight Morbitos.

As ever, thanks for looking!

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for the delay this week folks, I had a massive game on Friday and work yesterday. So, no more dilly-dallying, on to this weeks showcase: the Night Lords 47th Company of Augustus B'Raas!

Sorcerer on Jetbike, because why not:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Dragonlover63/ProjectLogShowcase/temporary_zpsae8918fe.jpg

Truescale Xarl of ADB's Night Lords novels:

Painted Xarl:

(The rest of First Claw also got made.)

The start of a Khornate diversion:

Yes, that's a Lord of Skulls with eight legs.

Some Berzerkers:

Night Lord Obliterators:

Nurgle Bikes:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Dragonlover63/ProjectLogShowcase/2015-05-232021.34.18_zps4wkslcyw.jpg

As you can see, a vast array of conversions and kitbashes, backed up by exquisite paintjobs. This plog is one that makes the way I do showcases very hard, because I'm sitting here thinking 'Oh, I should put in this, and this and... this thing here!' and before you know it every single picture is in this thread! I've only scratched the surface of the plog here, really.

Much like KrautScientist, Augustus cares about the positioning of his stuff to and almost insane degree, but it really shows. If you enjoy looking at awesome pictures of awesome models, and also reading the finer points of exactly how to get your stuff looking like that, then this is the plog for you! Also, at 50 pages it's a good few evenings worth of stuff. In addition, Augustus has a Hall of Heroes thread where he posts like, several hundred more photos of everything, in case you need different angles on a model.

Thankyou for your patience, and don't forget to check out the Night Lords 47th Company!

Only just seen this. I used to browse KrautScientists back when I was just doing a heresy army (originally a loyalist World Eater force, then home brew Legion that would fall to Khorne). Then, when Daemonkin dropped, his blog was a key driver for me picking it up and running with it. Hordes of inspiration and ideas on how to use different models and conversions. Just awesome.

Another massive strength of Aug's work, is his photography - I'm a terrible culprit for a phone photo on my desk, but that elevates so many great pieces to another level too.

Tutorial? ;)

And so, as the deathly silence of the post-ETL stupor rolls across the forum, thamier's Balefire Legion are here to liven things up!

If anything, the Balefire Legion show that you don't have to have a complex paint scheme with loads of layers and blending and stuff to look utterly awesome. That scheme would look good on models with no conversion work at all. Hell, I *know* the trim does, because I stole it for my Daemonkin. When you back it up with conversions of this calibre though, the results are fantastic.

Not so much of the micro-posing here on individual guys, but a lot of sculptwork and general converting, especially on vehicles. It's another monster of a log, coming in at 50 pages, but as with Augustus b'Raas, these pics only scratch the surface. There's Balefire Legion equivalents of every special character buried in there somewhere for starters. Except Fabius, I think.

Thanks for looking, and remember to leave thamier a comment in his plog if you like his stuff!

I'd like to take a post to have a small ramble about some stuff.

Firstly, thanks for the comments and encouragement! I'm kinda winging this a little bit, it's good to know people are enjoying it. If this thread has pointed you to a plog you didn't know existed and/or inspired you to start your own, please let me know!

Secondly, it's been suggested that I turn the pictures into links to the post they come from. I don't have any massive objections to this (just means a touch more time spent setting the post up), but is it something people would find helpful?

That's not a bad idea actually, I could make the caption the link. I'm also planning on adding links in the first post of the thread to each Showcase post, so people can just click straight through to a specific Showcase and don't have to read the waffle between the posts.

I assume you are contacting the creators of these plogs in advance, it would be nice if you could also include a brief q&a with them to accompany your write-ups although I appreciate that that is more work on your part and requires more co-operation!

Otherwise good job, keep it up!
