Need help: Vostroyan custom dice

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I emailed Chessex about custom dice and the guidelines they provided are quite reasonable.

So now I need ideas on what to put on the 6 side of my custom Vostroyan dice.

My ideas so far:

The ornate lasgun with the words Vostroyan Firstborn

A Vostroyan standing at ease with lasgun to his side

A big roman V with 25th Regiment (my Vostroyan Regiment)

So what ideas can you guys add.

Thanks.

Lord Lee.

In my experiences, and that of many others - and some tests - Chessex dice roll towards 1 more. So I can not recommend them I'm afraid.

For custom dice, a numeral V sounds cool as long as you don't get confused and think it's the 5 :P That or XXV?

Dang, never heard that before. I just got two sweet looking chessex cubes of dice.

Does the salt water test work for D6 like it works to test the balance of a D20?

I have no idea, I'd guess from the shapes it should do albeit perhaps not as well? I remember reading a detailed analysis of it and coupled with my own experiences and that of many other hobbyists I reluctantly shelved my Chessex dice. My rolls are much more even now, I use the GW dice if you're wondering. I have recently acquired some fancy B&C ones but I've not used them enough to gauge but they seem fair so far smile.png

Yes, it's quite weird but I have to agree with WF on this one.  Chessex dice are garbage.  I actually use larger "board game" style dice (about 1/2" size) and I get truly random results.  There's just something weird about how Chessex mold/cure their dice that really does make them roll ones more often.

Hi, folks!

If you're still interested in your own dice (which I find to be really cool and have my own sets) the only option from your list is the "V" with the number "25" somewhere so people don't get confused whether or not that's a "5" or the "V" you're trying to express. (Maybe have the "25" in the crook of the "V" or below it. The other's I think are too much detail for such a small surface area, unless they're selling larger dice.

Regarding the quality of modified (or any other dice) rolling 1's I found this on another site:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/That's_How_I_Roll_-_A_Scientific_Analysis_of_Dice

Personally, I like using my modified dice and am pleased with the colours. Whether or not they're accurate is not something I'm willing to scientifically prove or worry about.

Fixed the link for you JBug, the software really didn't like the apostrophe, or the additional properties pasted in :) That's the article I was referring to, though I'm guessing I read the original as it had a lot more in it but the result is the same.

Hi guys

I had a read of the article but I still like the idea of the custom dice, its odd but from my experience with chessex dice (granted only with about 20 of them) I find them too be quite balanced. I have a win ratio of about 70% with my Vostroyans using those dice for all my special weapons and Sgt.s and there is 6 plasma weapons included.

Thanks for the ideas for the info.

Most "noob" dice have a higher probability of rolling ones because the mass is greater on the 1 side vs the 6 side on account of the holes for the pips.

If you want truly random dice, you need to pony up for casino dice.

For most people, having "slightly higher probability of rolling 1s" ought to be fine, as long as your opponent is using similar dice i.e. not casino dice.

It is also useful to take into account both gamblers fallacy in regards to random probability as well as the fact that people have a strong tendency to remember bad experiences more than good ones. For example a good roll or lucky break is taken in stride, but a bad roll is God trying to ruin your life.

How many times have you groaned for rolling ones and cursed Lady Fate vs how many times you've worshipped her for "that was a decent roll"?
