Knight Magnetizing Guide

Recommended Posts

Hey just wondering if anyone knows of any really, really good knight magnetizing guides? Like ones that have a list of exact magnet sizes I'll need to order and precise instructions on what I should be doing.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

I have magnetized my knight. Every Armor plate (knees, faceplate, shoulders the whole shebang), all the weapon arms ( i have the old knight) and the middle body part so he can turn and be easily dissembled for transportation. His feet are also magnetized to the base.

I used 2x2 mm magnets for all the armor plates ( sometimes used 1x2mm if the area is not deep enough to fit 2mm)

big 1cm by 1cm at the waist, i fitted it under that small waist dome that fits into his chest area and put a 1cm x 2mm into the chest.

Its quite easy to figure out where to put magnets since all the armor plates have slots into which they fit in and I just put magnets into those slots with a drillbit.

*EDIT#1*  It might be confusing so ill take pictures for you and post them in a bit.

*EDIT#2* I took all the pictures of my knight sorry for some :cussty quality though. I dont know if there are any other guides so i just made one for you :D.

Make sure to quadruple check your magnetic alignment,or you will :cuss yourself up and might have to damage the model. I know some of my magnetization look ugly but you never see those magnets so it doesnt matter. Of-course can be done cleaner. Use the most powerfull magnets you can find.

P.S please dont judge my painting too harshly I barely even worked on painting him. He is still very much work in progress.

That is actually super informative thank you, and basically exactly what I needed. I was going to assume that larger magnets would be required but I think I have similar magnets of my own though will probably check and order the 1x1 or 1x2s youve displayed here.

One question though, that magnet that holds the legs to the body, do you find that it just flops around at all or is it a pretty solid connection?

Edit: Magnets arent going to be seen so who gives a :censored: if their mounting looks ugly :tongue.: also paint job looks fine, you can achieve a white/cream colour far better than I ever could haha, plus as long as you're happy with it that's all that matters! Or as I like to tell myself at 3am in the morning, "it'll look better after I wake up and wash it down tomorrow" haha!

I use 6mm magnets for my torso/legs joint, and have no issues with wobble under normal conditions.

Additionally (not shown in Stormxlr's pics), the cup of the arm is a great place for magnetization. You do have to file down the upper arm a touch (mainly the lip that holds it in the lower arm), then drill it out for your magnet (again, 6mm works great there), and you may need to add green stuff in the cup of the lower arm, but doing that allows you to swap out weapons easily.

there are no 1x1, smallest ones are 1x2.

Leg to body one is really powerful and unless you try to force it to fall off, it wont. I usually grab the body when i move it around and the mag can easily hold the legs and the very heavy base.

Again try to find the most powerful magnets available.

you will need a 2mm drillbit, greenstuff, sharp hobby knife, and probably tweezers. I use 2mm magnets for my DW terminator hands for example.

Thanks btw :D im still working on it and its quite far from done, still got bunch banners and DA symbols to add.

Yeah after rereading that was my bad and I am going to have to get myself some 1x2 magnets, and then as Carlson said I'll probably get some big 6mm ones for the body, just cause haha

Edit: are these the size magnets you mean? Sorry but I always get measurements and such mixed up, I'm horrible like that haha http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50-x-Disc-Rare-Earth-Neodymium-Magnets-N50-2mm-x-1mm-/300816346604?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item460a0d2dec

I think I know waht arm part you're talking about, I've watched a few videos and I get the general idea, but knowing that I can do it with these small magnets too is also very nice, as I have some magnets already but they may be just a bit too small :/

Edit: I was thinking of getting some 6x1.5mm magnets for the waist joint, but will a 1.5 thick magnet fit in the area?

Yes if this ones are 1mm thick and 2mm wide? N50 strength is good. Get like 100 of them you will loose them left and right. Trust me :)

I dont see why you want 2x 6mm for the leg to torso connection? I am using total of 11mm (10+1) and its already a bit too tall in that area, so actually going lower would be better so maybe 5x5 if you want. But you will have to allign them nicely. I suggest getting 5x5 and 10x1 or 9x1 or 9x2.

What is this cup area you guys talking about im not following? Is it the part where the elbows connect?

I'm thinking of putting a 6x1.5mm within the leg side of the torso, and then putting the corresponding magnet on the inside of the body instead, maybe drilling straight through and using greenstuff or something to mount the magnet inside.

There's like, a two part arm section that you can magnetize, there's an upper arm section that connects to the shoulder and then the lower arm section that connects to the gun. I could use 6x1.5 magnets with those sections too

I forgot to show that my gun is also magnetized so i can switch for thermal cannon or battle cannon but i think you can figure that one yourself :D

yes i guess you would need to magnetize that elbow section, but i didnt need to since i have the old mk1 knight :P

Well for now I guess I'm going to have to wait, but building a knight is an enticing idea, just need to wait for the chaos knights to get released from FW :D

This went up at a good time since I'm going to be buying a knight in a week or so hopefully and I want to magnetize at least the lower arm to swap weapons. Ill probably only magnetize that unless I feel up for more but this helps a lot. Edited by Lysere

If there's one thing I've picked up on from reading is that you're definitely going to want to mag the waist otherwise you're gonna love life transporting him :P

You dont have to mag the waist originally I had my knight with a bolt and (that round thing bolts screw in? a bolt cap? )

Thats why you can see on one of the photos there is a green stuffed hole where the bolt used to comeout from the waist and i had a bolt cap green stuffed into the leg dome area. screw him in screw him out :smile.: lol can make so many puns.

I'll keep that in mind. Still haven't decided what I'll want to use to move him. It'll be a while until it's even built so plenty of time.

I magnetized all my bases so i use a big metal box. I have 2 of different size one can fit 2000+ points of my Deathwing (1LR,33 Terminators,3 Dreadnoughts(Contemptor,Chaplain,Mortis) and my Imperial Knight.

I did not have to have Drop Pods in 6th Edition for my Deathwing dreads but will have to now :sad.:

Another box is quite big and I can fit a whole company with all the support vehicles and all of my Deathwing. will take a picture for you.

I am using one of those Doctor boxes they use for house visits, they are incredibly spacious on the inside and are well designed to house a lot of items.

Here are my 2 boxes

big one is 28cm tall x 24cm wide (Total cost 34 USD with delivery and steel plates, the box it self was 23 usd.)

small one is 12cm tall x 38cm wide ( total cost with delivery 14 usd)

Big Box

all the walls and floors are lined with 0.5mm steel plates so my bases can easily magnetize to them.

the bottom level of this box can hold 8 Rhinos. I can add a second level there by adding another steel plate(held in by powerful square magnets) so it can hold another 8.

The bottoms of my vehicles have powerful flat long magnet so they can stick to the metal surface.

smaller box is made of iron so i didnt need to line it.

Nice boxes. I don't plan on using metal boxes, I prefer foam. Still That first one looks nice. I need a home for multiple Land Raiders as well as the eventual knight, or 5.

why foam, they are more expensive, you cant store as many models and if you want to you have to use a giant box.
