The Wolverines Valiant

Origins

The Wolverines Valiant was founded in the 41st millennium to partake in a crusade into the Octarius Sector in the Ulitimar Segmentum and reclaim planets left from the Orks and Tyranids. Taken from the genestock of Roboute Gulliman, believing the threat within the Ultimar Segmentum would be fought with greater fury if taken from Ultramarine stock.

Trained by the loyal Silver Skulls chapter, the Wolverines Valiant learned the Codex Astartes and tactics used by Ultramarines. During the time of training the Wolverines picked up the habit of collecting skulls and artifacts of defeated enemies to keep on their person or back in the Hall of Victory in the fortress monastery. On the mission named “The Purge”, the Wolverines assisted the Silver Skulls in cleansing the world Equinox of all Chaos taint. This left millions of citizens dead in the streets.

Home World

On the outer edge of the Ultima Segmentum, near the Eastern Fringe, lies the cold world of Meshegan. Given to the Wolverines as a recruiting world as a quick resource center. Meshegan’s 12 billion citizens toil over the harsh land to be a self-sustained world. Throughout the world there are many industrial cities which produce arms and ammo for their lords. The Wolverines rule with little care as long as the citizens produce the resources needed, guardsman and the elite fighters become great marines.

Meshegan was first discovered by Rogue Trader in the late 36th Millennium. Selected for its mass land and deep metal resources, Meshegan was colonized in the mid-37th Millennium. Unknown to the first colonists, the land was already inhabited by native humans who had given themselves over to the Dark Gods. Known by the locals as the “Red Ones”, as all found natives had covered themselves in the blood of others. Once discovered, the native population was executed and the caves they hid in purged and closed with Holy rituals of the Inquisition.

Centuries of industrial mining and manufacturing metals have taken their toll on the land, resources are becoming rarer and the AdMec is seeing less use of the world. The Wolverines were given the world on the decline of the world, believing the populace would produce tougher recruits and inspire the populace into producing more.

Deep within the largest mountain, on the largest island, lays the fortress monastery Anarba where citizens make pilgrimages to honor and respect their protectors and Angels whom they rarely see.

Population: 1.5 Billion

Export: Building materials, cargo ships

Combat Doctrine

Wolverines believe in smash mouth tactics and revel in close combat. Most marines through the years keep trophies of opponents bested in close combat and greatly take care of all close combat weapons. While loving close combat, Wolverines do not fields more assault squads, believing to whittle down the foe with weapons fire and mopping up the strongest foes left with hand to hand combat and flamers.

Organization

As a true decedent of the Ultramarines, the Wolverines Valiant stay true to the Codex Astartes. Currently the Wolverines are understrength due to a violent opening campaign into the Charadon Empire. During the opening campaign there was mass success until the Waaagh of Bone Breka cost the 2nd, 3rd and 8th companies 50% strength in the battle for Fitz Hive on Grimdi.

Beliefs

Wolverines believe in the purity and greatness of all Space Marines. Brothers in arms will always take priority over any non-marine. Wolverines have been known to abandoned human populations to save a squad of marines and will sacrifice guardsman with little thought. While knowing the lives of all marines matter more than most, the Wolverines are truly aware their own deaths are always close. This drives their urge to fight in hand to hand combat, for it is better to die at the hands of the better enemy than to be lost in the warp traveling to the next fight. Wolvirnes have a deep distrust of the Warp and all Astropaths, stemming from the Wolverines study of the Fire Hawks. To die outside of battle and service to the Emperor is the utmost disaster to any Wolverine.

Wolverines developed a mutual respect for the Adeptus Arbites due to their ruthless rule of the land and putting the greater good above human life. On the planet of Yio XI, the Arbites executed the entire government body when found they would not utilize their own household guards in defending the city from the food riots.

Gene-seed
Taken from the Ultramarine stock the Wolverines Valiant have pure stock with no known flaws.

History

The Wolverines were also taught the atrocities brought about by the Minotaurs chapter during the Macharian Heresy. During the Macharian Heresy the Minotaurs crippled two Ultramarines successors and insulted Calgar. The Wolverines vowed to fight the Minotaurs and protect any Ultramarine chapter from the Minotaurs ruthless tactics.

I'm pretty sure they revel in close combat and don't revile it. msn-wink.gif

There is one s too many in "While loving close combat, Wolverines do not fields more assault squads"

Otherwise it is a good start. Why are they so afraid of being lost in the warp? Is it more terrifying that dying in another non-combat related situation?

Is the fleet section incomplete? Is the name Righteous Fury intentionally written in one word? If so, why? There also is a Gothic class Cruiser of the same name already.

Where have I heard that Battlecry before? Must have been in one of the Sharpe novels.

Can't tell what to make of the name, it's a bit of a mouthful but is also quite a cool combination. Still, I think I like it. Perhaps developing how they've come from the proud Ultramarine lineage and become so self-important and vicious would be worth your while?

The homeworld culture and practices seem like they could make for some nice narrative.

Interested to see what else you make of them :)

Good call on the grammar and sentence formatting. What can be worse than being lost in the warp to damnantion. I went with righteousfury as its my gamer name lol. I can seperate it. Yes it's very much incomplete and working in progress. Battle cry is a real battle cry. I forget where. I'll look up again.

I love your work so far man its really good. I know this is somewhat irrelevant but they way you framed your sentence about the Arbites made me chuckle a bit. Cant wait to see what its like when you're complete (oh and btw in organisation you spelt it as Waaagh Bone BREKA

Seems good so far. I like the way you show that these do what needs to be done, even at the expense of human lives : these are no nambypambys. You might want to consider writing a sample battle to put this into relief ?

I agree with Draakur about the name though : would it be a good idea to just call them the wolverines ? it seems like an uncommon enough name pre/suffix in space marines chapters to shorten it to just that. Then you'd have to decide whether you go all out and give them yellow and black uniforms, with silver fingers, or if you give them something completely different msn-wink.gif

(oh and btw in organisation you spelt it as Waaagh Bone BREKA)

Aint dat duh korrek' spelin' fur unh Ork ?

Arbites don't really rule the land, though. They are more like the FBI in jurisdiction crossed with Judge Dredd in method.

Maybe make it more of how they enforce the ideals of a perfect law for the Emperor or something?

They are already painted. Blue legs, pauldron, helmets. Yellow "strip" on helmet. Yellow w on shoulder. The Wolverines by self reminds me space wolves or something. I am open to suggestions though. If people think to much I can cut down or just refer normally as wolverines

Ah, have you clicked the "Halved Scheme" in one of the scroll boxes under the picture in the painter ? If so, it picks out the colour in "Halved Scheme" on the right hand side. Just take the "Plain Scheme" in the box.

I forgot to ask what you meant when you said that they were trained by the Silver Skulls and Doom Warriors. And I'm not very aware of the history of the Minotaurs, so what do you mean by that part on the Wolverines vowing with the sons of guilliman, and what are they vowing to do ?

My bad, i seemed to have mixed their teachings. I have changed it and added why Ultramarines and the successors hate the Minotaurs. Its real GW history.

Chapter Master Harbo: Like most Wolverines Valiant, Chapter Master Joimili Harbo hailed from their home world of Meshegan. His blood lines tracing back to the local PDF, where his father served as a Sargent. Harbo himself was an acclaimed scout during his training, where he boasted he could kill a Herald of Khorne himself. This was much chastised by his training Sargent at the time. Harbo found himself the opportunity at the end of the Wrilno Campaign. Legend tells of how the scout wounded the Herald with his precision fire then finished it off in brutal hand to hand combat, earning him his full honors as a Wolverine Valiant.

Through the years Harbo continued to earn honor with his merciless bolter fire tactics and hand to hand combat. Eventually he was promoted to Captain of the 5th after the previous captain *name struck from records* dishonored himself by sacrificing squads of Asartes to save the local PDF. During his time as Captain Harbo drilled his troops further and longer higher than even an Asartes was used to. He is known for grounding opponents into the ground with swarming Tactical Marines and Devastator fire, before following up with ruthless close combat tactics. He continued his mastery of Demons and earned honors throughout the sector for his training regimens.

Captain Harbo eventually caught the eye of the Deathwatch, where the Master of the Hunt called upon his expertise to fight the *CLASSIFIED*. Being the first member of the Wolverines Valiant to be called upon the honor Deathwatch he dutifully left to don the black.

During his time with the Deathwatch the Wolverines Valiant became a shell of their former glory. Multiple Chapter Masters fell in combat to the Chaos Traitors and the Chapter losses became overwhelming. The Wolverines Valiant were sent back to their homeworld to regroup and reorganize. This was when Harbo returned from his time at the Deathwatch, without hesitation the Veterans of the Chapter elected Harbo to become the next Chapter Master and rebuild their glory.

Newly minted Chapter Master Harbo has rebuilt the strength of the chapter and drills them viciously in the tactics he has honed through the years. When Harbo takes to the fiery crucible of war he is known to go into battle wearing his Artificer armor and wielding his powerfist *Righteous Fist*(a gift from the Deathwatch) and Storm Bolter.
