The last time I played apocalypse (which was some time ago) I attempted to expand my existing army into an assembled and painted battle company.  I didn't *totally* succeed in that endeavor; a number of models were merely base coated, and about 8 marines weren't even totally assembled. Yet I managed to get things to a point that I could field them, even if a significant number of models weren't exactly 'table top standard'.

And so it came to pass that the following warhost entered the fields of some battle that has since been lost in whatever abyss my blog posts fell into.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/apochforcekey_zpsee148f94.jpg

and with THAT as a reference point...

let us flash forward to more recent times.  I've been in the midst of an escalation league run by my FLGS, an event that is to end in what should be a large apocalypse game, with the primary restriction being that players may not field a faction different from what they ran during the league.  That game is to take place the middle of September, and so my goal is to get my new devastator company done by then, along with whatever else(i.e. finishing bike squads etc.).  While the main focus of this project is to be the devastator company, I have other things I'll be working on to field along side it and my (somewhat more complete than last time) existing battle company.  I'll be posting a list of the intended force later tonight along with more details as to where things stand progress wise.

EDIT: intended list, without going into much detail:

Battle company (Salamanders chapter tactics) led by captain not-vulcan He'stan (i.e. vulcan counts-as)

Devastator company (Imperial Fist chapter tactics, because why wouldn't you?)

1st company task force - cause I had termies with nothing better to do.

10th company task force - cause I had sniper scouts with nothing better to do

storm wing

armoured task force - includes 8 tanks

combined arms detachment that all my other un-assigned models conveniently fit into.

@War Angel: I'm going to answer this on the assumption that you're referring to the dev company specifically.

I constructed the list for my battle company under the previous codex, and at the time I was very keen on anti-air.  Because of this I went crazy on the missile launchers and had visions of imperial fist successor devastator squads with missile launchers and vengence fortifications shutting down enemy air with an atrociously high volume of S7 tank hunter shots.  That was the idea I originally toyed with.  Now a couple of things modified that vision, one being budget (and bit collection), and the other being practical concerns as to what might be a better option.  Also, I have more flyers now, so anti-air is now less of a worry for me.

The resulting build has thus evolved into the following:
6 dev squads  with 4 missile launchers each
4 dev squads with 2 las-cannons and 2 heavy bolters each

The intention of the 4 split squads is that the sergeant and las-cannons form one combat squad to capitalize on the signum since the heavy bolters are already re-rolling 1's due to chapter tactics.

my options for the requisite dreadnoughts are fixed already as I got them all second hand without any extras, and that would be
1 dreadnaught w/ multi-melta and fist
1 dred w/ assault cannon and missile launcher
1 venerable with las-cannon and fist

I've no set plan currently on the captain, chaplain or command squad except that the chaplain will have either a bike or jump pack, since those are the two chaplain models I have.

I'm now in the process of striping paint from what I think are about 40 marines, so while I take a break from that to write this, here's some freshly taken shots of the storm wing.

so not much done between work and other things, although weather permitting I've a sizable amount that I expect to get primed tomorrow.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5085_zpsultfkhyt.jpg

all that probably accounts for about 50-60% of the unprimed stuff.  there's also 2 centurion boxes and an assault marine box I haven't opened yet,

plus four tanks and two dreadnoughts I still have to strip, plus another dred and rhino to paint on top of that.  ...oh, and then there's the three bikes, and thirty-something

marines  currently in the strip bath, and about a dozen metal figures besides. ...and I think that's what still needs to be base coated.   ...oh, and the new devastators box I got.

this should be ...fun.

the weather today finally cooperated long enough for me to get a large chunk of my to-do list base coated. I had some things primed partially last wednesday. Then warp storms appeared and it started raining while models were in the open, so parts of the model that hadn't dried yet were puckered, bumpy and lifting off with a light rub of the fingers.  I found that soapy water and a tooth brush are good for cleaning up crap prime jobs of that nature as they get the paint off that's been ruined by the rain water, but don't remove the paint that had actually had a chance to set properly.  So all that got re-primed today, along with some other things.  As far as the company is concerned, I think I've got about two thirds of the non-vehicles ready to be base coated.

So while things set and the spray fumes finish dissipating, here's a little of what's already been done for the other detachments.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5087_zpsatlyj0ir.jpg

As mentioned, the combined arms detachment is meant to include those models I couldn't fit into some other detachment elsewhere in the list. The troop section is to include bike squads led by a chaplain, but I'm not sure how I'm splitting them up, since I've got 16 bikes and 2 attack bikes with parts for a third, so it may be 2 squads, or it may be 3, I haven't decided.

and now for some units actually part of the dev company.  ...well some of them are anyway.  DREADNOUGHTS GO!

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5091_zpsoz8o45fr.jpg

and close ups.

It may be difficult to tell from the head on shot, so the non-iron clads have as follows:

left dread - assault cannon, missile launcher

middle dread - multi-melta and fist that's going to have a heavy flamer later

right (i.e. venerable) - twin linked las and a fist that's probably keeping the storm bolter.

I have an incoming regular dreadnought off ebay that will need some modification (actually DE-modification) due to its ...odd assembly.  It has a spare las-cannon arm that will be replacing the assault cannon on the missile dread.  At that point the question becomes whether to replace the las-cannon on the venerable with an assault cannon. If anyone has any suggestions on which is better for the venerable, I'm all ears.  I don't really have much weapon choices for them beyond that.

I also have a third iron clad that I'm undecided on where to put him, mostly because I can't decide between building the centurions as devastators (making them heavy support for the combined arms detachment) or as assaults (for the centurion cohort)  I only have six centurions so I can't really do both.  Suggestions on those two options are definitely welcome.

quick update with today's progress.  painting the interior and crew for a few of these is probably going to be obnoxious, but that's half the fun isn't it?

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5094_zpsrki5rlpg.jpg

so I'm ultimately going for something like this for the speeders; picture is a little washed out, and I need to re-attach the multimelta, but I think it gets the idea across.

  • 2 weeks later...

good grief it's been a while since my last post!  So things have been kinda busy for the past few weeks, particularly last week, but I'm back to working on things.  so last weekend I did some relatively quick and dirty drybrushing on about half the company which produced the following:

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5101_zpszflvkweo.jpg

all that was last weekend, and as of this evening I started putting some of the color in for the blue bringing things to their current state, as of a few minutes ago.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5107_zpsq3ehnuzn.jpg

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5106_zps0jskdkic.jpg

obviously still a fair bit to do on these guys, between weapons and other bits still needing to be re-attached, and considering I still have the other half of the company to do, including most of the actual heavy weapon carriers.  Still it's progress.  ....aaannnnd, now back to painting.

group shot of the company so far, including some models that still need repainting.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5111_zpslpqj3zzk.jpg

These are the models that are at least mostly assembed.  As you may notice, the majority of what's missing are the heavy weapons users themselves.  Some of you may also notice that one of the dreadnoughts is not in this shot.  The reason for this is that the melta dread is being transferred to the battle company. His replacement is the new (used) one I mentioned a few posts back.

speaking of the battle company...

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5112_zpsvmv13n1i.jpg

the two dev squads for the battle company have become part of the devastator company, and so I'll need to put together their replacements, which I've decided will be two plasma-cannon dev squads (i.e. 8 plasma cannons).  That's mostly based on what I've got available.  ...and yes each of those tactical squads has a multi-melta and a meltagun (or will).

things are continuing to move along.  I've now done part of the sub-assembly for heavy weapons.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5113_zps4ycorxqf.jpg

what's more, I've determined that my choice of spray primer does not work all that well with high (ambient) humidity, but that's what the weather does here in the summer.  ...that and I DID go with a cheap spray primer (and you get what you pay for).  So all that led to an absurd amount of paint lifting... again.  So soap and water, a little scrubbing, and about 30 minutes to an hour later (wasn't keeping track)  and we get these two piles...

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5114_zpsnelzctwb.jpg

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5115_zpsatfvo8el.jpg

I don't remember what exactly is in there, as I still have some more stuff to prime.  It does include most, if not all, of the remaining devastators bits,

among other things.  Anyway, that still has to dry.

now THIS army... is what one can call "ambition".    Looking forward to seeing how the heavy weapons turn out.  I had awful time with the plastics, even though I love using plastic weld to get them set up.

Liking the "Tron blue+black" setup as well.

so I've ALMOST finished priming everything.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5117_zpsea1hfidj.jpg

that and two more boards got done today, including lots of heads, yes HEADS FOR EVERYONE!

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/head%20shot_zps8vgzidja.jpg

so that finishes out the bits for the devastators, centurions, and some other things.

still to be STRIPPED:

two predators

five marines,

one iron clad

one regular dreadnought

one venerable dreadnought

one razorback

one rhino

one vindicator

still to be BASE-COATED / PRIMED:

the above, obviously...

one land speeder typhoon

one iron clad

one bike chaplain

one PA librarian

one terminator librarian

one rhino

priority at this point  will be to the infantry, then dreads, then the rest will be played by ear.

just got through most of the sub-assembly, and looking at the way these guys fit together, I think I'm going to start taking the brush to them before further assembly.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5124_zpsondh85w1.jpg

close ups for the curious

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5128_zps6tprn4zw.jpg

so apparently I still have to dig through the box full of bits to find a few things, namely some of the left arms for the heavy weapons, as well as the heads, and about three missile launchers, but this is enough for me to start going to town with the torsos and legs.  so yeah, all but two of those bodies are going to have a really big gun attached to it.

and of mild interest to some people... just to put in perspective how many bits are in two centurion boxs,

quick update, since I don't expect to get much more done tonight.

so first I went over the bodies with a black layer (slightly watered down).

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5132_zpseq5qlcm9.jpg

and then some mid-gray dry brush, followed by a very light gray for the highlights.  ...and I don't know what's going on with the light fall-off in the picture because the room wasn't THAT dark.

http://i547.photobucket.com/albums/hh464/unpronouncable/IMG_5133_zpsjtyxr8sp.jpg

I also blacked over the non-missile launcher backpacks, so still to go for the base coat are the missile launcher backpacks, heads, and the actual guns.

oh look, another marine with a bolter....  but in all seriousness, I had to do at least one dev' who was kneeling with something other than a missile launcher.

given the time frame I'm working with, I'm going to call this guy 'done' for purposes of something I'd be happy fielding just long enough to get blasted into oblivion by any of the modest number of d-weapons and just general abundance of dakka that I'm expecting.  So yeah, chapter symbol, squad markings and all the other embellishments will be later.... much later.

in other news, I just bought 20 more tacticals, a regular PA chaplain, and a vulcan model.  Both vulcan and the chappy are metal, which I'm happy with.  The PA chaplain will be replacing my bike chaplain in the dev company.  The bike chaplain will then lead the combined arms detachment with bikes filling the troops slots.  Vulcan will be replacing his proxy in the battle company.  Said proxy will join the extra tacticals to fill their respective roles in either a new demi-company or a new combined arms detachment.  If the former then I'll need to figure out what I'm doing with my two librarians. Considering the state of one of those libby's and the time frame, I'll likely just hold off on assembling him and go with the demi-company option.

and at the risk of being long-winded, I still need to locate some of the bits for twelve of the heavy weapons (mostly the left arm bits).

got the blue on the remaining torsos down, and more interestingly it's now 4 down, 46 to go; and I must say that getting the ammo-feed for the plasma to fit properly was a pain.

and now for the group shot, with its missing bolters and everything.  Two of the dreadnoughts and the last heavy bolter are currently in the strip bath.

As mentioned before, the major motivation for all this is an apocalypse game taking place this weekend.  This is being hosted by my LGS and is scheduled to start setup 10:00 am saturday and then run until midnight, after which we'll pick back up sunday at 10:00am again and finish at 11:00pm, assuming of course that one side doesn't get destroyed sooner than that.  This is being done under the understanding that players will be in and out, so if a player is out for a while then their allies would be controlling their models in their stead in the meantime.

At this point, painting is going to be on hold until after the game is over. Now it's just gonna be a small scramble to get certain models glued together, or back together. Because I'm a little excited, and a little impatient, I'm going to go ahead and post the finalized list of what I'll actually be fielding. I'll post a little better formatted version with pictures when time permits.

Good grief.. few more vehicles and you'll have a whole chapter's worth of miniatures

hehe..., bear in mind that the 1st and 10th company task forces are only 15 models each, so things are legitimately more like a FOURTH of a whole chapter.

so the apocalypse is over, after three full rounds. We had about 21,000 to a side, which got bolstered later to about 27,000 as other players showed up. Three models survived from the devastator company: two from one combat squad and one from another. This was partly due to a reaver titan going critical for a 72" strength D explosion, ....which was glorious. The battle report should be forthcoming later this week.

Our side initially included my forces, various blood angels, and a small taskforce of black templar and imperial guard.  we also had tau on our side for some reason.  we were later joined by more guard, skitarii, and necrons (because... reasons).

On the opposing side one guy brought a little under 15k of chaos marines and daemons; the rest of their forces were mostly dark eldar, but also a modest amount of tau.

In the aftermath of all this chaos, my chapter is to mark this day as a momentous event; for not only did their forces perform most valiantly in a manner befitting of space marines and the noble legacy that they carry; today they also receive a new acquisition to their armoury.  Yes, after nine years of playing this game, and being in possession of over 10k points worth of marines, I now finally have a drop pod. May it serve the chapter well.
