Quick and Dirty magnetized weapons for Imperial Knight

Recommended Posts

Well like it says, here's some pictures of how I magnetized my entire Knight.  (not entirely painted yet)  I'm sure lots of other people have done this by now, and may have done it much cleaner than I did, but once this thing is all together it fits perfect and can be posed etc.

It's not real fancy and I did the whole thing in a couple hours.  The first picture shows magnet placement for the Thermal and Rapid fire battle canon pieces, I just used little bits of chopped up sprue and some thin plastic card stock "shims" to get the levels correct.  I found you're better off being a hair shallow rather than having the magnets touch and be a hair too close.

You can also see the Melta/Stubber in this picture.  I just glued on the "cap" that surrounds the shaft for these, glued on a thin magnet, and then cut off the section of the gun that is captive where the cap used to go, glued on another magnet, and boom off to the races.  This whole section is obscured by the carapace armor anyway so I found it to be more than adequate.

This picture shows the placement of the magnet for the Tank/Ammo Hopper so you can swap them out depending on the gun load.

This shot shows a little better the battle canon assembly.. and if you look closely at the Ammo-feed assembly (on top in this picture) you can see some grey plastic exposed.  I had to trim this area a little with a sharp exacto to get the whole assembly to go on smooth without scraping the paint.

Up next is the magnet placement I went with for the assault canon.

Pretty basic, (I didn't glue the cylinders on yet) but it's the same basic layout as the other gun)

This picture shows the way I magnetized the rocket pod.  You can see the depth of the magnet for carapace mounting, and you can see the location of the magnet to hold the front piece on.

http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae25/brettnephew/DSCN16641.jpg

Heres the matching location for the front piece (same spot on both).

And then because I'm a fiend for options, I magnetized his head.

And the masks (same position on all three, just make sure you get your poles lined up correctly)

That's pretty much It.  I also did this for the chainsword and fist, if anyone is interested I can post pics of that too, but that was even easier.

This picture shows the location for the Chainsword magnetization locations NOTE:  due to the magnet location I did have to trim off a little bit of the "Tilt" cylinder which sticks out of the top of the chainsword, but being that it should make greater than a 90 degree angle with the upper arm,  it's not noticeable.

This Pic shows the locations on the fist, and the small conversion I did to mine, using some Genestealer claws to give the fist a little more of a claw look (which will be painted to match my force swords on the GK dudes)

Yep! Just glue a magnet in that hole like this, and then trim off the corresponding thickness on the Forearm/Elbow piece (seen right there in the background and the above picture)

http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae25/brettnephew/DSCN16731.jpg

The whole thing goes together smooth and looks Fantastic (In my opinion)

and then finally both done

Looks good to me, since you've come this far you may as well post up the lot ;)

I've only got the original Knight kit but am looking to get the Warden and have pieces magnetise across both. Is there anything in particular I'd need to know? For example the stubber/melta and spare bits etc? From what I've seen I think the kits are separate but easily interchangeable so there shouldn't be any special considerations.

Gotten both kits myself, and the Warden kit can make every option available in the Knights Codex as it is now (basically old kit with extra sprue in it).

Didn't magnetize the stubber or melta, 'cause they just snap-fit on their little handlebar there, and the Warden kit adds 2 new arms (one each dedicated to the fist/assault cannon)

I'm kinda suprised BetterOffShred, why did you magnetize the gatling cannon? I'm also liking the mask magnet, didn't think of that before!

Magnetized the Gatling gun so he can wield it right or left handed msn-wink.gif True story. I figured I'd like to the options of moving everything around.

Yeah, magnetizing the masks was really easy. I magnetized and painted three of them to match the helmets of my Grey Knight squads. So he can have the blue helmet to match my Purgators (for heavy weapons loadout) or the Bronze helmet to match my Paladins squad (CC oriented) or the Red mask to match my interceptors squads (which are kind of jack of all trades load outs). I'll post the other pics today!

And yes WarriorFish, as Argun said, they literally just put an extra sprue in the box. They didn't change it at all. As for the original carapace piece I'm not sure if it has the hole drilled in it where you mount the missile rack/AA gun, but a little precision work with the dremel is all you need to get that magnet countersunk.

Really nice to see this. I admit some of it is foggy to me because I haven't slapped the model together yet, but I will definitely revisit this.

I did wonder one thing: why not use green stuff for your 'shims'?

Gotta mix it up.. shape it.. wait for it to dry.. I just used some super thin plastic stock.  Dunno, Green stuff is a good idea you could stick the magnets together and squish it in there and then let it dry.  Yeah that's a good idea :)  I just happened to use plastic stuff.  It's probably from all my years of being a mechanic.  You have to start with stacks of material!

Good Idea Prot :)
