IL XVI - The Drowned

I'm thinking that a scene with Pionus, one of the Librarians alongside him views Morro's aura. Used as he is to watching Morro's aura, and experiencing the withering heat, and not a drop of wind, he knows something is up with Morro when his mental picture of him in a boat on the glassy surface, and then literally feels the lightest gust of air play with the hairs of unshaven head and beard. All he can do is turn to his Primarch, and say "Run" before Morro can't hold back anymore, the psychic force killing the Scion Librarian, and him dropping like a cut string.

If I have the time, I might have a crack at this scene. Actually, I wanted to ask if you had any particular image of how the Drowned would fight - Slips and I were thinking that Skerro could hunt down and butcher a Scions officer, with Morro sending units specifically to kill the leading Captains. With half the Déka on the planet, three die, Odyssalas is missing, presumed dead and only Mytakis of the Depthstriders is left to carry Pionus to safety.

The Drowned's modus operandi is a simulatenous strike, swamping all the particular locations at the same time, in an effort to slowndown the opponent for a long time, until the heavy strike elements of the Drowned can hit, called the Rostrum.

As such, they often go equipped with both Boltgun, Bolt Pistol and Chainsword, alongside Breachers. Graviton Weapons, and Phospex Fires, along with other area denial weapons like Artillery and Air Support are used in an effort to slow down enemies who would attempt to close with the Drowned.

The other side to the Drowned is a preferred tactic of coming from non linear angles; hence a preference for Drop Pods, Flyer borne Deep Deep Strikes and the near unique use of the Hades Breaching Drills to come from below.

The first Rite of War is the one which theynwould use; no Forlorn, and no Daemons.

The Terminators of the legion use almost exclusively Tartaros Pattern, and the Charonic Seekers, are equipped with Havoc Launchers, Chainfists, and Rotor Cannons, with some using the Iliastus-Pattern Assault Cannon or Cyclone Missile Launcher. These units are intended to Deep Strike on units, and unleash a hail of firepower. They used Nuncio Vox to pinpoint the location of the target.

The Pelagic Monarchs are a unit equipped with huge breacher shields, and bidents, and lead by 'Ayatollah's', in full 'Ayatollah of the Abyss'.

Skerro could be one of the Line Captains, along with Renno (see OP). These would fight as Astartes normally do, but call on help from the Charonic Seekers to act as a predator Missile/AC130 for Call of Duty Kill Streaks.

To add to the nature of Claustrophobia, is it a Zone Mortalis fight, with water rushing in, lights going on and off etc?

The general idea for a mission would be for just after that to have mission with Pionus being carried by Mytakis to a waiting Stormbird, with Morro chasing, while other members of his forces try to claim objectives, like the Command Centre to control the doors and slow down Pionus enough for Morro to get to him.

I don't think I am to be honest mate. I think they're perfectly well within the realms of Slaanesh in the Canonverse, but in Broverse, I do not see it being as a major thing; instead, it's Slaanesh who feeds off the repressed feelings of Morro and the despair of the Drowned at the situation they are thrown into, rather than the need to seek excesses.

One idea though, is a generic "noise marine" unit to be taken by Traitor legions? That way we can all join in the fun. They don't necessarily have to be Drowned exclusive that way, but there can be Drowned Noise marines.

Fluffwise that makes a lot of sense, Slaanesh shouldn't be called the god of excesses but more so the Extremes. Slaanesh very well could feed off of dread, dispare, and depression; as it takes hold of The Drowned he would amplify those feelings to absolute extremes where they would become hellish outward manifestations, and the legion would use it as a weapon, they'd become immune to all but the most extreme versions of it so they might seek to terrorize others to feed of off their emotions sort of like psychic vampirism. Or that's my thought at least on how it happened.

Well, Rustwalkers began as specialist Skitarii designed to hunt down exiles and crazed servitors outside Martian cities and quickly became militarised. Their main thing is to use transonic weapons, which cycle through sound frequencies until they find once that will cut through whatever armour their enemies are wearing. As a consequence, the weapons emit keening noises that drive most mortal troops to despair. Which would seem to fit with The Drowned's MO.

I think Noise Marines could work as a Chaos Undivided thing, but for most it'd seem impractical as opposed to conventional weapons. We do have some Traitor Serpents and Halcyon Wardens to play with as Slaaneshi types, in any case.

That sounds like it could work rather well, and take yet a step back from Emperor's Children :)

Well, as with the Godslayers, the nature of the alignment is different. Come to think of it, the Dune Serpents' traitors would be neat with noise stuff.

Either way, this gives my idea for a deranged conductor something to use as a baton.

Done.

"Any Independent Character, or model with the "Chosen Warriors" special rule that also has the "Legiones Astartes (The Drowned)" special rule may exchange any weapon they are equipped with for a Transonic Razor for the same cost as any option to select a Power Weapon (if they already have a Power Weapon as part of their equipment, this option is free). If they do not have the option to select a Power Weapon, then they may not take a Transonic Razor. Alternatively, such a model with the option to select a single Lightning Claw may instead select a single Chord Claw for the same cost."

As a quick question, with options like this, are we going to allow Independent Special Characters to pick up options available to the rest of the Legion; i.e Armillus Dynat able to pick up a Power Dagger, Maun with the Cameleoline etc? If so, I'm going to rewrite Boraeo, so that he has an option to replace his Power Sword.

I'd like them to stay rare, in the Legion, but it kind of fits the general Legion's mentality. Hold the foe until help arrives, and so in an ongoing combat, not only are they now Stubborn, but they get the use of an at Initiative AP2 weapon. I'll try and get something written up with the most current rules for the Drowned.

This is half a belated reply and half a question.

To add to the nature of Claustrophobia, is it a Zone Mortalis fight, with water rushing in, lights going on and off etc?

Given that Odyssalas escapes by collapsing a couple of chambers, the rest of the battle can certainly play out that way.

Also, I forgot to ask this before; do you picture the Drowned skewing more towards pirates or Ironborn in terms of their weapons? I'm wondering what I'd like to give Skerro for his wargear.

You might need to expand on that, I'm afraid I don't properly understand the phrasing of the question.

Morro's chosen weapon was a pair of Shotel's. Essentially, a scimitar/khopesh, with the cutting edge on the concave (inside) curve of the blade; in history, it would be used to break past shields, working as a pick axe in effect. (By the way, the image is from a Mod for Medieval 2; Total War, called Broken Crescent, if you have the game (and it's only sale now for dirt cheap, you'll need the Kingdom's expansion to play it), I seriously recommend playing this mod.)

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j278/donlogan/makuria_knights_swordsmen_01.png

Although there wouldn't be an in-game effect, for fluff purposes, it would suit the combat style of the Drowned, being able to attack around a previously shielded or blocked edge. Alternatively, known as a Falx, or a Rhompaia, and in two handed or one handed. It is essentially a sickle, but rather than being curved, it is straight. To the Drowned, they'll call it a "Shotel".

As for their wargear, it's not especially ornate. The opinion of the legion is "why?" However, that is not to say that the legion exclusively goes unembellished; I'm saving up for Alexis Polux model, so as to use him as the base for Cataract Hennsohn, Lord Commander of Legio XVI (the fist in laurels being a Terran mark of honour for this purpose). Their armour is individualised for the most part only as much as they need it, but at the same time, the legion is not averse to someone choosing to embellish it, but it's to be done by their own hand, as they are rarely craftsmen, and those more technically minded often have more important things to be done. As such, the embellishment often ends up looking rather poor (this is a bit meta; I tried to paint it the scheme on some old Black Reach marines I had knocking about and any attempt at filigree looked terrible). However, again, this is dependent on the Astartes actually wearing the armour.

To make Skerro stand out, I think Autilon Skorr could be a baseline; the Daemon-mask (especially if he's a Styxian, and a follower of Morro) and filigree'd armour. A Shotel (maybe a Power one, instead of an axe), and maybe just a simple Bolt Pistol instead of the stick.

If you're going to name squads, it's usually done in the manner of a name of the squads typical Sergeant (called a Sardar, in Styxian; followed by two single digit numbers of the Hebrew language, to represent a greater level of definition.

if you were in another legion, you may say you're in the 10th Squad, of the 3rd Company, 5th Chapter, of the 12th Legion, 372nd Expeditionary Fleet, in the Drowned, they'd call it Psalida-[Hebrew Number], Shoal [sardar-name, Single Digit Hebrew Number, Single Digit Hebrew Number], under Shoalmaster [shoalmaster name]. So, Psalida-Aleph, Shoal Skerro-Bet-Zayin, under Shoalmaster Renno. So, 1st Tendril/Chapter, 27th Squad (Sergeant Skerro), Commanded by Captain Renno. Any names like Sorrowsworn, Redtyde, or Tidemaker are merely appropriations under Styxian nomenclature, and is as much as title as it is a first name. Surnames, or last names aren't really much of a thing among Styxians, instead they are given numbers and a first name when they are raised in the orphanages from which much of the legion drew its initial number of recruits from. Think of basically an Labour-concentration camp, but for children, where names were removed, and they were given a tattoo with which to identify themselves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_numerals For help with numbers.

Sorry if this makes it hard, but the nature of the legion was that it was initially so fractured across all of the legiones astartes anyway that they could either adopt on the fly from their brother legions that they were assigned to, or have developed their own, either as a hybrid, or entirely seperate one, so there's scope for all sorts as appropriate. Morro really didn't give that much of an interest in it; in his eyes, he saw the legion as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and didn't interfere, and let the subordinates work out the bureaucratic/organisational mess that was the Drowned Legion's internal architecture. He told them what he wanted, it was down to Hennasohn, and later Boraeo to sort out who went where.

Sorry, I meant where you're getting most of your inspiration for their look from. I was in between long car journeys. I like those ideas for Skerro's look.

At the moment, my mental image of them is pretty much this, but in power armour and with shotels.

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/images/9/9b/Matt_Olson_V_Greyjoy.jpg

It's a complex system, but interesting. And suitably grim.

Also, at what point does Morro have his tentacles fitted? Because if it's before the Qarith Triumph, that's gonna cause serious problems with Pionus.

I've started to imagine Hennasohn as having the face of Nick Cave, for reasons best known to my subconscious.

  • 2 weeks later...

Oh dear, Hennasohn's got the rough end of falling out of the ugly tree then. If I'm honest, my initial thought of his appearance was as Ardeth Bey out of the Mummy Series (apologies, bit of an image dump)

http://www.alicia-logic.com/capsimages/my_096TheMummy.jpg

That, and a cross with Old Man Henderson, although that side's slowly being phased out. I'm hoping to flesh him out a bit more, and make the influence behind his disgrace being as a result of that. Maybe a bit of Opie from Sons of Anarchy (especially the longer beard so that it covers his throat) but a bit more old looking, kind of Al Pacino looking;

Actually, Aeron Damphair from Game of Thrones is pretty much a spot on fit, if he was 800Lbs of Transhuman Killing Machine capable of telekinetical artillery and controlling swords with his mind.

However, slight confession. I've never read The Island of Doctor Moreau, by HG Wells. I found his writing partly evocative, but not gripping, and I couldn't fit myself into the story after War of the Worlds, so never read more than that single book. Until this week. As part of a 1 Book a Week Challenge, I settled into it. Partly because of the name, and I had it on my shelf.

But in the name of all things unholy and my Lords and Masters Be'lakor and The Dark Prince, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Island_of_Doctor_Moreau Just read that. JUST :cussING READ IT. It's baseline Morro. Coincidink, or just intended Ph'nglui mglw'nafh...?

Morro's tentacles come from the Daemonlarvae Lattice, which is a subdermal implant. Morro can keep it under control enough during the early days that it appears to be little more than an elaborate electoo, when his emotions agitate the larvae. He essentially appears normal, until later in the insurrection, when Dechala (sorry, WHFB favourite of mine) the Denied One takes full control, turning him into Mr Gribbles. I've still not completely ironed out the story, as it originally worked on Leman Russ being around, before he lost his :censored: at Morro, and Mr Cuddles just lost his temper, Gwal cutting off his arm, Morro locating Rakarth, and keeping him on as a pet after fixing his limb, but implanting the lattice. With that timeframe right out the window, I'll have think later tonight.

That image is like my image in my head as well, although one who clearly cares more about symbology and appearance than many of the rest of his contemporary legionaries.

Even this is overmebellished.^ Where there are designs of stuff like Kraken etc, its much more likely to be either simply painted on, maybe with copper leaf (rather than sculpted or shaped). And when I say Copper, it's more like this on the far left, or maybe a rose bronze, if I'm honest. Too many times, copper is shown to be very red, which isn't what I was looking for in the palette.

Morro personality wise is Euron Greyjoy, which having caught up with Game of Thrones basically had me going "that's him, that's him". The Drowned do not like him, but he's the best they've got. But there are some who hate him, and disagree with his methods. Although unlike "Scissor Me Timbers" Yara(Asha)/Theon, he gets won around. Again, having watched Warcraft (actually a rather terrible movie, sorry, I said it), what that guy who wasn't the main good orc guy but like his right hand guy made a mistake, but didn't turn good. I know it's vague I don't want to spoil it for you, but if you know, you know.

I think it was Mikhal who was wondering over his appearance. Morro is essentially the Prince of Persia. I think that honestly the best appearance I can come up with as a description is to use him as the baseline. Linked for size. Obviously Primarch sized.

Morro's influences outside of that;

Helmet;

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/darksiders/images/4/47/Darksiders_II_Wailing-host.jpg

Grey Knights terminator base, vertical slit at the front, Tau Gubbins for the halo? His colours match those of his Astartes. I'm not sold on any of the armours, really. I think that Leman Russ' early sculpt is more appropriate.

Drowned Colours; Teal Green/Blue colour - RGB 49/132/155 // Hex Code 27849B for the main, an almost pearlescent Rose Bronze/Copper colour, and an offwhite/cloudy grey as if those of a blind person for the eyes, and gems. No verdigris or patina; this is indicative of poor care, however, and even if on a decorative piece of kit created by the bearer, it must be perfectly cleaned back to lustre.

As a note about Absalom; Absalom in history/bible lore was a character who assassinated a rival after acting as a befriender, and inciting the populace against the ruler, before rebelling, and losing. I'm not being funny, it's actually kind of scary how much cultural osmosis is actually applicable - Corruption from Darksiders was only originally in place as a character design.

I think Morro should have a name before he gained the name/title "Sorrowsworn" and given the name Morro at birth - in this case, it was Absalom. It can be a name that Be'lakor calls to him to gain his trust, despite him never making that name known to anyone.

I think I've done enough damage to everyone's bandwidth for now!

The more outlandish embellishments can always wait until late in the Insurrection.

I'm just gonna have to take the rest in and work out how it'll play in the stories I have planned. I'm thinking I'll try and do one with the final assault on Qarith Prime. On which note, how does Morro behave when it comes to leading his warriors?

Haha cool. When Morro is Euron. Gwal is kinda Jon Snow^^

By the way: Morros Helm looks exactly like Gwals Mask, only enclosed. Which means, that I have a fitting helm for Morro^^

Just... he's cool book Euron, right? Not TV show Euron.

Btw, I'm not entirely certain from your post earlier whether I should get Dr Moreau on my Kindle. Should I?

Okay, how does everyone feel about this plan of action for the Drowned;

  • Astartes Created by the Emperor
  • XVIth Legion Created in the Levant
  • First Operation sees them flood the previous dammed Mediterrean Bone Yard, and then fighting amongst the sunken ruins/protected habitats, get the reputation and cognomen "The Drowned Men"
  • Conquest of Sol System, Fighting on Neptune requires the experience and practise of the Drowned's campaign against the subhumans there after heavy casualties to other legions
  • Legion is fractured by Hennasohn, creates the Pelagic Monarchs which rule over the detachments with equal authority to the host fleet commander. Legion learns traits and skills from others
  • The Drowned begin to lose their niche and falls behind in resources and influence as more Primarchs are discovered, and Pionus' discovery requests the aid of the Drowned to teach his legion how best to operate. Although close friendship between the legions, the legion itself begins to lose out on requests for combat and gets pushed back as its niche is less requested compared to a Primarch lead legion.
  • 10th Discovered Primarch is Morro. Russ is outraged at Morro enslaving the human populace and selling them to the Eldar, and attacks, only calmed by Icarion.
  • Morro is happy to leave the legion under the control of Hennasohn for the most part, unchanged. Hennasohn doesn't like the responsibility, that he didn't want in the first place and argues for Morro to do his job to bring the legion back into preeminence. This continues for many years, but finally having enough of his subordinates complaints splits the legion even further, and sends Hennasohn to take command of the detachment assigned to another quandrant to operate within.
  • One notable campaign is the first cleansing of Molech, when Pionus, and Icarion work fight alongside the Drowned together.
  • Morro continues the legions operations within his own quarter, but begins to draw together the Drowned, rather than keep the current practise of spreading the legio amongst the expeditionary fleets. It is during this time when he re-encounters Urien Rakarth, and is able to imprison him. In secret, he requests modifications to his personal self, to make him more akin to the best of the other Primarchs. It is here when he begins to take those who are dying, but unable to survive internment in a Dreadnought Sarcophagi, and send them to Rakarth to become the Forlorn. These do not fight yet. Russ has closely followed the actions of Morro and the legion, and he cannot afford to have them see what's going on.
  • Hennasohn takes to fighting alongside Warriors of Light, acting as Pathfinders, discovering the Mechanicum Abyssii.
  • The Abyssii inflict heavy casualties, while Hennasohn continues to try and prove the worth of the legion outside of their niche. They suffer huge casualties and are forced to retreat to back to the Warriors of Light main fleet, drawing the Abyssii on, where a stalemate is fought, with Gwalchavad able to beat Morterra.
  • Morro hearing of the losses to his legion rushes over as soon as he can do. A huge amount of the Legion has suffered casualties, including a great many ships. When Morro arrives, there are many others already present, including Russ, although he should have been prosecuting a campaign on the other side of the galaxy, and too busy to attend here.
  • The Emperor has attended the meet with Morterra, to smooth over talks with the Mechanicum, and to bring them into the fold of the Imperium. Morro cares little for it, and goes to see Hennasohn, where he bumps into Russ. Hearing his brothers words about needing to make bridges, the two play a wargame. Morro cheats, stating that there's little point in playing by the rules when the enemy cheats, you have to do everything you can to win. This escalates into an argument, and Russ strikes Morro. Morro, empowered and sped up by the early implementation of the (as-yet unknown Daemonic Grafts) fights back. When Gwal and von Salim (with others) mostly defuse the argument, Morro attempts to strike back at Morro, but Gwal cuts off his arm to prevent further damage.
  • Morro retreats, and goes into the infra-galactia-planum (sub-galactic plane), where he's more used to operating. There, he begins to rebuild his legion, and also has his arm rebuilt bigger and stronger by Rakarth, and has the Daemonlarvae Lattice implanted. He's now far tougher and faster, as well as having his tentacle whips. This implantation is as a result of Slaanesh's bargain with Be'lakor, who has discovered Morro during the invasion of Molech.
  • The legion is rebuilt by Morro and using "technology" and stolen powers from Chaos provided through Rakarth and his assistants to vastly speed up the implantation process.
  • During this period, Russ and Magnus go missing.
  • The call for Nikaea goes out - Morro obviously cannot attend, but orders Boræo and Hennasohn to take his place, giving Morro one of his blades.
  • It is at this time when the primarchs are debating (and despite having already put across the view of their Primarch, the two legionaries are banned from the discussions as they are not Primarchs), that hennasohn steps into the duel area. His opponent, to be decided attacks him, and Hennasohn decides to use his Psychic Powers to defeat his opponent, again spelling out the point that cheating wins, and playing by the rules is not honourable. he actually quotes Javik, here. "You stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead, and yet you still cling to honour?". This signifies bad blood between the various Legions which were closely allied with the Vlka Fenryka, who blame the Drowned, and Morro for the disappearance, especially as he has not shown his face.
  • Morro, disgusted with the events at Nikaea stays hidden, rather than returning to the Imperium. However, he recieves a call for help in his soul (the one which he now shares with N'Kari) to Molech, and it's actually Be'lakor calling, and has an Ork Waaagh directed to the planet, thanks to the interference of Chaos. Morro assembles his force, and attacks Molech, defeating them, discovering Be'lakor, who he calls a Daeva, or Angel. The Angel shows him the truth, what happened to Russ/Magnus, an alternative timeline (which is a throwback to the canonverse through symbology, showing a Blacksmith with hands of gleaming metal, A Dragon sheathed in flame, and angel weeping tears of blood, a hunter on a cloud, casting down bolts of lightning from his bow etc). he was the one who taught the Emperor the secrets of how to control the warp, and that the Emperor used the Warp to create the Astartes, and in return, was imprisoned by the young Emperor.
  • Embarrassed at the hypocrisy of his father, he vows to release the Angel from the imprisonment, and annihilates the planet. Now able to physically leave the pocket dimension into real space, Be'lakor assists Morro, when a messenger arrives from the Lightning Bearers, requesting the aid with the destruction of the Qarith.
  • During the warfighting against the Qarith, Morro only rarely takes to battle, and when he does so, he does it either alone, or on his own vessel, and not around allied forces. Be'lakor stays hidden (or engages the Qarith when among their ships).
  • He encounters Pionus after the fighting. Pionus can sense a difference amongst his brother, but puts it down to the nearly 50 years of seclusion. Morro wishes he could say more, but realises that the bond of friendship is already broken as he cannot readily admit to the revelations of the Angel to his brother.
  • He continues quickly on with the campaign, ignoring the hand of friendship offered by von Salim. Only Pionus and Icarion see him off.
  • Prior to the Insurrection, Icarion seeks out Morro once more, recognising Morro's broken-ness, and recommended by the gods and Travier, brings him on board to the coming war. Icarion directs him at Pionus, and sets up an ambush so as to draw the Scions Hospitaller into the conflict, where they'd assemble at Untara Prime. It would be here that the Drowned's first opening attacks at large of the Insurrection would take place, ripping through the Scions assembled forces, and fending off the reserve attacks, while Morro went in with the "beak" of the assault, to kill Pionus. Pionus is only able to escape thanks to the sacrifice of his bodyguard and most of his remaining ground forces.

Seperate post, to address @bluntblade's post; not really, but I'm not a fan. I don't think that there's much purpose to reading it unless you are a fan of HG Well's. I don't think he's a must read and find him hard to settle into, and prefer Orwellian Animal Farm/1984 style as a social commentary. That said, if you do want to read it, remember that it's always available on Gutenberg Project. That site is incredible, and something I need to make more of a habit to check for new books.

Aside that you refer to the WARDENS OF LIGHT as Warriors of Light, I like your outline. Remwber to throw in that the wound inflicted by Gwals Blade Grandfather can't heal as the flesh on the cut ages to fast ( great hrud technology -> thx Daer'dd)

You sure that you want to share Morros Soul with N'Kari? I mean he is probably the strongest deamon in service of Slaaneesh and if i go by the old chaos codex he and the khorne guu whose name I forgot ( hellbrute) even surpass a primarch. Maybe settle for a lesser greater daemon of slaanesh? A succubus or so.
