It seems my XVth legion project is a go, and damn the wallet :P I plan to make a shooty/psyker Thousand Sons list with some dreadclaws, Deredeos, and maybe a fire raptor or storm eagle. Hell, even the new stormbird when it comes out. My inspiration for this comes from the chapter in McNeill's ATS where the XVth legion descends to the surface of a planet with a psyker communion guiding the Stormbirds through AA fire.

 

I plan to make my praetor in a similar fashion to the above painter, however, he will have a Khopesh, and his helmet will be the one mkIV variant "Snout" helm.

 

Can anyone recommend how I should make the helmet crests similar to the above master class painter? Should I use green stuff or plasticard? Or both?

Which helmet crests are you talking about? The ones on the regular legionaries or the sergeant's? For the sergeant's I'd use plastic-card to get the basic shape and then add the detail afterwards with greenstuff. With the regular legionaries I'd just go straight for the greenstuff.

 

 

 

Ps. kudos for tackling an 'unreleased' Legion. Once they get their time in the sun and some FW love, I'm sure there'll be plenty of people hopping straight on the bandwagon (me included, probably :P ), but you'll have a head start on everyone :)

Awesome, can't wait to see what you do. For the sgt I think you need to use plasticard as a base to make the crest will be easier then using gs.

It means a lot coming from you man. I haven't made any yet, so don't jump the gun too soon :D my orders will likely start ramping up once I figure out the color scheme and write up a list.

 

I plan for that Sokar Stormbird to be in the list though...

Yeah I was wondering about that modeler's choice of conversion tools for the mkIV Sorcerer with the Heqa staff. I think it looks too cool not to do, and mirrors the artwork really well. As for the basic grunts, I don't want helmet crests, but I do like the little green stuffed signs the guy did, so I might do those or the little "forks" at the top of the nose as seen in older artwork.

 

I've always wanted to leave my flair on a project, so what better way than to tackle another undone legion!!!

Thanks again for all the support guys! I won't be able to update the models for at least a week depending on how soon my order arrives. As for painting the models, I was thinking that Mephiston red over a Khorne red would work as it was something simile I tried with Flesh tearers. I might see about getting an airbrush to help. The red is much lighter though than the Flesh tearers, and I plan to do a gold trim rather than the white of the above painter.

 

What do people think about white sand as a base for these guys?

 

 

Edit: here were my flesh tearers I had had done a while back, I think this red is somewhere to start from, but it's nowhere near as smooth as the other guy's.

This picture of the standard bearer is literally the second coolest artwork I've seen for the Thousand Sons besides that Khopesh armed assault squad. I wanted to make a 4 man command squad in terminator armor to accompany my Sorcerer in a dreadclaws but I forgot they can't do that unless he has terminator armor on. Rats :(

 

But I'm going to make a command squad based upon the above artwork as a guide.

I've always wanted to make a plasma spam squad of death, and this artwork gives me full license to do so. Sweet sweet beautiful plasma.

 

I'm going to make a squad of these guys mounted in a Land Raider proteus :)

 

Does anyone else think I should use the ultramarine praetor helmets and just make the little "fork" at the front of the helm out of green stuff?

Here's another piece of art with the Khopesh armed assault squads....I have a feeling that FW might make them a unique unit for the XVth legion ;)

 

So, being the hipster I am, I will make an assault squad largely armed with these weapons. But if I've learned anything from Martin Luther...its to sin boldly :devil:

 

Oh yeah, I mean a 20 man squad of mkII assault marines. Prepare your butt, meta.

Finally, here's my 2000 point list I've been brainstorming. I won't go into details yet, but I have a majority of the units picked out:

-4 command squad members, with Libby in a dreadclaw

 

-20 assault marines

 

-20 tactical marines

 

-5 plasma support marines in a LR Proteus

 

-Sicaran Venator "The Sand Serpent"

Yeah, I used one of the Emperor's Children 'Phoenician' helmets on my last XV Legion Sorcerer. I has fairly pleased with how it turned out.

If you're going to make those little tuning fork helm decorations out of greenstuff, I'd strongly suggest sculpting them on a flat surface and then gluing them once the putty has cured. If you're planning on doing that with all of your minis, I would say make a master (maybe from plastic or metal?) and make a press mold for it so you can just stamp out a bunch of new ones whenever you need more.

Also, just so you know, Libbies can only go to ML2 if you're using the 'Lega' 30k Rules. FAQ and all that.

 

Everything else is fair enough. As a fellow of the "IMMA JUMP ON THIS SHIP WHEN WE GET DEM RULES", I look forward to how this force shapes up.

I think my gaming group is allowing for liberties to be taken for not yet done legions. As for my sgts, I gave them the 15 point burning lore upgrade to mimic ML1 for the moment.

You know with very little GS work those ultimas on the Ultramarine chests could easily be made into scarabs.... Just a thought.

Sadly I'm not a rocket surgeon :( but dang those things look pretty easy to make scarabs...even for my amateurish GS skills.

 

The EC helmets yeah, but don't you feel the UM ones are closer? I feel that the artwork portrays them with more squarish eyepieces.

The helmet on the far left from Maxmini.eu is pretty close to some of the Thousand Sons helmets during the Heresy-era. Having spoken with the proprietor in the past he seemed open to selling x amount of whichever helmet you're after if you get a hold of him via email.

Yeah there were some really good ones hidden on the wiki. That one, the plasma guys, and the first assault marines were the coolest IMHO.

 

FW has actually stayed eerily true to the artwork.

Yeah I went through there and saw some really nice conversions and ideas. I particularly liked the way he did his vehicles.

 

 

I think my project will be a part away from the rest because I'm not a huge fan of heavy conversions (some exceptions apply). I do want them to look more like a legion rather than 40k thousand sons painted red :P

 

A subtle hint with a loincloth, a helmet tuning "fork", or a robe is all I need. I find it has the greatest visual impact :)

 

Once I get paid on Monday, I'm going to make a larger order and patronize some third party bits dealers.

I would humbly suggest you take a peek at scibor miniatures and in the heads weapons and shield section.

 

They hae some good looking "Egyptian" stuff in there which might be of some use to you.
