Hydras WIP thread -XIX Legion

Hey good folks of the B&C, I have long been jumping around armies for the last few years, never really settling on anything. I hoping that will now change with the start of this new army, a Heresy era Death Guard army. I'm hopefull this will stick, I've painted a few different test models, I've given it a month cooling off period, and no desire to change focus. Fingers crossed then.

Don't want to bore you all with lots of text but a quick out line of my vision. Squads of Terminators and Contemptors, backed up by tanks and artillery, bringing their unique blend of stoic footslogging and chemical warfare to a battlefield in off white and green. In the future I would like to expand on the army, add Breachers, tactical squads, destroyers, maybe ever delve into the chaosy side of things.

To start with, as I like building characters, the Praetor. I wanted him to really push the 'walking tank' look of Terminator Armour. I also wanted him to feel like a battlefield commander, an individual that's in command of thousands of marines, which is why I've stayed away from heroic and action poses. Built into his left wrist is a combi flammer, the tubing is to represent the chem munition upgrade. I based the Chen flammer on that of the Calas Typhon model, only tried to make it smaller. There is no where for ammo to go on the bolter side which slightly annoys me, as I decided to build somewhere for empty cases to eject feeling this was a more important detail, and that the ammo could be loaded internally. Let me know what you think on him. Looking at the pics I see I need to do a little more work on some areas which I'll straighten out before I undercoat.

On my desk I have 5 Deathshroud almost ready for painting. I really want to take the squad up to a fluffy 7 so I may hold off for now, especially as the quality of some of the scythes are poor.

The fact that I was thrashing out to Bloodsport's To The Death when I first saw this was just icing on the cake, lol.

Awesome work so far, man. I'm really looking forward to seeing some paint on this beast.

Thanks guys, I've tidied up the worst gs offenders and undercoated just before the rain hit. I think I can get away with some gs roughness, it gives the impression that the armour is cracked and warped on the top which I think suits the Death Guard.

Cheers fellas. Brother-Captain Arkhan thanks a lot, I've really been trying to improve my GS ability, I still working on getting smooth finishes first time. The best thing I think I've developed is patients, which will hopefully help me stick with this army.

So a bit of painting done, armour, and oil wash. My test models have had a lot heavier washes, I didn't want to go so heavy this time, although I purposely overloaded the bottom of the legs. Tomorrow I plan to highlight the armour and get the greens and metals done, then it's down to weathering :D

Thanks ThtsTheJoke.

A little update on the Praetor. There are a few areas I'm not happy with, the belt area in particular. I have to quite figured out the sword. I feel something to fancy wouldn't suit the model and would distract. Not sure on colour for the eyes either, but that's a small detail at the moment. Thoughts?

Awesome Praetor, bro! Really nice conversion, greenstuff, and paint work. You've made a really unique character.

Fingers crossed that you remain motivated to continue with the Death Guard. They're an awesome Legion :)

Long time no update. In fact I started and dropped several other legions, wasting money and generally feeling a bit lost. I've left things for a while to try and find something I wanted to work on and I've been playing with an idea for a while, campaign hardened veterans, sporting bionics and battle damage, personalisation to armour, carrying all the gear for a protracted campaign. Now I could do this with any legion and I've been painting a few tests models (and a primarch) and I realised I really enjoyed the weathering I did on the Death Guard, although I do think I went a bit OTT with some of it.

Anyway onto models, starting with a veteran Sgt

I went with a power axe and combi flamer, with chem munitions of course. I have enough legs and torsos to build another 9, but I might build a few paint them, build a few more, etc.

Long time no post. I've decided just to make this a general WIP place, cos I just tend to work on small projects. Might keep my inq stuff desperate though.

Anyway, built this guy over the last few days, was trying to make a model that was trasitioninng from ranged to close combat, I'm a little disappointed with how he came out but don't think there's much I can do. He became a Night Lord cos I found the terror helm and went with it. I think it works though, I see the Night Lords as eager to get into close combat after firing a few shots to throw the enemy off.

Possibly a good thing no comments, the model was bugging me, just wasn't what I invisioned. So when I got home I reworked, I'm much happier now. He's no longer a Night Lord though....

I've had a few ideas today, tempted by the Heresy Knight Errants, I came up with a concept, an attempted recruitment of one of the exiled XIX legion by the Malcador. Thinking a small task force for Raven Gaurd, hard hitting, mobile, led by a Knignt Errant.
