2500 Shattered Legion, First List

I have been thinking about doing a Shattered Legion as 1 Army, but choosing fluffy sounding options and painting them as the Legions they represent. I haven't bought anything yet, but don't want to waste money on units that I won't like or aren't worth fielding.

How it works / what legions.

 

Obviously Vulcan and the Firedrakes go in the Spartan. General Idea is to charge up the center and multi-charge everything in reach. (I am thinking about using Firedrakes and Gorgon Terminator models. I also really like the Medusan Immortal Shields.)

 

The Legion Centurion Vigilator has Scoutand Stealth (plus Sabotage). He will be my Raven Guard. He is then attached to the Veterans.  Scouting forward or Outflanking and obliterating a unit hopefully. Then they put Nails in Coffins (in Theory). They can pick a USR depending on what my oppenent brings for versatility. However, I was thinking that Sniper better represents Raven Guard and effectively gives them Rend. Also in the Books most of the SM on SM Deaths tend to be Eye Lens Shots (haha). Attach Apothecary here. Also could be replaced with a Tactical or Assault squad for similar effects. (I am thinking about using MK6 Beakies as Raven Guard, the above Immortals and a Salamander as the Heavy Flamer.)

 

The Rapier Weapons Battery is all Thud Guns to help with vehicles or infantry. The Barrage could screw me if the first shot misses. Not sure if each gun fires independently or all off the first shot (when firing Frag). Also the Shatter shells are S8, but only AP4. However, they do have Sunder.

The Graviton Cannons aren't damaging, but the permanent Dangerous Terrain could be very useful. Plus, Large Blast can cover a lot of area and models. Also if the first shot misses the second is independent instead of the being linked like the Barrage of the Thud Guns. 

Option to replace them with a Heavy Weapon Team for more points. Also might add a Seige Breaker for Tank Hunter not sure if he is worth the points. These will be representing my Iron Hands. (Could be another Damaging Unit as well.)

Deredeo, because Doritos. 

The Venator is really good at shutting down and tearing up other tanks. This could also be replaced with a Fire Raptor Gunship or a second Deredeo.

 

I'm not sure what else to add or replace. However, I know that I want them to represent a Shattered Legion Remnant that escaped the Istvaan V Massacre. I know that currently in the HH books that Vulcan was +++REDACTED+++. Then he catches a ride on the next Salamander ship in Astropathic Range. Like most of their ships they have survivors from the other legions.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Firstly, love your avatar.

 

Secondly, love the concept - running it as pure Salamanders is one way I'd never considered. Vulkan's actually missing from that list, but whatevs. You could also run "Covenant of Fire" instead of PotL, as it allows Allies, and Raven Guard/Salamanders are Sworn Brothers.

 

Deredeo and Rapiers are very good - I'd definitely paint them up as Iron Hands. You could swap the Quad Mortars for Graviton Cannons, giving you anti-Spartan weapons (models are in Mark III armour too, which suit the Iron Hands). Siege Breaker is not bad, as he can be a compulsory HQ, but Tank Hunters is the same as the shatter shells' Sunder.

 

If you drop the Vets to 8 models, they (and the Apothecary & Vigilator) can take a Rhino and Scout 12" without needing to downgrade to a 4+ on the Vigilator. Then he can take Artificer Armour. Otherwise, definitely give him a refractor field or something.

 

What in the list do you definitely want to run? Oh, and be careful with story spoilers casually thrown in there, as some people might not have read everything to date.

Somehow my Vulcan got chopped off when I copied it over. (fixed)

The main reason I didn't run an ally is so that I don't have to have 3 Troops. With Pride it lets me fill the 2 slots and not actually take a troop. It seems kind of unfair, but since it is in the main book I'm running with it. 

Is there a Iron Hands specific kit for the Deredeo? Either way I think that it should be IH like you suggested.

I was wondering about the Graviton Cannons. It looks good against Heavy Vehicles and creates permanent Dangerous Terrain. However, on paper it looks crappy against troops, unless the Dangerous Terrain makes up for it. S4 SM would only be wounded on a 5 or 6 and have full saves. What about 2 units of 2 Artillery (whichever we go with).

I had misunderstood Sunder. So the Siege Breaker is out for now. (Is Sunder new to HH? Since it isn't in the RB.)

I didn't even think about reducing the Vet Squad since all the other Squads come minimum 10. I guess I got stuck on that idea. (I'll have to toy with that.) Thanks.

Is a 12" Scout better than the threat of Infiltrating anywhere after my opponent sets up? I agree that 2+ is better than 4+, but since he won't be standing in front of the unit, it isn't that big of a deal. What about giving him a Refractor Field and a Dragon Scale Storm Shield? 

Definitely want to run in the list:
Vulcan, Fire Drakes in the Spartan. (this unit can be reduced in size)
Scouty unit to represent my Raven Guard. (The Vigilator seems to be able to do this to any unit)

The Iron Hands element is more flexible. (Ranged, Vehicles, and/or Anti Tank/Air)

Yeah, needing 3 Troops is sometimes problematic. You've probably gone the smart route. And with a massive unit of tough-as-nails Firedrakes like that, you're unlikely to ever suffer from the "Pride of the Legion" penalty. If you need points elsewhere, you can easily afford to reduce the squad size, though I'd go with thunder hammers over chainfists (purely because the models won't require converting). Taking half of them as "normal" Cataphractii is a great idea actually - just keep the storm shields at the front.

No Iron Hands Deredeo - there's Legion specific Contemptors though. And most Rapiers are awesome (quad heavy bolters are questionable), so whatever you want will be fine. "Sunder" is a Forgeworld rule - exactly the same as Tank Hunters but it is on weapons.

 

The Vigilator & Vets as you had them will work well - Infiltrate & a 6" Scout move is better than a 12" Scout move. Definitely take that storm shield though, and utilise cover as he'll grant the unit Stealth. Maybe look at heavy flamers instead of plasma guns, as Sniper on S6 templates is amazing.

 

With the leftover points, I would seriously consider a stock Sicaran Venator, as you may face super-heavies at this points level. Venators shut down tanks and super-heavies like nobody's business!

What about dropping the Storm Shield on the Vigilator  for more Offense.

Such as giving Volkite Serpentas to the Vig and his SGT or Artificer Weapons for them. 

I'm not sure if his survival is better than increasing their damage output. 

That is effectively 3 more attacks or 2 more shots with S5 and Deflagerate.

The Vigilator has pretty good shooting already with his Special Issue Ammo. I'd drop his melta bombs (as 10 Vets with them should do fine) and drop the Firedrakes heavy flamer. This will pay for artificer armour and an augury scanner on the Apothecary, helping keep him alive and granting pseudo-Interceptor & anti-Infiltration defence.

 

Cheap master-crafting of weapons is awesome, but I reckon you have the list pretty sorted.

 

Another thing - Vulkan will often be better splitting off from the Firedrakes after they disembark (T7, ridiculous defences, immunity to plasma) as majority Toughness will cause him problems. Obviously this depends on what your opponent has (lascannon heavy support will still hurt).

I didn't realize that the Apothecary could get a Augury Scanner. That could be useful against troops. 

I had heard that after jumping out of the Spartan that it was usually a good idea to split your Primarch off and let him do his thing solo, but still in close proximity to his Body Guards. 

Is 2+ worth giving to the Apothecary since he only has 1 attack and wound? I figured he would just hang out and not get wound allocated to him, to ensure he doesn't die.

The Apothecary is there to keep a pricey unit alive, so keeping him alive is important. It's more to help against Precision Shots/Strikes or lucky Barrage hits, which may or may not be an issue.

 

Now that you've taken on my advice, make sure you analyse it critically in case I've persuaded you to do something you're not sure about! :)

The guys at The Eye of Horus Podcast pointed our that in the Games Workshop Errata 1.1 it added "and vice versa" to IC and units with or without Infiltrate.

 

That means I can either go with the previously suggest reduction in size and scout 12" Rhino or they can Outflank Reserve from his Scout rule.

 

On the positive side he can get Artificer Armor now.

I knew this and was gonna email the Eye of Horus boys about it, yet I still forgot about it when I was looking at your list! :/ I'd swap the Dragonscale storm shield for artificer armour.

 

And yes, it makes it a simpler choice. Playtest both options so you can see how they go!
