A Tale of 18 Hobbyists

Another brief update.... Had a crack at trying out coloured metals. To represent the blades being forged in the Ice of Fenris.

Was a third attempt and I am reasonably happy. The 3 big learning points for me were that:

1. it is much harder to do this effect on axes than swords.

2. It is much harder to pull off at small scale compared to large scale.

3. It is pretty time consuming doing it by hand.

Also the facing of the axe dictated where the light and dark would fall which made things pretty tricky to gauge. Hopefully it looks alright... These are still messy and a work in progress.

I think it needs a touch oh mithril silver on the tips and also where the cutting edge meets the face for a bit more definition.

However a new conundrum has arisen:

What to do with the centre sections of the axes? I was thinking a black metal look, but not sure. I do not want to do the centre sections in gold, I may reserve that for the swirlies... Any ideas??

Oh when I meant large scale sword I was harking back to the ETL model I did.

Thoughts and ideas most welcome at this point :)

I do it back to front :) Start with the bright silver and work my way towards the dark end.

I keep trying going from dark to light, but it never works!!

Anyhoo any idea what to do with the middle of the axe heads?

I am considering going for a very dark metal, almost black, but not sure how it will look unsure.png

I've gotten pretty much nothing done. I've been battling a bit of depression for the past week or so, and am not likely going to have the motivation to do anything. Honestly, I'm probably gonna have to sell a lot of my stuff soon, and truth be told, 30k is my most disposable right now, since I don't know anyone who regularly plays 30k. It really saddens me, as I really wanted to get Theta-Four Cerberus off the ground finally, after years of being in my head.

We'll see how the rest of the month pans out, but Fall is not proving to be a good season for me so far...

The rest of the 18 are behind you. Begin it, I suffer terrible with depression and other associated gubbins also and I know that it can be a struggle. But if you have been wanting to do it get it begun. I bought my stormblade to help get me out of my rut and it was so incredibly rewarding. I hope to see your project soon in these hallowed halls and all of us are here to support each other through the little challenge and in general. And there's still half a month to go that's loads of time :D

Larkyn I find doing something physical like a long walk/hike can help a lot if I hit a low point. It helps me reset my brain and get things in order when things seem a bit too much. Finding something that helps break they cycle is really important. Sometimes talking helps as well so send me a PM if you need a vent.

Thanks guys, any support is nice. Something that I thought of is that maybe I just need to move away from power armor. Like this massive Dark Eldar army I've got sitting here since they were released (5th Ed codex). I'd hate to sell that off though, so I'd likely have to sell my Imperial Guard, and probably my Fantasy stuff, since Age of Sigmar is...well...dumb.

I will try and get my Alphas partially done. I do have some guys started already. We'll see how it goes.

Larkyn, sorry to hear about your troubles. Depression is a bugger of a thing to have to deal with.

Take care of yourself the figures can wait and so can we... .

Brief update. Refined the blades.

The Mark 2 marine in the centre, lunging forward, that is your Wolf "The Psycho". Got a name for him yet??

Well guys sorry I haven't been as active I've got to wait a month for my next surgical consult so I'm trying to limit my hobby time.

So I'm still around I'm just more or less in the shadows. Keep it coming and im impressed already with what we have produced.

Still missing some hobbyists but it's only half way through the month

Kurama ... Sounds like we need to jump on the chance of catching you up. You've been a bit of a speed painting daemon of late. Make sure you don't give into temptation and do damage to your wrists any more than they have been.

Zujara ... Liking the look of that tank. It's really starting to have a real presence to it now. :tu:

I've ended up getting stuck into household jobs that need doing before the cold weather hits. Just seen the list the wife has for me. Hoping I get a bit of a breather to finish the current model I'm working on before the end of the month. I'm happy with the red. Just need to add some pads. Thinking of linking her with her mentor by doing cream shoulder pads again. Not sure what colour wax seals should be on a red model though. Maybe just a lighter red or pink or go with something completely different like a blue of green?

Yep.

Skjara Redwolf, the Blóðugr Valdr, stands with his brothers of the Rout. For Russ and the Einherjar!

Like I said before, everyone's stuff looks really good. I, however, suck at remembering to take PIP pictures. I'll probably finish my Lord next week, so that's something.

So most of the way through the second month and I am about half way on my first months vow dry.png

Quick question for all my Brothers out there. The scheme I am working on is a halved green and metal pattern. But when I get to the vehicles (Rhino) I am stuck wondering to go with halved here (could make the metal look a bit... off...) or go just green with metallic accents (not sure it would suit the rest of the army). Thoughts?

Oh and I will get a WIP shot up later.... hopefully...tongue.png

Brother SP.

What is your company's colour. Use that as the main colour and use the haled scheme on the doors and hatches etc.

Or go with black tanks with the green/silver having accents. A black rhino would at least look cool and fit in with the chaplain if he rides in it too

Maybe they are fighting on a night world and as there are  no opportunities to reinforce and re-arm, theyhave been forced to repaint the vehicles predominantly black to increase their survivability. The steel armour kept glinting in the moonlight giving away positions and tanks kept getting popped.

The dark colour helped mitigate the issue, but the chapter heraldry was kept in key areas, so as not t anger the machine spirits :)

Finding it hard to get the right angle and encompass as much of the model as I can to show everything off without multiple pictures. I might rebase him on something flat and add stuff to the base as opposed to using the dread base. Been getting really frustrated hobbywise this month so I'm glad I've got him so far.

@helter, he's looking great so far (the Frustration looks to be paying for itself though)

hard to take one solid pic of something that big and still keep detail, you may want to stop him from trimming your pot plant though tongue.png ...laugh.png

no pics from me, 8 sets of skitarii legs on bases getting painted white isn't much to look at yet happy.png will post a pic of finished legs instead biggrin.png
