Skitarii or Cult for phosphor

Phosphor seems like an awesome weapon and I'm hoping to use the effect to help my Templar get successful charges off.

From my limited understanding, Dunewalkers (and Skitarii as a whole) requires less point investment as everything is cheaper. The main drawback from what I can tell is nothing is ObSec.

Robots are more durable and potentially more shooty but require a lot more points to cover the other required allied detachment.

Thoughts on either the Dunewalkers and Kastelans or the two factions would be much appreciated!

Kataphrons have a phospher side arm and the bare minimum would be about 435 points or something close to that. You'd get anti tank and for alittle more really good AA. You'd also have great AP 2 weapons

Skit msu vanguard units with phos pistol are only 60 points a pop and also offer great anti infantry and mc with base guns. Range is shorter and no obj secured, but they scount and can be moved up aggressively because they cost nothing. Also a nice screening unit.

Could also take the skitarii walker formation. You'll get phos and some AA and antiblight armor. Only 165 points for the bare minimum. I'd recommend jazzails in this formation because the dragoons won't be able to charge until turn 3 maybe?

So if you want to get rid of big stuff I'd take the kataphrons. If you want to provide alittle more over to your templars and kill lots of little stuff of MCs than skits. If you want cheap AA and fast scoring units walkers.

If you merely want a few phosphor shots in your games you got a couple of choices. I'd do one of the following:

Skitarii: 2 units of 5 Vanguard and 1 Dunecrawler with the heavy phosphor blaster (providing 3 heavy shots of luminagen). This will get the minimum requirement for a skitarii maniple formation - netting about 215 pts. Easy to purchase as you can split one box of Skitarii into two units. Could always arm the alpha of each unit with a phosphor blast pistol for a short range shot.

Alternatively

Cult Mech: 2 x 3 Kataphron Destroyers, get them the side arm phosphor blaster for luminagen. Coming in at 360 pts. Either arm them with heavy plasma culverins or heavy grab-cannons - what ever you need to add flavor to your templars. Also need a HQ in order to suit the formation, which comes at a little over 100 pts, but worth it.

If you are looking at an unbound list I'd go with a group of Kastelan Robots, but the buy in for formations is a bit steep.

This sounds closer to what I had in mind.

Plus, it's not like the Phosphor cannon is a bad weapon on it's own. Seems to be a valid threat to MEQs, bikes, MCs and to a lesser extent FMCs and flyers.

And my understanding of Vanguard is that they're very potent for their point cost.

Vanguard rarely disappoint - expanding each squad to 10 wouldn't hurt the list. Kastelans are indeed better, but they are quite expensive to include, unless you want to go unbound.

Yeah, unless you want to commit to Cult, you are better off with Vanguard and Phosphor Dudecrawlers.

My intention is not to commit to either faction, just have a little fling on the side for something different.
