Starting to see quite a bit of red on the entrants list now, well done everyone! Just as well as we're approaching the deadline for new applicants - that's also the one week marker until Heroes of the Guard ends! Those of us who have yet to complete should keep that in mind ;)

Audemus you've done a good job, don't forget you just need the individual vow background pieces for the full ranks! It can be whatever you want to do about the vow models; about the entire platoon or a single soldier for example :)

I've done it. The line of sanity has been crossed. Gentlemen, and ladies, yours truly has discovered a new way of producing that which is holy unto Him on the Throne:

Mud.

On the 8th of October, be here.

++And I looked at what He showed me: it was Mankind united in holy conflict. I wept, rejoicing in His name! Repent you sinners, one and all; take up arms in His cause and you shall be forgiven much. Look blindly at the foe and show no mercy! Prophet Sotek Dante orating to the penal colony of Perseus XI at the Siege of Heimbach++

Have written a small amount of Fluff for Father Absimil

Hidden Content
Father Absimil

Inducted at an early age Absimil remembers very little from his life before the Adeptus Ministorum. Absimil subscribes to the Theology that the Emperor is a stern judge of the dead that pass through his judgement to the realms beyond. Absimil has been active within the Calixis Sector for nearly a standard Terran Decade, preaching his ideologies to the faithful upon Maccabeus Quintus and is held in high regard by the Regiments of Maccabian Janissaries. His posting to the Vostroyan 55th Infantry Regiment followed the loss of the regiments own Priest Father Janov at the hands of the Venomhand Ork Tribe upon the fields of battle.

Despite being a “Chevek” (off-worlder – mild insult) Father Absimil has quickly intergrated himself within the regiment gaining a grudging respect from the men and offciers for his ability to rouse the Zeal of the troops with his oratory skills. Lately he has taken a great interest into the Treatis Elatii (Vostroyan Sacred text written by the Grey Lady, Saint Nadalya the patron saint of Vostroya) that we was issued upon his arrival with the regiment

A good little read Son, I've updated the entrants list accordingly thumbsup.gif I'm going to aim for getting one of my background pieces up this evening smile.png

Cheers

Not really sure what to write for my Regiment's fluff as it seems to have been already written (using a previously existing regiment)

If it has already been done you can just repost or link to it from this topic for it to count smile.png It'd be nice if you could do a new bit to help expand on your regiment's story but it isn't necessary to count as part of the completion thumbsup.gif

edit: unless you mean it's one that already exists in the fluff, in which case write your own little piece on your particular incarnation. Maybe some details that GW left off? ;)

Its done. Not added character fluff yet, but included regimental fluff for completness.

Presenting Wing Commander Petr Glorious (Call Sign: Oblivion) of the Levalloisian Home Fleet fleet attache to the 7th Life Guards.

gallery_72518_9307_357036.jpg

Background

Wing Commander Petr Glorious is a career naval aviator. He was initially enlisted as a Arvus transport pilot. His first promotion was brought about after a Vendetta Flight WIng attached to the carrier he was serving on was wiped you during a training exercise. He was immediately upgraded to a Vendetta pilot, from there he has piloted Vulture and Marauder aircraft. Aircraft generally don't last too long under Petrs care, having been shot down numerous times in action, the Emperors blessing has always been bestowed upon him and he always returns to the fleet. I attempt to stem the loss of aircraft Petr superiors promoted him to Wing Commander and made him attache to the Life guards to position he has held with well distinction contention for the past 15 years.

Regimental Background

Levallois is a mercury sized planet, with two smaller moons which are inhabited. in the Segmentum Pacificus 12 parsecs from the Forgeworld of Stygies. Human population of the planet is in region of 20 billion according to imperial records, with the population split between to hive cities at the poles. The planet is frequently cut off from the rest of the imperium by warp storms that affect the local area. As a result the planet has become self sufficient in terms of producing and training its military, manufacturing weapons of war and training its telepaths and psykers. The polulace its self has a much higher than average incidence of pyskers in comparison to the imperial normal.
According to pre-imperial records Levallois has had a human colony since the fall of old night, records indicate the populace to be particulary warp sensitive with a above average level psykers present. Levallois was brought under imperial rule during the early part of M31, however exact details of the expeditionary force that liberated the plant has been purged from imperial records. Local myths surrounding the liberation describe the liberation force as red armoured copper skinned Astartes. The Life Guards was founded directly after the liberation, initially prior to imperial rule they were praetorians to a faction ruler (Tsar) from the southern hive. The recruits would swear an oath of loyalty to the ruler giving the life to the Tsar hence the name life guards. With the transition to imperial rule the oaths of loyalty were changed to the emperor and the tradition continued. Further data from regimental history indicates that as a further act of fealty the Life Guards adopted the bright red tunics in homage to the liberating Astartes and the Imperial Army units that arrived alongside them.

During the Horus Hersey planet and regiment remained loyal to the emperor, however as Levallois is on a warp route between Stygies and Terra the planet was of strategic importance to the rebels, and as a result was invaded by forces loyal to the Warmaster. The regiment served valiantly during this time holding the spaceport in the southern hive city for 6 months before relief came in the form of the first legion. Post Hersey the regiment has continued to serve the Imperium with honour on countless war zones. Most notably they were part of 7th army group of the lord commander Solar Macharius crusade, notably they were among forces that brought the planet of Jucha back to the light if the emperor.

As the Life Guards are recruited from a Hive world the combat doctrine of the company has been influenced by their homeworld, as a result the Life Guards are specialise in urban warfare. In addition the regiment do not shy away from heavy use of abhumans and psykers, the regiment actively incorporates them into platoons rather than segregation. This has resulted in the regiment to have a higher proportion of pyskers in its ranks, in comparison to the imperial norm.

Between moving and this and that I completely disappeared back into the fog of war and though I am sure I won't have time to finish this...
BUT as they told me in the schola, the Emperor has no need for my excuses!

Take a step forward,

"I, Warhawk Shizu, of the renown 17th Harakoni Warhawks do hereby vow to complete one Heavy Weapon Support Squad from Imperial Armour Eight: Drop Trooper Regiment for the Regiments of the Bolter and Chainsword's Heroes of the Guard challenge by the 9th of October. I pledge this for the honour of the Harakonia, the Regiment, the B&C and the most glorious Imperium of Mankind. I also pray that the Commissariat shall forgive the poor pic-capture quality."

Excellent completion there baz, I look forward to seeing an equally good model write up too :) Great to see you back on the front lines Shizu, especially coming in on the last day for new entrants! Hope your move went well and you're all settled in ready for war once more. I'm sure you can get these models done in a week :tu: If not, well let's just say the commissariat takes a very dim view of two failed Regiments challenges... ;)

"Varyags strike first!"

- War cry of the 4th Northern Varyags, the Terror Wolves

Hidden Content

4th Northern Varyags

“Never say that a Nordman is a Terran, he’ll smash your face if you do. Never play cards with a Nordman, he’ll cheat you or cut off your fingers if you win. Never talk to a Nordman about honour, he hasn’t got any. Never antagonize a Nordman, unless you want your head on a spike. And if you happen to mention their old kingdom I recommend that you shoot yourself within fifteen seconds.” A colonel in the Imperial Army once used these words to sum up the weeks he spent fighting alongside the Varyags. No one ever doubted he was telling the truth, the Nordmen having gained a dark reputation that stretched back to the Unification Wars.

During the Age of Strife the Nordmen had a kingdom along Terra’s Northern Way from where they launched raids to terrorize other Techno-Barbarian states, becoming feared and hated for their uncontrolled brutality. The Emperor realized that the Nordmen had to be taken out if he was to unify Earth and sent his armies to deal with them; the following war devastated the nation and ended with the public execution of the Northern King, crushing all hope for the North to ever rise again. The surviving Nordmen were forced to accept the Boruzians who had fought in the “pacification” as their new rulers and ended up being treated as second class citizens in their own homeland, now just a collection of bombed out hives. Over time the population along the Northern Way evolved into two castes; the pureblooded and violent lowborn fighting for survival in the hives, and the highborn rulers who were of either foreign or mixed blood. Rebuilding and development in the North was slow, except for the highborn spires, and during the latter years of the Great Crusade several areas were still lagging behind compared to other parts of Terra.

As Unification approached its end, six regiments were raised among the Nordmen to serve as shock troops in the final battles. They were named Armoured Assault Regiments Northern Way, but it was never popular with the proud Nordmen who immediately started calling themselves Northern Varyags in memory of their raiding ancestors and it did not take them long to reawaken Terra’s fear of the name. Only 4th Northern, known as the “Terror Wolves”, survived to become part of the Imperial Army and was assigned to the 743rd Expedition at the beginning of the Crusade, using their expertise at aggressive armoured warfare to swiftly crush opponents of Imperial Truth. In an effort to prevent unnecessary destruction and loss of civilian lives after the massacre on 743-5, the Varyags were ordered to never stay more than a day on newly conquered worlds before being shipped off to the next battlefield, though nothing could be done to contain their brutality once the blood started flowing. To the lowborn it was simply “Northern Justice” meant to punish those defying the Emperor; cities burned to the ground, beheadings were common and hundreds were hanged in the streets or alongside roads with parchments announcing their crimes attached to the bodies. The Varyag officers covered up the soldiers’ excesses by falsifying reports where they claimed that the regiment was suppressing post-compliance insurrections.

Sometime around 835.M30 4th Northern was placed under the command of the 26th Company, VIII Legion who had served as scorched earth specialists since the Unification Wars. The Terran Marines tasked the Varyags with armoured support during ground assaults to compensate for their own lack of tanks, in addition to providing security aboard their flagship the Dusk Queen. Service to the Night Lords, though it was a slightly more honourable faction, darkened the Nordmen’s reputation even further, if such a thing was possible. Scorched earth seemed to suit the Varyags who relished in the fact that they now had official sanction to butcher everything in sight. Whether they were systematically destroying cities or drawing out enemy forces so that the 26th could rain fire upon them, the regiment left behind a trail of blood worthy of their ancestors. The Terror Wolves were still serving the VIII at the outbreak of the Heresy, but no one knows if they followed them into rebellion or remained with the Emperor. Regardless of loyalty, they were most likely wiped out prior to the Siege of Terra.

4th Northern Varyags followed since the beginning the principle of lowborn soldiers commanded by highborn nobility. The Armoured Assault Regiments Northern Way were once made up of ten companies each, but when the 4th became the sole focus of recruitment, it grew to twenty companies organized in five battalions. In 003.M31 the regiment numbered about 3000 soldiers with an unknown amount of heavy armour.

The master of the regiment was the Lord High Chieftain, or “Lord Despot” as many lowborn called him. Only the coldest and most calculating of the highborn could aspire to the position, talent as a battle commander needed just as much as the ability to effectively get rid of opposition. Gregorius Ananiasson Isakyan was master of the Varyags for the last twenty years of the Crusade, a ruthless man disliked by some highborn for the large amount of lowborn blood in his veins.

Beneath the Lord High Chieftain were the Knight Captains that commanded the battalions and the Chiefs of the Assault leading the companies. Though usually highborn, a skilled lowborn could on rare occasions be promoted to Chief. Each company also had two lowborn Bannermen serving as their superior’s left and right hand responsible for maintaining discipline.

The Varyags never bothered giving recruits basic training, life in the Northern Way hives did more than suffice, and instead they weeded out the weak by throwing them into battle to ensure that the regiment was only made up the strongest and fiercest of the lowborn. In what was called a ceremonial burial, the survivors of First Blooding cut their left palms and swore oaths of service to the Varyags, the North and the Emperor. All their sins were forgiven and from that moment they were considered dead in the eyes of their people.

The materiel used by the Varyags was considered to be poor quality compared to that of other Imperial forces. A proud lot, the Nordmen refused to use anything made by the Mechanicum and chose instead equipment produced in the still functioning foundries along the Northern Way, the same weaponry used during Unification. “Northern weapons for Northern soldiers. Let the gear heads keep their shiny toys, we don’t need them,” was all the reasoning they needed. One of the most infamous symbols of 4th Northern was the Wolverine MBT, an armoured monstrosity unchanged since Old Night, rolling forward with a snarling wolf painted on its flank and severed heads used as decoration. Outside of the regiment these tanks were known as “corpse grinders”. A typical assault by the Varyags involved a spearhead of Wolverines tearing into the enemy while supported by riflemen, flamers and RPG sections mounted on IFVs; this also represented the regiment’s belief in retaining high mobility, the heavy stubber being the heaviest weapon used by the infantry.

Standard equipment for a Varyag rifleman during the Great Crusade:
- Mk V Skjold-pattern lasrifle (heavy or regular)
- Laspistol (various patterns)
- Melee weapon (usually a dagger or small axe)
- Stick grenades
- Incendiary grenade, Mk II Illuminator (some used the Mk III that released nerve gas prior to detonation)
- Mask of the Faceless Killer (respirator)
- Carapace armour

“Personally I think the Great Crusade is a lie, just like the belief that we fight for some higher purpose. You find that shocking, girl? Perhaps it takes a liar to see the truth. We kill, that’s all we do, what we have always done. Killing for one man is no different than killing for another. And don’t start talking about heroes, they’re a myth. All that matters in this life is who gets what and how much. That’s the only lesson a little girl like you need. I like killing. What I don’t like are the bastards that delude themselves into thinking that we fight for a noble cause, that each kill brings us closer to eternal peace. I’ll gladly show them the frontlines of their sodding Crusade and then let hell take them.”
- Endrin Karelion to Regimental Archivist A. Saroyan, 001.M31

Chief of the Assault Karelion, bearer of Blood's Honour First Class

gallery_73590_9397_91064.jpg

A grim cynic and self-declared compulsive liar, Endrin Karelion had served as a Varyag for over thirty years by the time Horus turned on the Emperor. He was born as the second son of an illiterate gunsmith in Alostan, one of the most unstable hives along the Northern Way, and developed a stubborn pride in his lowborn heritage while deeply resenting the highborn rulers. Destined to either rot in the hives like his parents or spill blood for the Emperor, he joined 4th Northern at age fifteen, taking the oaths a year later before he was sent to 743rd Expedition. The only thing he brought with him from Alostan was the lesson that his own survival was all that mattered. With this in mind Karelion clawed his way up the ranks with strength and cunning, always ensuring that a hated rival or superior was there to take a bullet meant for him; two such sacrifices were his own brothers. He finally ended up as Chief of the Assault, the highest rank achievable for a lowborn soldier. 2nd Company became a dangerous formation under Karelion, always in front and eager to get their hands bloody before anyone else, and their uncompromising delivery of Northern Justice got the attention of the Varyags’ VIII Legion masters. The soldiers had a grudging respect for him, preferring to fight and die for one of the old blood rather than the foreign nobility. In 996.M30 he was the senior Chief of 1st Battalion and chosen as second-in-command to Knight Captain Levina, giving him authority over four Companies on the battlefield. Aboard the Dusk Queen, Karelion spent the days drinking and smoking while telling exaggerated stories of his own exploits that drowned in lies. The highborn despised him, some for his disrespectful behaviour and others simply because he was lowborn, but no one dared remove him and risk dissent among the Varyags or ending up with a worse example of lowborn life as his replacement; Karelion was fully aware of this and used his status as untouchable for all it was worth. His fate is unknown.

An excellent completion Barabbas well done! biggrin.png A simple but effective palette, I like his longcoat too a well earned Sergeant thumbsup.gif Don't forget you can make a secondary vow for one of the other Regiments challenges if you fancy climbing above those three chevrons msn-wink.gif

For my part, here's my new regimental background piece:

The regiments of the Arukan are blessed in many ways. Exemplary training and equipment goes very far of course but the patronage of an Inquisitor Lord of some power and renown is hard to quantify. Of all the regiments from Arukan the 144th is most fortunate of all for the Inquisitor favours them when he has need to lead forces personally. While this wouldn't be an honour bestowed on a regiment that didn't deserve it even Firionel admits this is as much for the 144th's lack of any speciality as anything else. Where other regiments of Arukan often have a particular skill or method of war that lends them to certain actions the 144th are a more balanced force. A throwback to their original clan, as being surround by various aggressive clans with different talents at war they could ill afford to slip so decided to focus on becoming good enough at all rather than excellent in one. Such does the regiment continue the ways of their forebears and in doing so became the Inquisitor's favoured warriors as in most situations he can never be sure what he may encounter so all the better to have a force that can adapt to any requirement.

Just got to complete the model tongue.png Should be able to get some progress done tomorrow morning on that smile.png

Whipped up some information regarding my Pask "Count as" rather then copy pasting the existing Information about the Vostroyan 24th Heavy Armour Regiment

Colonel Vasiliy Kubanov

Vasiliy Kubanov is widely considered to be one of the most prominent Tank Aces in the Imperial Guard, A Hero of the Imperium of Man and the commanding presence of the Vostroyan 24th Heavy Armoured Regiment. Kubanov has commanded his personal Leman Russ Punisher “Emperor’s Fury” for nearly two decades and instinctively knows the limit of its weapon systems and his renown has grown in each campaign he has partaken.

Kubanov’s abilities as a tank commander were first demonstrated during the first stages of the assault on Kulth in the Spinward Front of the Calixis Sector. The Orks had shown an uncanny ability to destroy armoured units and the field was littered with the ruined flaming wrecks of Imperial and local vehicles. Once the day’s fighting had ceased Kubanov’s Punisher was the only vehicle operational. Under the cover of darkness Kubanov navigated his way through the burning wrecks to set up position within range of the Ork Lines. When daylight broke Kubanov and his Tank crew witnessed the Orks Rokkit Launchers, manned and guided by Gretchin. The crew watched and waited until the opportune time to reveal themselves and dosed the warmachines and munitions in fire from the “Emperor’s Fury” detonating the area and removing the Orks threat to the Imperial Armour. Throughout the remainder of the short assault Kubanov and his tank accounted for numerous infantry kills and 17 Ork armour kills as the Xenos were pushed back into the raging torrent of one of Kulth’s many powerfully flowing rivers.

Colonel Kubanov “The White Bear” as he is known amongst the regiment is currently still located on the planet of Kulth where he lends his experience and considerable skill to the Vostroyan 24th Heavy Armour Regiment in support of the Vostroyan 55th Infantry Regiment in their constant conflict against the Xenos threat of the Orks and the Rebels of the Severan Dominate.

RIght then. I've got both my starting, un-primed model pictures up in my Original Post.

That means I should have my name in both Heroes of the Guard (which it is) and also in Treads and Thrusters (which it is not).

All that's left is to head to town to get the secret ingredients for mud. Also, maybe paint the models, too.

Good stuff, just need the finished model now thumbsup.gif

Ok well I'll call this "done" I need to figure out my basing theme as well as clean up and highlight a few bits and pieces but do not have the paints and wont be able to get them until after the deadline, plus have been cracking on with my Vostroyans in between painting this guy. Also the light is shocking here at the moment

Like the work son of dorn, were you going for a Dr Doom esq look?

Barabbas, great completion on your krieg, such a dour scheme fits in so well for them.

In my regiments fluff I am trying to establish a link between the Vostoryans and the Maccabian Janissaries, the easiest way at the moment would be to include Dr Doom looks on the Redemption Masks that I have and will be incorporating into the army. Eventually I want to include some Scions representing the Maccabians
