Blood, Lies and Iron - An Iron Warriors log

Pariah Mk.231

Recommended Posts

This is the first time I've made a vow for Call of Chaos, and this is where I'll be posting my progress.

"I Pariah Mk.231 answer the Call of Chaos and vow to complete the below listed before January 15th 2015. If I do this successfully I will receive the Mark of Spilled Blood and continue on the path to ruin. If I fail I’ll wear the Mark of the Lost and I expect no mercy on my soul!"

- Chaos Lord with jump pack

- Chaos Lord on Juggernaut

- Chaos Sorcerer

- 5 Thousand Sons

- 5 Possessed

- 10 Chaos marines

- 5 Havocs

- 1 Obliterator

Pict-captures of these glorious warriors of darkness with be available as soon as the warpsmiths have completed their calibrations. (When I find something better than my phone to take photos on)

I will probably end up using this log as a general army log as well. I've decided to completely re-do my Iron Warriors, being entirely unsatisfied with the lack of care or passion I displayed the first time round, so in addition to the models listed above, you're likely to see the following also posted over the next few months; A Dark Apostle, a forgefiend, more marines, cultists, raptors, helbrutes, vindicators, a prince and spawn (for those boon results) and whatever else may materialize as I recycle my army.

This time around I'm leaning towards Tzeentch, but with a significant Khorne presence, as opposed to last time where I remained undivided with only a single unit of bezerkers bearing a mark (I used the old Index Astartes article as a guide for the list). Even without paint they're already looking much better this time around, for which I offer thanks to various forum members for inspiring me to push myself, primarily Insane Psychopath, but many others too.

Yep been there, did the same with my Word Bearers, twice. Now I am finally getting it all looking the way I want it. Hope it all goes well :tu:

Seriously, no effort beyond "cut from sprue, glue together and slap on some paint" was taken the first time around, no planning, no converting (other than simple kit-bashing), no sculpting and no vision. It was all just done in haste. I had almost as many loyalist parts thrown in as I had Chaos, models were posed in wonky ways, some bits were damaged and I didn't bother fixing them. I was so ashamed of them that I wouldn't take them out to game, I even bought a bunch of new stuff and made a small Black Legion warband to cover me until a time came that I could be bothered fixing my army.

Well, that time is now. More care has been taken, I have the desire to make something amazing and I've actually planned things this time around. No longer will I browse these forums and feel dejected that I can't achieve the same results. I know that I can and I will. This time I'm going to be the one making models that people will love.

Ahem. I'm also apparently going to give myself a public pep-talk.

Nothin wrong with loyalist bits, most of my Word Bearers are built that way (I started them as a pre heresy army back in the day before pre heresy was a fw thing, where we bought an entire box set just for one studded pad, and we used rules written by Bell of Lost Souls, it was madness) its all down to any extra details you use to bling them up. My Raptors are Black Templar torsos with the 'kiss the chef' aprons, Noise Marines are Dark Angel vets with the robes and my Terminators are Dark Angel minis with tabbards.

One thing I have started doing is looking at all the squads that have some bling scattered about, broke the minis down to make a few 'uber blinged' minis, I cannibalized twenty possessed that looked a bit 'meh' to make 5 that look :tu:

Just realized I am rambling, too many energy drinks and no sleep I do apologize.

As someone who has redone their army several ties (and is now turning all my old loyalists into traitors), I applaud you good sir. It will be worth it in the end, and I look forward to seeing more Iron Warriors on the board.

Now we get to the fun stuff, the Obliterator (there's a fair bit going on with him that can't be seen with the black spray, but I'm hoping will be absolutely beautiful once painted)

I haven't finished modelling the Possessed yet for my vow, so photos of them will come sometime in the future.

It really is, but I've slapped some silver on a few of them (and red for whoever has a cloak) and the details are already showing through. I'll take some more pics when I get home tomorrow night.

I've also swapped out the Possessed in my vow for some Bezerkers (already ok'd the swap), so I'll probably have some pics of them up maybe next week. I'm taking part in a store campaign that wraps up with a game of Apocalypse next Saturday and want to get as much of what I'll be using with at least their main colours done by then, so the Bezerkers may have to wait an extra week. I've already wasted most of my time assembling stuff for the big game at the end instead of painting the stuff I'll be using in the lead up, and I still need to do the greenstuff work on the Forgefiend within the next 7 days before I unveil him. I have a bit of a reputation at my local store for coming up with awesome conversions, which makes up for my sub-par painting (compared to the locals, who regularly win painting contests and things like 'best army'), but recently they've been lifting their game faster than my painting skills can catch up. So my plan is to set the conversion bar a bit higher to give me more time to improve my painting before I'm completely outclassed.

Which is what I intend to do with the Forgefiend. Provided the store has greenstuff in stock when I drop by tomorrow, I'll have pictures up for you by Tuesday at the latest. And I promise I'll take the shots BEFORE I spray it, so you can see the details. biggrin.png

Wow you did great work on the chaos lord.

I've still got 2 left after him. My housemate and I went halvies on a pair of DV boxes, I got the Chaos stuff and he got the Dangles. I also bought a bunch of chosen on ebay and figured I'd pick up another lord while I was at it ince he only cost $6AU. I can't remember how many chosen I bought, I think it was 4 sets from DV, so that would be 24, plus the 12 I already had, but the abundance is why I was comfortable just hacking them apart to make my raptors and the Thousand Sons you can't quite see above. Though to be honest, there was far less hacking involved with the creation of the raptors than the 1ksons, a few weapon and head swaps is pretty much all they got.

It really is a shame they never got their own release as a stand alone kit, as multi-part plastics the range of conversions would be damn near limitless. As an update, I know I promised you guys pics of the forgefiend by today, but my inherent laziness got the best of me today and I didn't do any work on it. The sculpting is almost done, just a few more bits to finish, which I'll either do tonight, or, time-permitting, tomorrow night after work. At the very least, I'll take some WIP shots of everyone else with their first coat of silver so you can see some of the details a bit better. I'll even throw in some pics of the other units I'm working on at the same time that didn't make it into my vow because they already had a layer of silver done before the vow was made.

  • 2 weeks later...

Man I've been slack lately very little done on the modelling front. But I do however have a couple of WIP shots of the jump pack lord (who mayor may not end up getting a gear swap and becoming a counts as Ahriman).

Not much to look at yet, but at least it's some progress. Still need to sort out taking better pics, but I'll get there.

  • 1 month later...

It's been over a month and I have an update, not for my vow just yet, but for the start of my 30k Iron Warriors. Snapped a couple of shots of the first two models (yes, only two, it only arrived yesterday arvo) from the Calth box. I ordered two boxes, so I'll have some spare bits and, as seen with the contemptor, duplicates of certain parts.

The first model is my double-dakka dready. I think I'll go back and re-position his waist again to compensate for his lean. I'm planning on using the other contemptor as a Chaos Contemptor with butcher cannons (using the forgefiend's cannons) to represent this guy 10k years later.

12208472_1191907104159300_24846313263118

Next up is my Librarian, who will be representing the 30k version of my sorcerer, before he goes all Chaosy.

12249884_1191907097492634_49558459562688

As you can see, I've gotten much better with the camera and been nice enough to remember to take pictures before spraying them. I'm going to make this army in such a way that my 40k Iron Warriors are the evolution of the warband.
