Sisters (and Inquisition) Rise!

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I've decided to finally give some love to my Sisters of Battle collection, probably with an Inquisitor and some Grey Knights singing backup. The question is, with the current codex, what are the "best practices" for the Sisters of Battle? I've been away from 40k for a while (months, almost a year...) and I'm pretty out of the loop. I care a lot less about winning games than having an army that's fun and fluffy to play narrative games with... but let's face it. Winning is fun.

So, what units should I keep an eye out for and what should I avoid? How should I paint up the models I've got? What should be on my short list to buy?

For context, I've got a couple of sisters with meltaguns, four sisters with flamers, and a canoness that I've got to decide how to build (someone I know is recommending an eviscerator...?). I've got two rhinos and an immolator.

Thanks in advance!

Assuming you have a few standard bolter sisters as well (if not, start with more of them), I'd recommend maybe picking up another couple of meltaguns as a first step.

Put 4x meltaguns together as a Dominion Squad (to take advantage of Scout and Ignore Cover), perhaps in an Immolator (with Multimeltas).

The Flamers could be distributed to Battle Sister Squads in Rhinos (2x per squad).

As for the Canoness - I'll be honest, I don't really know how to arm her... I'm still bitter about the disappearance of the "Jump Pack Canoness o'Doom" that was possible in the Witch Hunters Codex, so I haven't really used one since.  Perhaps an Eviscerator and an Inferno pistol (or Combi Melta), and run her with the Dominions?

The above would give you a neat little 1 HQ, 2 Troops and 1 Fast Attack.  The next logical step from there would be an Exorcist or 3...

As for what to avoid... Storm Bolter sisters.  They have about 1 decent use ( acting as a Superior w/ Storm Bolter in a Heavy Bolter armed Retributor Squad).  Army List wise- I wouldn't bother with Celestians - they're pretty useless (not to be confused with St Celestine, who is pretty awesome).   Other than that though, you can't really go far wrong by amassing all the Sisters you can!

There's a few schools of thought for the Canoness and the Eviscerator is included in one of them. Honestly, whether you need this expensive upgrade will depend on the rest of your army and what you want her to do for you.

Unit wise, it makes the most sense to put flamers on your troop squads and meltas onto dominions. The rest of the list is usually made up of transports, Support fire heavies and Seraphim for harassment. Sisters don't normally work well with allies though assault transports are a nice option we don't usually get, along with psykers and flyers, if that's your thing...

Personally, I would advise looking to units with speed if you're going the allies route.

My advice is don't discount our CC elements, either. Priests are our best unit in the dex for what they offer.

Only unit to avoid outright is the Celestians, but they are the same models anyway so you can't go far wrong.

Are people no longer using HB dominion squads?

"Retributor" squads?  With 4x Heavy Bolters?  Oh yes!  They're an awesome unit, and the only appropriate place for a Storm Bolter sister as well.  Only trouble is that they compete with Exorcists.  Mind you, they have a totally different role, so they've certainly got a place in most lists.  I've got 2 of these squads in the works... Definitely worth considering.

Good discussion so far - thanks!

Here's a question: where do you usually put your Canoness? Is the command squad garbage because they're Celestians? Or can they be worth it because of other advantages (for example, FNP from the Hospitaler)? Should I put her with a Dominion squad... just because? What?

*facepalm* yes I meant retributors, my mistake. I always take a squad, an exorcist and a squad of 3 penitent engines. Sometimes I drop the squad for a second exorcist but generally that's how I run my heavy...I'd love to be able to take another heavy though so I could have both my exorcists and the rets ^_^

I generally use a cannoness in the same way id use a punchy inquisitor (except a weaker varient in all aspects), give her a conclave squad with DCA's and the like, place her in a repressor and try and dump them quick, it works well with my Repentia as it means one of them gets to their target generally unscathed. This would be taking her with the eviscerator, I then generally add the +1A banner or mantle.

The command squad is much better then a Celestian squad because it has so many more weapons options and upgrades to benefit your army.  a Celestian unit's only benefit exists when you take them instead of a 5 girl Battle sister squad with Veteran superior; reason being, for the same cost you gain 4 extra attacks, better WS and a Ld bump.  Other then that they are identical.  The problems start when you consider that you lose Obsec and a much better act of faith in the process.

The command squad however gives you an extra spot for relics if you want it, the banner of +1 attack (actually pretty good alongside blob squads of sisters), FNP, or 5 specials, Heavies or power weapons slots if you want it.  I still wouldn't say they are the best option compared to others in our codex, but they are still decent and lightyears ahead of Celestians.

Canoness: my personal build involves a rosarius, mantle of Ophelia, bolt pistol and power axe.  If I have the points, an Inferno pistol is a good choice to replace the bolt.  striking at I1 is no big loss when you are eternal warrior and re-rolling a 4++ save, whilst S4 is fine when you're re-rolling hits and wounds (Obviously this requires priests to work).  I don't need anti-tank for her (if I did, there's always the melta-pistol) and I'd rather have the extra attack alongside re-rolls then wound on 2's, so another 15 points for an eviscerator really doesn't help me.  She really pairs up well with the sacred banner, gaining 6 attacks on the charge and re-rolling everything.

Also I would disagree with KiwiBen on the Retributors and Exorcists being a different role.  They're both static, ranged, support-fire units unless you take 3 Exo's and nothing else.  Then they're usually the main 'nasty thing' killing force.

My own Heavy support uses 3 Penitent Engines and an Exorcist.  I did take the HB Rets but they weren't as useful for me  The rending is unreliable and cover saves are everywhere in my local area.  Worst of all is my ability to roll badly on to hit rolls, basically rules them out for me.  However, whenever I get enough points (over 2000) then they are usually the first to be added back in.

I either run my Canoness with Mantle, Rosarius, Eviscerator and Bolt Pistol or with Mantle, Rosarius and two Inferno Pistols. Sometimes I run two Canonesses, in which case it's the pistolier who loses the mantle.

Cannot say this enough, if you're running a Canoness, consider putting the Heavy Bolters in Sororitas Command Squads. 5x Heavy Bolters is nothing to sneeze at, it doesn't take up a force org slot, and it mows down Necron Warriors like nobody's business.

The issue is it doesn't come with the Rending AoF, but that's OK in my book. 15 Heavy Bolter shots without rending vs 12 Heavy Bolter and 2 Storm Bolter shots with Rending, i don't think that's enough to give up a Penitent Engine / Exorcist slot for.

I've run an Eviscerator Canoness in a 20-girl blob, it's actually pretty killy.

Whilst I noticed the options available for the Command squad, I never really gave it much thought. Having up to five heavy weapon Sisters and not take up a slot is appealing...I really like the Heavy weapon Sister models too (they've been my favourite models to paint so far, save the Hospitallier happy.png )

Here's another question: the repressor.

Is it really worth it?

For context, "it" would be a fairly intensive conversion/scratchbuild based on a rhino model,

I absolutely see that the repressor is a little more durable than a rhino and comes with a heavy flamer and a storm bolter. However, if I want an IFV, I can always just bring an immolator, which has a better gun. The repressor seems to have lost everything it used to have. It's not an assault vehicle. It doesn't have any more firing points than a rhino. I suppose I kind of see how it's a nice intermediary "rhino-with-more-firepower," but I'm not sure that's worth the work.

Thoughts?

It has 5 fire points vs a rhino's two, and an immolator has none. AV 13 front armour is also much better than AV 11.

Huh. I thought the number went down from 5 to 2. It's hard to find the most up-to-date rules because they aren't up on Forgeworld's site anymore...

From my understanding the repressor has 2 firing points from the top hatch and 3 on each side. So realistically 5 at one target.

I don't have IA second edition, but that's what I gathered from googling for the rules. It seems that IA2 second edition was printed with 2 firing points then they faq'ed it to be 2 + 3 per side.

I also cannot find this Faq, so I may be completely wrong.

Anyway, I found the rules for the repressor and I'm sold. The totally messed up rhino I bought from eBay should arrive next week, and then I'll go to work on it.
