Grand_master85 and the Angels of Death

Recommended Posts

@BulbaFist - many thanks! Oh yeah, I've been using an airbrush for basecoating fdor well over a year now, couldn't cope without it! It's just painting large blocks of white, after painting almost 4k of off-white Death Guard, seems depressing as hell lol.

I'd like to try something else anyways now. Another challenge. I'm at Warhammer World this Sunday (my wallet isn't happy), so I'll see what takes my fancy. Considering the III, IVth, IXth and XIXth

Back from a short hiatus from painting. Currently, I'm taking part in a small escalation campaign and I plumped for Shattered Legions. It initially started as 500pts for the first month, with each month adding 250pts. There aren't too many restrictions and we can change what we added in the prior months if we like provided we stick to our legion choice (which mitigates the thing that sometimes, 250pts really isn't enough to buy certain things). We're currently on 1k points for this month and I decided to break away from the fast moving Jetbikes I've used, so I'm probably going to take out the White Scars. I was mulling over which Legio to add as my third, and finally plumped for Iron Warriors. Always been a big fan, and I adore their Contemptor (I know it's not what you'd call popular, mind). I've knocked up a quick tester, and added some pictures below alongside a shot of my three Shattered Legions choices. It's nothing fancy and probably doesn't stand out as much as the other two but I really like the duller scheme and it was incredibly fun and easy to do.

Shattered Legions part 3 continues apace. It's been nice not having to use the airbrush for these guys. So far I've got the Veterans squad and their ride finished. Currently working on a Praevian and a Castellax, but I've also got a Master of Signals and the IW Contemptor to build for them, plus a Thousand Sons Delegatus.

I've bought some missile pods to sit on top of some Cataphratii to make some Siege Tyrants and I'll be working on a second Veterans squad shortly, which will potentially form part of phase 3.

I will say, hazard stripes on MK II legs? Not fun! But I like the effect so will try it on a couple more marines.

Cheers all :) I did IW a couple of years ago but was never totally happy with them. By adapting my schemes for the other Legions, just gives the IW that little bit of grit they need.

Only took me a day to build and paint him, fairly pleased with the IW Contemptor. Will have to get another one at least, I think it's a lovely bit of kit. I always struggle with IW to make them look interesting, so I've tried not to grime up the back bits of the armour and any weapons.

I've next got a Master of Signals for my Iron Warriors and a Thousand Sons Delegatus to build. Also feel like my TS Rhino needs jazzing up so I'm gonna add some white in lieu of transfers.

Here's a few shots of the Dread and what I've painted for my IW so far.

@Dantioch - many thanks, and backatcha :) really enjoying these Iron Warriors. I'm at WHW in a couple of weeks so will be getting some more bits for them no doubt!

@Loddfafnir113 - it's fairly easy. After I've done my basecoats and layers etc, I gloss the whole mini. I used an enamel oil paint and pretty much cover the whole mini. Give it about 30 mins to set, and then the fun bit! I get some white spirits and dip a cotton bud in and wipe the oil off the main surface areas, whilst avoiding the recesses. By dragging the bud across the armour, it leaves a nice grimy film. Once that's done, I just use weathering powders on the legs and front of the mini and Matt varnish spray the whole thing. Hope that helps.

I think I only missed it, but how do you paint your Iron Warriors? How do you make them so dirty?

Gorgoff, here's my step by step:

1. Prime black

2. Spray Leadbelcher

3. Wash with black ink and, once dry, wash with brown ink

4. Splodge on watered down Leadbelcher

5. Over this, paint watered down Ironbreaker over the most prominent parts of the armour

6. Do your basecoats for the other colours (yellows, blacks etc) and then any layers

7. Gloss varnish anywhere you're going to add transfers. Apply said transfers.

8. Gloss the whole mini after (I use 1:1 gloss varnish and paint thinners so the gloss doesn't go on too thickly)

9. Let the mini dry. Once done so, I give a stupidly liberal coating of brown enamel oil over the whole mini.

10. Leave this on for 30 mins max. Dip a cotton bud in white spirits and wipe across the mini, trying to avoid the recesses. Dragging the bud across the mini gives it a nice grimy film to it

11. Base the mini in your desired scheme

12. Matt varnish spray the entire mini

13. Paint the eye lenses Teclis Blue, and drybrushing this around the edges to create a lighting effect

14. Paint a 1:1 mix of Trclis Blus and White Scar and highlight the lens

All done! It's a relatively quick scheme to apply as well, really enjoy painting it. If you need to know any more info, just give me a shout :)

@Charlo - Yeah, I tried to stay away from the plastic CML. I've always thought they looked far too big and I don't fancy paying a fortune due to their rarity levels these days. These were only a few Euros from Puppet Wars, very pleased with them.

Back to painting my Thousand Sons now. Shattered Legions really is something of a blessing and a curse for a hobby butterfly like myself.
