Grand_master85 and the Angels of Death

Jetbikes squad for my Thousand Sons finally done! I forgot how long it seems to take to do them. It's a small squad of 3 Jetbikers, with a Sergeant (the chap with the White shoulder pads) and a Volkite Culivern.

Leading the squad is a Thousand Sons Librarian (hurry up, FW, I want TS rules that allow Librarians as compulsory HQs!) on a Jetbike. He'll also double up as a Praetor with the Thousand Sons relic. I havnt completely finished these guys, just need to paint the eye lenses.

Here's some photos of the squad, one of all my Thousand Sons so far, and the Jetbike guys as part of my Shattered Legions force with the Librarian and a White Scars Khan at the head.

That's a gosh darn beautiful sight.

Though I wish gw would change nuln oil back to badab black. In fact all of the shades need to revert. Sorry personal gripe :p

All the TS look good together, the mixed jet bikes should be a thing. Here's hoping for good shattered rules

@HelterSkelter - lol, I feel your pain. I havnt used GW oils for some time now, I always use the Army Painter washes.

@BTB - many thanks :D I'm really enjoying the contrast of the colour schemes. I'll likely add in a few elements from other legions but these two will be the main focus. I've got another 6 WS Jetbikes and a Land Speeder to paint up, plus a Sicaran for them. Next up, I'm doing the TS rapier Quad Mortars

Your White Scars look amazing man! Probably one of the most realistic looking white schemes I've ever seen, I know it's probably been asked before but is there any chance you could share your recipe? Especially the weathering, I don't do much weathering and I can only dream of achieving results like yours.

Keep up the good work!

The Army Painter washes are literally identical to the old Badab Black and Devlan Mud (Dark Tone and Strong Tone respectively, I think).

They come in Vallejo-style dropper bottles. :biggrin.:

@Phosis T'Kar - I'm glad you like them! I've certainly enjoyed painting them so far :)

Yeah of course! Here's the step by step:

Prime white.

Airbrush the mini with 3 or 4 thinned coats of 5:1 Vallejo model air aged white and white.

Once dry, basecoat all your other colours (should guard trims etc), as well as any layers and highlights. Don't bother with highlighting the White.

Apply any transfers.

Paint some chips around the edges of the armour in a brown/black mix. Once that's dry, paint over parts of those chips with a dark metallic silver.

Once that's all done, gloss varnish the mini.

As soon as its dry, panel line the armour in the recesses with an enemal oil. Leave it till its touch dry, but no longer after that.

Get a cotton bud and dip it into white spirits. Wipe away any excess oil from the recesses. Drag it across the mini, which will give the effect of giving the armour a grimy look.

As soon as that's dry, fix any weathering powders.

Matt varnish spray the mini.

And hey presto! That's all there is to it. Sounds really long winded, but it isn't and it skips out the tedious layering of white.

Hope that helps; if you need any further info, let me know :)

That pretty much applies to all my marines, in trying to keep them in a similar style for my Shattered Legions army, to sort of unify them. I just change the basecoat colours and the colour of the enamel oil (I usually use a sandy brown, except for the Ulrras who had a blue grey oil).

It's saved me a lot of time and stress doing it this way

Hmm I've never used enamel oils before or really weathering powders for that matter but they're obviously very effective! Which brands of oils do you use? I've always quite liked the look of white scars and I think I might paint up a tester squad in the future.

Thanks for sharing.

Those are some of the most beautiful Thousand Sons and White Scars I've ever seen, and the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists look fantastic. I also love the way that you've mixed the units up. That's how a Shattered Legion army should look in my eyes, and you've captured it perfectly.

@Viridia - thanks chap! I always envisioned the squads wouldn't necessarily be 'one squad of Salamanders, one squad of Iron Hands etc'. The idea will be that at the core the Thousand Sons and White Scars will be at the fore. I'll then pad out the vehicle squadrons and infantry squads with odds and Sod's from other Legions.

I just can't wait for the rules next weekend! I think next up for infantry I'll be doing another 50/50 squad of TS and WS, then I'll look into doing a mixed command squad from other legions

No worries, chap! I used either MIG or AK Interactive. I also use MIG weathering powders.

I look forward to seeing your Scars on future! :smile.:

Have you ever tried the MIG washes? I've bought a few but haven't used them yet.

@Iron Bars - I've never tried the MIG washes, no. But with the scheme that I use, it pretty much removes any need to use them! The only time I do is when I need to wash any silver parts (weapons, tracks etc) and then, I just use Army Painter Dark Tone, which has been said is pretty much akin to the old Badab Black.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been a while since I've updated this, between various illnesses and annual leave, I've gotten a bit behind. Been struggling a bit with the Scars if I'm honest. I'm not enjoying painting them in anything that is greater in size than a Scimitar.

Currently taking part in an escalation league that a friend is running and I plumped for Shattered Legions. Currently just finished the second month's pledge, a Javelin Land Speeder for my Scars and a Sicaran Venator for my Thousand Sons. The latter was an absolute pleasure to paint (though I'm somewhat lamenting the lack of transfers still from FW for the Sons); the Javelin, on the flipside, I hated painting every minute of it. Not super happy with the paintjob, hence the lack of photos. Somewhat dented my hobby mojo, but I think I might just leave the Scars as is for the time being.

Shattered Legions can now comprise up to 3 separate Legions under the new rules from Forge World, so I think the Scars can stay a small fast-moving part. Fortunately, I'm really happy with, and enjoying, the Sons, so I'm sticking with them. I'd like to add in a 3rd legion and there's a few I'm mulling around:

Emperor's Children (though might not suit my slightly over-weathered painting)

Iron Warriors

Blood Angels (more red? but also the 3rd of the Librarius founders)

Ultramarines

Raven Guard

Now, I've done some Ultras already and liked them. But I'm kinda also tempted by both Raven Guard or Iron Warriors. Black would be a challenge and would stand out n8icely against the sea of red and island of white marines, and the Iron Warriors....though not an amazing book, I did love the idea of Magnus and Perturabo actually being quite close at one point.

Anyhoo, I digress. Here's a few snaps.

Long time follower, first time poster. I love your White Scars theme, dude. I bet it's frustrating to paint over large surfaces, but your theme is awesome. I never considered your legion before I saw your MKII dudes with the warm white and crisp red color. Just ace stuff imo.

Are you using an airbrush? If you don't have one, it makes painting large vehicles criminally easy. Hang in there and push through! Your stuff is great. Would be a shame for it to not become an big army one day :smile.:

Now that is impressive!

Your Venator is pretty awesome too.
