I too like the name Dark Soul. So much so that I pre-emptively named my Pariah unique unit Blacksouls :P I also like the blade ideas too, so much so that I may steal the idea for later. However, currently it seems that a Pariah consul can be made for most of the legions by just allowing access to the Pariah/Twisted Brotherhood rules for units/characters. I made a specific consul for the XVth because they keep their 'true' Pariahs separate from the rest and so the consul option helps to show that separation as none of the command staff/specialists are powerful pariahs.

However if others are interested in this idea I will back down as I'm not firmly entrenched in my belief. I would ask why it gets the Shrouded rule though. And I'd also suggest the Fear rule be removed as that is one of the five pariah power groups.

So 60 points and as a Warden we have to take 2 lvs of focus, right Griff?

Not too sure what you're asking here? For the Wardens they have to take the Focus upgrade for any pariah power they purchase (only the Psychic Void and Soulless groups), but if they purchase powers from the others then there is no focus upgrade so they can't take it.

Maybe the following examples will help:

  • Pariah Bob  purchases the Aetheric Tempest power (5pts) so he has Murderous Strike and upgrades it to effect all enemies (+5pts). He also takes the Dark Presence power (15pts) so he also causes fear in all enemies. As neither of the powers have Focus upgrades he needs only pay the cost of the powers he wants (25pts).
  • Pariah Gene also purchases Aetheric Tempest (10pts), but at the more expensive level so his attacks now cause instant death, but only vs psykers. He then takes the Soulless power (10pts) so all models in combat that don't have the Pariah rule suffer -1 Ld. However, because this power has a Focus option and he is a Warden of Light he has to also take that upgrade (+5pts), which means he only reduces the Ld of enemy non-Pariahs in combat. Gene has been forced to pay for being able to control his powers making the total cost (25 pts) even though he may not have been bothered about affecting allies.
  • Pariah Alan purchases Soulless (10pts) and decides to go all in on upgrades. So enemy non-pariahs suffer -3 Ld (+20pts) as long as they are within 12" (+15pts). He too must take the Focus option (+5pts) for this power so he only effects enemy units. Alan is a particularly powerful pariah so he also takes the Psychic Void (5pts) power and because this also has a Focus upgrade he must take that as well (+5pts) so only enemy psychic powers suffer -1 to dice rolls to manifest psychic abilities on him/his unit. Alan pays a total of (60pts) for his abilities being forced to pay 10 more than a pariah of another legion would have to in order to be able to limit his powers to only affecting enemies. Other legions get the choice, but as a Warden he does not.

Ahh. Now understand;) wasn't too sure about that. So i can purchase every path and if there is a focus upgrade i mist buy it cuz i am a warden of light.

I like the idea of a consul type pariah. Stuff for good model;)

So last night I was searching through the various various threads looking to port over the Legiones Astartes rules to my 'red book' compilation. I came to the Wardens rules and it occurred to me that the variation in the incidence of Pariahs in the Legions should come about from here rather than from the Pariah rules themselves (forgive me if I ramble a bit from here on).

The Warden Rule in question was this:

Legion of Blanks and Pariahs: No psykers of any kind may be used in a Wardens of Light detachment additionally, any unit with this rule may purchase the soul of light for 15 points per unit or 10 points per character. A unit/model with this upgrade gain the Adamantium Will special rule. A model with the ”character” specification may take the Pariah (Tertius) rule for 20 points. If the character is a independent character, he may be further upgraded to a Pariah (Secundus) for an additional 20pts, and to a Pariah (Primus) for another 20 pts warding: enemy models count as having -1I when fighting a model/unit equipped with weapons with this special rule.

And as much as I liked the idea behind it I thought it was a little silly to charge double points (nearly) to upgrade from a Tertius to a Secundus and so on. As even after you buy the upgrade you would have to purchase the powers too, making it very very expensive to do. So I thought I'd have a bit of a play around with things (yay insomnia), and I came up with this instead:

Legion of Blanks and Pariahs: No psykers of any kind may be used in a Wardens of Light detachment additionally, any unit with this rule may purchase the soul of light for +15 points per unit or +10 points per character. A unit or character that purchases this upgrade gains the Adamantium Will special rule. Characters additionally gain the Pariah (Secundus) special rule, or if the are an independent character they gain the Pariah (Primus) special rule instead. In either case a Warden of Light may not spend more than 30 points in a single category of powers.

Now this got me thinking about what In said earlier. What if our Legions had differing ways to access Pariahs? My own Grave Stalkers have their method defined already:

Eyes of the Void: Legion units may only take half the additional members/vehicles (rounded up) as indicated in their entry. (For example units that allow 5 additional members may only take 3 and vehicles that may be taken in squadrons of 1-3 may only be taken in squadrons of 1-2.) Additionally any non-vehicle units, and dreadnoughts, must take the Twisted Brotherhood special rule for +15 points. Troops choices are restricted to spending a maximum of 25 points on upgrades, rather than the normal amount.

And I had already come up with a possible alternative for the Wardens so it was just a case of thinking of two slightly different styles and accompanying fluff to showcase the differences. Also feel free to ignore everything further below if it doesn't fit with how you envisioned your Legion. This was as much a thought exercise as anything as I failed utterly at sleep at 2AM this morning.

Wardens of Light

Like in all their endeavours the Wardens strove for knowledge and mastery of their Pariah abilities. Only the strong-willed and truly dedicated would come to master these skills. However they had some means of control, through their masks. These arcane devices could lock off a Pariah's abilities until the Warden had sufficient self-control that the artificial barriers were no longer required.

This to me would seem to evoke the Warden themes of control and self-restraint. But also show that whilst powerful only individuals had the required willpower to hold their own abilities in check.

Grave Stalkers

Every member of the XVth manifested the ability of Pariah in some way, but many could only achieve battlefield-level effects when mobilised at the unit level. Certain rarer individuals were able to disrupt the warp around them on an individual level and these became the first Blacksouls.

By forcing units to take the upgrade the Grave Stalkers become an all Pariah army (as befits the fluff), and they have an elite corps of individuals who can do the same on their own.

Warriors of Peace

Always the scholar the Jade General encouraged experimentation within the Warriors of Peace in regards to their Pariah abilities. However it was only rank and privilege that truly allowed members of the XVIIth to develop these skills into a battlefield weapon.

Dark Age Science: All characters with this rule gain the Pariah (Tertius) special rule, independent characters instead gain the Pariah (Secundus) special rule. Praetors with this rule gain the Pariah (Primus) special rule instead. Models with this rule may only purchase up to 30 points worth of powers/upgrades from each category of Pariah powers.

Limiting to only 30 points I think suggests that the Warriors are encouraged to explore the breadth of their abilities in an attempt to know more about themselves. Which seems to fit with what I know of them.

Godslayers

The tactics of the Godslayers seemed to encourage the use of teamwork to take down dangerous foe. This ideal carried over into it's Suppression Corps, where squads would be teamed up to develop their abilities in concert to create a unit that was greater than the sum of it's parts. Though they may have been individually weaker they were able to make up for this with supreme co-ordination that boarded upon the preternatural.

Psychic Suppressants: Models with this rule gain the Adamantium Will special rule. Additionally any of the following Godslayers units may purchase the Twisted Brotherhood special rule for +15 points: Goliath Terminator Squads, Legion Destroyer Squads, Legion Terminator Squads, Legion Veteran Tactical Squads.

The list of squads could be expanded, but I think this would suggest that Godslayers focus on their teamwork to achieve objectives, which is something that makes sense given some of their background as monster hunters.

Ok. So you have probably noticed that I have almost paired up the legions here in terms of theme-ing their access to Pariahs. This is intentional as I think having two for the groups focus on unit tactics and two focus more on individual ability seems to make a nice dichotomy and separate them in terms of feel. You will also notice that the Warriors of Peace and Grave Stalkers have their abilities as compulsory whereas the other two have the choice, but must also pay for that choice. This is also intentional as the Warriors and Grave Stalkers are both substantially smaller so it make more sense to me that their nature be more pronounced given the smaller number of marines. It also helps to split the four in the other direction so that they all have a unique feel to them and so we don't have a sort of homogeneous "Pariah Legions" thing within the Brotherhood.

As I stated above feel free to ignore all of this if you like. But I would be interested in seeing if you guys think I even have a seed of a good idea here or whether you think I've just gone off my trolley through lack of sleep http://image.bolterandchainsword.com//public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png

Great idea. And i think you catched the theme of the wardens quite well.

Only question would be: how do I represent, that we have a 50/50 split?

Gwal let the aspirants choose if they want to be implemented with the terran dna from gwal which contains dna prior to his awakening as pariah and the dna extracted from Gwal directly after he was found.

Choosing Dna from after the reunion has a near to 100 percent chance to become a pariah. The dna from terra is nonpariah except if the ones implemented with it are near to dead and sustain physical and psychological torture, they can awaken the pariah gene on this dna. Those individuals who awakened it this way are way stronger pariahs then as if you only get tge awakened dna implemented.

See it like your immune system. If it fights without help against viruses and bacteria it becomes stronger compared to somebody who is might use antibiotics or vaccination.

So Secundus and Prime Pariahs all have awaken the gene themselves. Becoming a luth or comhedair is therefore a very painful and deadly ritual, as those habe to take the a nonwakened dna and must awaken it on purpose. ( sometimes individuals who awakened it themselves join then the luth or the comhedair)

So, given that a number of people have been confused by my wording of the Pariah rule I am hoping to do a re-work of the whole section in order to make it easier to read and understand. I'm hoping that those of you who are more literary than myself will be able to help me. Even if you just have some better fluff than what I've put in feel free to contribute http://image.bolterandchainsword.com//public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn171/Grifftofer/BotL%20Book%201-%20Insurrection67_zpsh1rawdx4.png

Here is the text itself for ease of access.

Pariah (Tertius, Secundus, Primus)
A model with this special rule may purchase powers from the Pariah Abilities (see below). A model with the Tertius level of this rule may purchase up to 30 points of abilities. A model with the Secundus level of this rule may purchase up to 60 points of abilities. A model with the Primus level of this rule may purchase up to 100 points of abilities.

Twisted Brotherhood (+15 points)
A unit with this special rule may purchase powers from the Pariah Abilities (see below) up to a maximum of 45 points. The bonus for the ability is only factored in once for the unit, not for each model. If an ability has a ranged effect it may be measured from any model in the unit with this rule. A unit with this rule may not be joined by an Independent Character that does not have the Pariah special rule.

Only models with the following special rules may also have the Pariah or Twisted Brotherhood special rules. In addition they have specific restrictions on the abilities they may purchase:

  • Legiones Astartes (Godslayers): Must always take the Psychic Void ability, before purchasing any others.
  • Legiones Astartes (Wardens of Light): Must always take the Focus upgrade for any ability they purchase.
  • Legiones Astartes (Grave Stalkers): Must always take the Indomitable Will ability, before purchasing any others. May never take the Focus upgrade for any ability they purchase.
  • Legiones Astartes (Warriors of Peace): Must always take the Soulless ability, before purchasing any others.

Pariah Abilities
The powers of a Pariah are split into five categories: Aetheric Tempest, Dark Presence, Indomitable Will, Psychic Void and Soulless. A model or unit with access to these abilities may purchase from any of the categories, subject to any points limits and Legion specialisations. Where the rules refer to Psykers/Pariahs they also implicitly refer to the Brotherhood of Psykers/Twisted Brotherhood rules as well.

Aetheric Tempest [5/10 points]
The winds of the empyrean swirl around the Pariah draining the very life-force from his foes.
The Pariah gains the Murderous Strike/Instant Death special rule on all of their melee attacks, when used vs a model with the Psyker special rule.

  • The Pariah may upgrade this ability to effect all opponents. [+5 points]

Dark Presence [5/15 points]
The very presence of the Pariah instills a dread feeling into their enemy’s heart.
The Pariah gains the Fear (Psykers)/Fear special rule.

Indomitable Will [15 points per level]
The Pariah is particularly resilient to warp-fuelled powers.
For every level purchased the Pariah provides +1 dice to the Warp Charge pool in the opponent’s turn and has one Mastery Level when rolling for Deny the Witch. Maximum of three levels.

  • The Pariah and his unit become completely immune to all psychic powers. Requires three levels of the base power. [+15 points]
  • The Pariah may roll Deny the Witch for units within 6”/9”/12”. [+10/15/20 points]

Psychic Void [5 points]
Psykers find the presence of a Pariah limits their ability to draw upon the powers of the warp.
Psykers targeting the Pariah, or his unit, suffer a -1 penalty to rolls to manifest psychic powers*.

  • Rather than suffering a -1, psykers targeting the Pariah, or his unit, require 6s to manifest psychic powers. [+15 points]
  • Psykers also suffer the effect of this power if they are within 6”/9”/12” of the Pariah. [+5/10/15 points]
  • Focus: This power only affects enemies. [+5 points]

Soulless [5/10 points]
The gaze of the Pariah chills the very marrow unsettling even the most disciplined of opponents.
Models with the Psyker special rule/models who do not have the Pariah special rule, suffer -1 to their Leadership value when in combat with the Pariah*.

  • Increase the penalty to Leadership by 1. To a maximum of -3 Leadership. [+10 points per additional -1]
  • Models suffer the effect of this power if they are within 6”/9”/12” of the Pariah. [+5/10/15 points]
  • Focus: This power only affects enemies. [+5 points]

*    Multiple sources of this modifer do not stack with one another, only the strongest effect is applied.

Along with Grifft's question, I also ask here, would the Pariah Legions rather they have an universal ban against Librarians, instead having a general Pariah consul? This would free them up to have three unique units, instead of a Pariah consul and two others.

I think this would be a good idea. I had an idea for that kind of consul a while back

There we go

n an army whose primary detachement uses the Legiones Astartes(Godslayers)(Grave Stalkers)(Wardens of Light) or (Warriors of Peace) a Legion Consul may be upgraded to a Dark Soul for +75 points.
Heartless, some would say soulless, individuals, Dark Souls are members of the Legiones Astartes who have honed their ability to use their powers as Pariah's to a level which many of their bretheren will never reach. In those legions within which the Pariah gene is especially prevelent, Dark Souls are frequently assigned to expeditions as commanders for their abilities are so finely honed that men's hearts stop and their blood turns to ice whenever a Dark Soul approached.

Dark Soul WS4 BS4 S4 T4 W2 I4 A2 LD9 SV3+/5+

Wargear: Power Armour, Anathema blade, bolt pistol, Frag&Krak grenades.

Anathema Blade. S:user AP3 Melee, Pysker's bane.

Pysker's bane: When a model using an Anathema blade is rolling to wound against a pysker then add +1 to its rolls.

Unit Size: 1 Dark Soul.

Unit Type: Infantry(Character).

Special Rules: Legions Astartes, Fear, Shrouded, Preferred Enemy(Pyskers), Independent Character, Pariah(Secundus)

Options:
As per the usual except for
As a Secundus level Pariah, a Dark Soul may take up to 60 points of Pariah abilities from Aetheric Tempest, Dark Presence, Indomitable will, Psychic Void or Soulless power groups.

I like some of the ideas in the Darksoul Consul, some of them are pretty close to ones that I had myself. I would ask that we come up with a different name though as it is very close to my own Blacksouls unit :) Personally I would make a cheaper consul, with the Pariah abilities being most of it's points, that way we leave in the customisability that making the modular Pariah rules gives.

UNTOUCHABLE (WIP name :P): 25 points

Wargear:

  • Anathema Blade: A power weapon (type shown on model) which provides +1 to To-Wound rolls when used against models with the Psyker special rule.
  • May not take ... (not sure if we want to limit the wargear options available to a Pariah or not)

Special Rules:

  • Pariah (Primus)
  • Preferred Enemy (Psykers)

I took out the Fear rule as it is already an option in the Pariah abilities so I didn't want to make that redundant and I made the Anathema Blade any type of power weapon because I don't think they should be limited to only carrying 'sword' type weapons. And even the Chaplain consul isn't forced to take a power maul in 30k. I also don't feel that Shrouded is particularly in keeping with the Pariah's theme, as it would allow them to out-stealth a Vigilator, which doesn't feel right. If we wanted to up the anti-psyker role further we could add 10 points to the cost and perhaps add Psyk-out Grenades to them, which could be fun. Oh and lastly I decided to make them Primus rather than Secundus Level as they will be the strongest manifestations of 'pariah-ness' in our armies so allowing them to be the top level makes sense to me. And if you don't want to spend so many points on them you can always choose to not do so and have 'lesser' Pariahs in a particular army.

With three yays (and some experimental rules), I guess that's enough to clear it.

Names for this Consul...the standard Pariah names are: Pariahs, Blanks, and Untouchables. So, we should avoid these three. Since they have a specific purpose, should it be something like Hunters, except cooler?

A quick look at synonyms for Pariah led me to Bezonian, which I thought sounded interesting at least.

Apparently it has two definitions:

  1. a military recruit
  2. a mean dishonest person (scoundrel)

A few other more common words that would seem to fit: Abomination, Anathema & Marauder.

Hmm, unique word, but don't like it.

  • Abomination is too harsh
  • Anathema should be reserved for the Emperor
  • Not sure if Marauder is broad enough.

Umbra is a Latin term for 'shadow', how about that? Or Phasma?

Culexan? Tie it in with the assassin type?

Nah, leave that to the mortal assassins.

Hollows could tie too closely to Bleach.

Nemesis...maybe. What's the plural of that?

Nemesis works for me. I've tried to make some adjustments to the wording of the rules in places to hopefully make it easier to read. I've also moved away from the dual cost base abilities moving have only upgrades. I've moved some text around to make it read more naturally and added a couple of build examples, which I hope help out a little too.

Pariah (Tertius, Secundus, Primus)
A model with this special rule may purchase Pariah Abilities (see below). A Pariah (Tertius) may purchase up to 30 points of abilities; a Pariah (Secundus) may purchase up to 60 points of abilities and a Pariah (Primus) may purchase up to 100 points of abilities.

Twisted Brotherhood
A unit with this special rule may purchase Pariah Abilities (see below) up to a maximum of 45 points. The cost for the ability is only counted once for the unit, not for each model. If an ability has a ranged effect it may be measured from any model in the unit with this rule. A unit with this rule may not be joined by an Independent Character that does not have the Pariah special rule.

Pariah Abilities
The powers of a Pariah are split into five categories: Aetheric Tempest, Dark Presence, Indomitable Will, Psychic Void, and Soulless. A model or unit with access to these abilities may purchase from any of the categories, subject to any points limits and Legion restrictions. Where the rules refer to Psykers/Pariahs they also implicitly refer to the Brotherhood of Psykers/Twisted Brotherhood rules as well.

The four legions who manifested the Pariah gene specialised in the different categories of Pariah Ability, focusing on those that meshed with their tactics most closely. As such models with the following Legiones Astartes special rules have the following restrictions on what abilities they must take before branching out into other categories.

  • Legiones Astartes (Godslayers): Must take the Psychic Void base ability, before purchasing any others.
  • Legiones Astartes (Wardens of Light): Must always take the Focus upgrade for any ability they purchase.
  • Legiones Astartes (Grave Stalkers): Must take the Indomitable Will base ability, before purchasing any others. May never take the Focus upgrade for any ability they purchase.
  • Legiones Astartes (Warriors of Peace): Must take the Soulless base ability, before purchasing any others.

Aetheric Tempest [5 points]
The winds of the empyrean swirl around the Pariah draining the very life-force from his foes.
The Pariah gains the Murderous Strike special rule on all of their melee attacks, when used vs a model with the Psyker special rule.

  • The Pariah gains the Instant Death rule on their melee attacks instead. [+5 points]
  • The Pariah may upgrade this ability to affect all opponents. [+5 points]

Dark Presence [5 points]
The very presence of the Pariah instills a dread feeling into their enemy’s heart.
The Pariah gains the Fear (Psykers) special rule.

  • The Pariah's Fear rule is no longer restricted to Psykers. [+10 points]

Requires three levels of the base ability.

[+5 points]

Soulless [5 points]
The gaze of the Pariah chills the very marrow unsettling even the most disciplined of opponents.
Models with the Psyker special rule suffer -1 to their Leadership value when in combat with the Pariah*.

  • The Leadership penalty applies to any model that do not have the Pariah special rule. [+5 points]
[+5 points]

*    Multiple sources of this modifier do not stack with one another, only the strongest effect is applied.

Some Examples

Kha'akk is a Blacksoul from the Grave Stalkers Legion, his special rule states that he comes with the Indomitable Will base ability and may spend up to 45 points on further abilities. As he already fulfils the Grave Stalkers requirement to have the Indomitable Will base ability, he may now choose other abilities. He wishes to spread fear amongst his foes and so picks the Dark Presence base ability for 5 points. However, he wishes for all to be affected by this fear, not just enemy Psykers, so he purchases the upgrade that allows his Fear special rule to affect everyone for +10 points. He decides that this is enough for now and totals the points costs of his abilities and adds them to his cost in his unit description. He has spent 15 points on Pariah Abilities and costs 30 points normally so his final cost if 45 points.

Undomien is a Warden of Light Nemesis Consul, and therefore can spend up to 100 points on Pariah Abilities due to having the Pariah  (Primus) special rule. Having trained in the martial traditions of his Legion, he decides to focus on combat abilities rather than battlefield ones. Therefore his first pick is the Aetheric Tempest base ability, for which he purchases both upgrades so that his melee attacks cause Instant Death on all opponents he faces. Next he takes the Soulless ability to demoralise his foes. Because he is a Warden of Light and this ability has a Focus upgrade, he must take that upgrade to show his honing of the ability into a weapon that works only on his foes. He also decides to upgrade Soulless to provide the maximum possible penalty and to affect all non-Pariah models. So far Undomien has spent 50 points on Pariah Abilities: 15 for Aetheric Tempest and it's upgrades and 35 for Soulless and it's upgrades. For his final ability Undomien takes Dark Presence along with it's only upgrade so that when he engages his enemies in combat they will be paralysed by fear and unable to combat him effectively. This costs a further 15 points, bringing his total points spent on Pariah Abilities to 65, which when added to his base cost brings him up to a total of 150 points before he departs for the armoury.

New Consul: Nemesis 35 points

The Godslayers, Wardens of Light, Grave Stalkers, and Warriors of Peace Legions have access to the Nemesis Consul. However, due to the Pariah gene that lies dormant in all of their legionaries, these Legions may never take Librarian Consuls.

Wargear

  • Psyk-out Grenades and Anathema Blade - A power weapon (type shown on model) which provides +1 to To-Wound rolls when used against models with the Psyker special rule.
  • May not take a combi-weapon, power fist, thunder hammer, or chainfist.

Special Rules

  • Pariah (Primus) and Preferred Enemy (Psykers)

How dies hollow tie to bleach?

I used thesaurus for synonyms and found thst as synonym for blank.

Why are they forbidden to take a powerfist, chainfist etc?

And are nemesii with terminatornarmor allowed?

And instrad of calling it blade. How about anathema weapon? Cuz my Nemesis will use a morning star^^ doesn't fit to blade

The power fist etc. is due to a personal idea that they would focus on using their anathema blade rather than using other equipment. So I removed the temptation to give them the 'more powerful' melee weapon options. I left the lightning claw in because I kind of like the idea of a pariah with one of them, but I should probably remove it too to fit with the idea. The combi-weapon isn't allowed because they are specialist weapons for a purpose which is not hunting down enemy psykers, which should be the nemesis's primary job.

And I don't see any particular reason to stop Nemisises from taking terminator armour or any of the movement options. In fact a hulking Terminator Nemesis sound pretty damn cool to me :)

Okay makes sense.

So what about the anathema weapon instead of blade. And i understand your wording only the 3 base levels of indominatable will is abit confusing. Maybe separate them. Lv 1 and you can buy this additional power. Lv 2.etc.

He doesn't mean the chemical, he's talking about the anime series Bleach. In it Hollows are the souls of the dead who have become "hollowed", turning into twisted and animalistic monsters, they hunt and devour other souls in a vain attempt to fill that emptiness inside them.

In it Hollows are the souls of the dead who have become "hollowed", turning into twisted and animalistic monsters, they hunt and devour other souls in a vain attempt to fill that emptiness inside them.http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Hollow

Ahh. Sounds like dark souls....somehow.

Bleach stands on my read.list, but time problems have allowed me only naruto and berserk as regular mangas.

Bit the hollow descriptiom is cool and would fit the nemesii^^

Listing the other options as upgrades makes it a lot better. If you do end up goving the option for terminator armor, you should probably also add jump packs as well.

I won't be specifically adding terminator armour as an option for them, because they can already take it due to being Centurions. I've just put in a few (what I think are) characterful restrictions on their equipment. Anything else they would normally have access to, such as legion weapons/relics, they can still take.
