Possum's unforgiven, Back in Black...

Greetings Honoured Brothers of the Rock.

Some of you may remember at the end of the ETL in 2013 I painted a tactical squad of Consecrators as a penance vow. Little did I suspect at the time that those tactical marines would lead  to me adding a modest 1500pts Ravenwing detachment to my collection. I've played that Raven wing force off and on for about 2 years now and they have been a blast to play. But then when the new codex came out I found myself drawn to the idea of fielding a full battle company, weird as the Ravenwing are so very good now but there ya go.

So as a full company is quite an undertaking I thought i should start a little plog to help keep my motivation up so this is it.

So first off a quick trip down memory lane to the Squad that sort of started this whole thing off.

Now I have spent almost literally a week trying to get the Consecrators icon right and have failed to get anything that is good enought that I can stand doing over a hundred times so I've sort of decided to use the Angels of Vengeance decal sheets I bought a while back (I must have been subconsciously planning this even then) .

There are two reasons behind this 1 they are almost the same as the Consecrators and I grew up in the Rouge Trader era when Dark Angels were black with a red stripe on their helmets AoV are all Black but I've kept the red stripe

2 Because I recall in the last codex there is a little fluff piece about the master of the AoV's 2nd Company leading the Ravenwing for 20 odd years and as I started out as a Ravenwing player it sort of seemed to fit.

Brother, your models are a sight for sore eyes! They look great :happy.:! It's always fun to see peoples' take on Unforgiven Successors, be they "canon" or DIY. You are right to keep the red stripe and accents on your band of merry gentlemen as it is such a great throw back to the past.

If I may ask a question: do you have a proper light box or have you set this up on the go? I ask because my pictures need that extra...well, everything, to be honest. I took a picture with my piggly wiggly hand holding it because I was rushed. Yes, rushed . Your Squad / Squads look the better for it.

Would you perhaps like to enter your Squad in a little writing challenge that Grand Master Belial is running? I'll just leave the linky right here just in case the mood moves you. There are no winners or losers but you can be incorrect .

Anyway, everything looks great so far! Look forward to seeing more, mate!

Wow Thank you all for your warm welcome,

Thank you for your kind words. In answer to your question, no I don't have a proper light box, I usually just tape some white card to one of my figure cases and use that as a backdrop.  I'm not sure how good my writing is truth to tell, I might have a go though I do like my little dudes to have a bit of a story to them...

Very nice. Work, they really have the look of the old Legion's armor. In would love to see a banner for your army. Love the studs in red also.

Cheers I'm glad the Rouge trader feel comes across, there's no skool like the old skool right? :smile.: Humm I havent given too much thought to a banner yet but i'll get to it in time fear not! I did actually do the studs as a bronze colour to start with and then hated it! After a bit of messing around i stumbled on red and it seems to work so that was nice.

Very nice!

I like the dark green casings for the weapons. Retains the DA connection and still look grim.

Thank you too. Glad you "got" the green casings straight away, I thought I was very clever for coming up with that one:wink:

Yep, some bad as.. First Legion you have there Possum

:biggrin.:

stobz

Thank you I spent a frighteningly long time reading through your plog, yours is fantastic work and a real inspiration.

Really lovely models, Possum. Now, where are the rest? :biggrin.:

Ah yes thank you and I was coming to the rest in a mo honest:cool.:

what colour-scheme do you use for raven- and deathwing? Will the RW also be black?

The marines look very good!

Yep the Ravenwing are raven coloured and carry Raven wing iconography but with the red helmet stripe. Sticking with my self imposed old time look I'm planning on having my Deathwing in black too but in Tartaros pattern Armour in the main, I'm going to see if I can convert the plastic Betrayal on Calth Cataphratii into DW Knights.

But that's a way off yet:biggrin.:

So Gillyfish I started my reborn unforgiven on the ropad to a full company with some devastator's (mostly to use the spare heavy weapons to give me options when building the Tactical squads) Now do remember that these dudes are 2 years newer than the Tac guys from the first post in the intervening time I've edited down and (I hope) improved on my black armour technique.

Wow! your work has improved a tonne in the last two years; I love the Dev squad, your multi tone highlights and details like the lenses, eyes and lights etc are really top notch :tu:

I'm with Isiah on the bronze bits too, great characterization.

Question: Do you use any sealer on your transfers?

Thanks all,

Dark rage: I never would have guessed you were a fan of RT black and red:happy.: Thanks for your kind words I followed the link from your sig and was blown away by your Consecrators!

Isiah: Thanks but I should confess the bronze is the top joint of the loader servo arm thingy-mbob. That said I might pop a few Bronze exhaust vents in here and there from now on.

Brother Stobz: Thank you very much. It took me ages to learn that less is more when it comes to painting black. I had to push myself to learn "gem" techniques when I did my High elves (back when I had a game of massed fantasy battle to play :furious: ) . In answer to your question I'm just using Lamian medium at the mo to seal my decals. Sadly I live in the sticks a bit and there are no proper model shops for  many many miles around. So I get my old man to pick up micro sol, micro set ect for me when he goes to model shows (he likes his model ships).

By the by everyone is being very nice and I appreciate that, but I'm totally open to proper C&C. I know how many epic painters there are just on this forum let alone on B&C in general and I'm always up for learning and improving.

Hi again,

Bryan B. Thank you, and I have indeed been keeping it up:cool.: The Devastators I did end of september start of October time so next in the Angels recruitment drive was a company master, I used the web store limited edition captain that had been hanging around waiting for me to pull my finger out.

 http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/tasciovanous/Dark%20angels/024.jpg

Now truth to tell in my opinion the flesh tones leave a bit to be desired and now I look properly the shading on his cloak is too heavy. Anyone else spot areas to address?

So inspired by Brother Stobz progress tracking

Thats 16 down 122 to go!

Edit: dodgy maths corrected on how many dudes left till I've done the whole company.

Honestly, and this is no complaint but, I think I see a bit of something by the edge closest to the camera beside the Chapter Badge. It looks like something you could chip off so no worries.

The eyes. The horror, the horror! Maybe paint them the same as the rest of the flesh because right now he looks soulless. I paint my guys' eyes the same as the rest of the flesh so I'm not saying go and paint an eyeball. You have to blink sometime :laugh.:!

Besides those things I think you nailed it. The flesh looks nice but, yeah, the cloak looks uneven. I have two of those guys and then one of the super secret Captains. You know- the one with the helmet and the plasma pistol.

Opps Thanks I totally forgot to do the whites of his eyes! How did I miss that:blush.: I think the thing on his shoulder pad is a reflection or some dust. I've just gone and had a good long hard look at him and cant see any thing there but thank you for looking. I did have one of the super secret dudes too but I painted him up as a salamander and gave him away to a friend.

Anyone else got any comments before I take him off to eye and cloak surgery?

He looks cool, if you would like a little CnC, I'd be happy to give a little (you sure don't need much)

Nor waiting for reply ;)

If you 'paint' the face a couple of times with different washes to blend the different colours you used it will look much smoother. The eyes can be easily done well by painting the whole 'ball' either silver or white and once dry bunging a little green or blue wash into it, at that scale you cant see pupils so don't bother.

Fantastic, yes i do like CnC its how you improve. I think your flattering me saying i don't need much:thanks:  I'll try a wash or two I guess quite thin, more like a glaze?

I'm a glutton for punishment so I do normally do the whites and pupils, but you do have a valid point about scale, mind you I also paint the interiors of all my vehicles and no one ever sees them so read what you will into that:biggrin.:

Ha! I glue my doors shut, painting inside them is an abomination.

I use a random combination about 6 different glazes and/or washes ( to create a little variety) and just keep going (with occasional highlights underneath, never finish with a highlight on skin) until it's smooth, the thing about painted skin is that it's meant to look slightly transparent in order to better mimic the real thing.

Hope that makes sense with all the brackets :biggrin.:

Oh dear its seems I'm a serial offender in the abomination stakes:unsure.: Just have to hope the chaplains go easy on me!

On a more serious note thanks for the advice. I hope I've put it to good use...

So here he is again the boss man following his trip to painting A&E.

Better? Any thing else to fix?

Thanks, Possum. Now I have to start painting my guys to an above satisfactory level :tongue.:!

He looks smashing. What I saw on the last photo was a glare, as you said. Seeing him makes me want to break out my same captain, replace his head with a cowled one, and go to painting town.

You're inspiring people now. Better watch yourself :biggrin.:!

Looks good, curious do you paint your eyes last on the face? I always paint them first and then paint around them, same thing with normal helmet lenses, I cant paint them into the small areas without making mistakes.

Thanks D.R. and yes i do paint eyes last. first I paint the orb black (hence the scary soulless stare from previously) and then I dot the whites in with pallid wych. I found that pure white was a bit too stark. The main advantage for me of doing eyes like this is it leaves a thin black line around the eye and allows me to have a bit of control over where they are actually looking (of course some times I cock it up and end up with very cross eyed dudes :whistling: )  but mostly it works for me.

Also the recruitment drive continues. As I had the re purposed dudes formerly known as my penance Consecrators, the DV tactical squad (led by the aptly named Sargent Not-appearing-in-this-log-due-to-a-habit-of-wearing-green) and now my 10th Squad Devastators. I can MSU the Tactical 's and then I just needed an assault Squad to be able to field a Lions Blade demi company so guess what's next...

Yep some jump pack joy.

Sorry about the out of focus plasma pistol. This guy proved to be a bit of a trial for my very limited photographic skills!
