A Badab War Tale of 8 Gamers - the Vega III Incident

Recommended Posts

Things have grown a little quiet here.. guess that's the holiday month for you. I haven't had much time to indulge in the hobby, but I have put some paint on the other squad of terminators I had in my list, as well as assembled some more bikes. No pictures (yet) so you'll have to take my word for it.

I also recently purchased a really big stompy robot which I can't wait to get my hands on. Forgeworld even generously painted it up in Exorcist colors!

Wow, some cool stuff here :)

I really like Naryn's Mantis Warriors. When I saw the yellow on the bikes I almost squee'd thinking Tranquility veterans!!

It would make my day if you did some of those veterans.

Stoneheart your work is amazing as usual

Hushrong, if the meatllics are such a bugbear, how about doing the old school stippled dark blue/black pattern from rogue trader days?

The display flickered again. Where had been only shifting shadows on silent walls moments before, now stood hulking silhouettes, the blue glow of the hologram playing off the matte edges of pauldrons, helms, cuirasses. Off the gleaming muzzles of weapons. As one, ten pairs of blue eye lenses illuminated, glowering like the vengeful dead in the darkness. The Imperial auxiliaries had a split second of shock before they were dismantled by a ripple of suppressed bolt fire. One soldier brought his weapon to bear with unsteady hands, the beam of his flashlight illuminating one of the intruders--who closed with him faster than any human could have, and imploded his skull with a mailed fist.

It was over in seconds, a scream of chain-teeth and crunch of bone punctuating the eruption of noise. A subsonic click.

“This is Adamus. Bunker is ours.”

Tranquility veterans, reporting in!

Had a ton of fun painting these guys.  Full disclosure, they've been done for a while--but I haven't been able to bring myself to start working on my Dreadnought Drop Pod, so I'm putting these up for dantay_xv instead.  I run them either as scout snipers or Sternguard, depending on the list I'm fielding. The Forgeworld Legion Recon Squad is a fantastic kit, and I had a blast kitting them out like those old-school vets.

Now I can Squueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Love the Tranquility veterans... Thank you for making my weekend

And I agree on the recon kit, It is fantastic. The only limitation is in pose-ability. I am intrigued to see how easy it would be to remove the RG iconography from the Mor Deythan and make them into Recon marines too.

Great updates folks!

Hushrong, if the meatllics are such a bugbear, how about doing the old school stippled dark blue/black pattern from rogue trader days?

The thought had crossed my mind. I like other threads I had seen where they use the old school colors, much like Naryn's Tranquility vets.

I thought about a squad or a handful of veterans keeping them as some form of camo from a previous campaign before rushing off to Badab.

However, I have the paints and primed minis I will be practicing on soon to try and nail a shade of metallic blue I like.

These are hard bastards commented Lukcas over the vox channel.

His brothers grunted and nodded in approval. It was what passed for a compliment regarding a worthy foe.

Franc and Hoplis took cover with their bolters shouldered. They watched over their brothers who now took their turn to recover.

Their armor all shared the tell tale sign of the most strenuous form of combat, boarding actions. No surface of armored plate was unscathed. They were chipped and blasted, torn apart and burned. Their foes were skilled and adapt to this art and seldom missed when firing their bolters.

Joints were sluggish and bundles of fibre-muscles twitched with inactivity. They worked hurriedly to rejoin the battle raging within The Fury. The remaining Executioners of Squad Hortaj reloaded weapons, scavenged what they could, and took trophies from the dead at their feet.

Lukcas looked as his brothers finished and prepared to move. He felt something that masqueraded as a sin of guilt as he rushed to remove the helm of the warrior before him. His warriors were ready to continue battle, to remove the infestation that forced itself within their ship, and he was taking precious seconds for a selfish act.

He looked ar the face of the honored dead. The sergeant of this pack of Marines Errants whom fortune damned with a confrontation with his own warriors. Lukcas drew his gladius, whispering prayers, and with his other hand grabbed a lock of the dead warriors hair and pulled to expose the neck.

With a thrust his blade bit deep into flesh and bone. Then with a flick of his wrist and downward push of his arm he severed much of the head from the body. Finally, he pulled with his arms while the fingers grasped the dead warriors hair to rip and tear the last of the flesh that connected head to shoulders.

He tied his trophies hair to the leather belt that hung at his waist and smiled.

Join your brothers he said with dark humor.

His warriors laughed as they looked at the dangling trophies that hung from Lukcas' belt. Each had taken the heads of those they had slain with blades but Lukcas' belt would soon become burdensome. Soon he would have to leave behind trophies to retain the ones viewed as most worthy in a Death-Speakers eyes.

Then with nod from Lukcas they sprinted to stalk through the corridors to hunt. There were more honors to be earned, victories to be taken, and heads to be claimed.

I haven't been entirely unproductive. It is not much but I have built two more tactical marines and one sternguard.

My current issue is that I feel these are a bit plain so I hope they will stand out better with some paint in the future.

Lastly, I paid a visit to the armorium and began the usual divvying up of war materials. I have started with my sternguard whose squad i hope to have done by the end of the week or into this coming weekend.

Where does this helmet come from? I've looked everywhere with zero luck finding it. Please help?
It's one of the three head options from the Venerable Dreadnought sprue.

Hello, friends!

I will start with a confession. I have been slacking so apologies to my Brothers-In-Arms Secessionists and to those territory-snatching, grubby-hands-stealing-everything Loyalists. Long story short is I have been busy and what free time I have I am balancing between this and another project.

So first, a work desk shot:

http://i1350.photobucket.com/albums/p779/theironwithin/Mobile%20Uploads/E0261729-1093-4A9F-AF4E-95265C27CB98_zpsqmo137av.jpg

Somehow I work with clutter but tidied up a bit for the shot. I like these shots as I like to see other folks "armories" where their forces are built and armed. Plus, I do not have a light box but just saw this tasty deal at Staples.

Then an up close shot:

http://i1350.photobucket.com/albums/p779/theironwithin/Mobile%20Uploads/747DB519-9729-4B79-B5D0-CC96F1F81B29_zpsnl0s6evt.jpg

I want to try chipping away at their armor at some point. In the fluff the Executioners bear battle damage as marks of pride. So that will need to be done. I also want to add some freshly claimed trophies in the form of heads and/or helms but I am worried about how much space that would take up around their waists. I am debating about having bloodied skulls as they are small and could represent freshly killed and peeled enemies but it seems too chaos-y. Plus, who peels a skull in the middle of a ship-boarding action?

Lastly, this was my pride and joy in ingenuity in this group. I had created a Grosjean-Pattern Flamer that spews the entire crispy-cooking fire template but with a shorter barrel.

Then I remembered the Blood Angels already have these…

I guess in the fluff they saw Lamenters brandishing some and asked for a few themselves.

Anyways, I will be practicing cutting away and chipping armor on these guys as I start work on the next squad.

Hush, those look awesome!  I really like how dynamic their poses are. Standouts are the sergeant and both flamers.  They'll look excellent painted up!

I'm afraid I've been lazy too, unfortunately.  The holidays had me pretty pressed for time.  To make things worse, I've only got four models left to paint before I end up with only vehicles to paint: a drop pod, a Stormtalon, and a landspeeder, as well as a Rhino repaint.  I hate painting vehicles, so I've stalled somewhat.  That said, I have bits in the mail to allow me to finish up my Terminators and my Centurions, so expect another post here within a few days.

Cheers to all, and hope you had a happy holiday season!

Thanks for the kind words! I am happy they come off as dynamic but something had been gnawing at my conscious. When I joined in this project with y'all I wanted to make marines that looked good and their leaders to look great. I did not do that with my assault squad.

Thinking over and over about my leader I started to rummage around on my phone and computer. While playing around on my phone I came across some fluff notes I jotted down for my characters and looking at images I came across this:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m289/Sheep_06/Sons%20of%20Horus/WEWIP2_zpscb7bb0d4.jpg

This is an image I had saved on my phone since I first saw it. I even transferred it to my most recent phone as well because when I saw this guy (and one of Sheep's other SoH minis) I knew I wanted my own copy and had to keep this for inspiration. With that in mind I took my current Assault leader and went to work.

Thankfully, being a Son of Malice fan I am not squeamish about cannibalism because I ripped that marine apart. Whats left of the torso and legs will be used in my Tactical squad while I salvaged the jump pack and axe.

Now that I think about there was no point in ripping that guy apart. ANYWAYS...

What I came up with an hour later was something more satisfactory. May I introduce the Venerable-Sergeant Derius Cort, Breaker of Swords:

http://i1350.photobucket.com/albums/p779/theironwithin/Mobile%20Uploads/77125A2F-2042-4396-92AB-25885BD0B4EB_zpswb83kp6z.jpg

He still needs a touch of GS but I am very happy with him now.

Wow, hush, that sergeant looks awesome!  That choice of head combined with the BaC studded pauldron and body make him look really vicious, and give him a really characterful pose.  Any Mantis Warrior would be proud to fight alongside the Breaker of Swords!

Just a quick update from me today.  I've finished up three of my five Terminators.  The other two are waiting on replacement parts to come in the mail.  I stocked up on Space Hulk bits, just in case, but unfortunately it was the Dark Vengeance stuff I needed to change around!

http://i.imgur.com/R1J3b1e.jpg?1

I like to put the tufts on the base when the whole squad is done, as a finisher, so when they're entirely done the tufts will hide the places where the crackle medium flaked.  Cheers all, and remember to fight for Badab!
