Starting a new faction - if you had to choose

LFGS is having a Black Friday sale later this week (20% off).

I've been playing Blood Angels since I re-started the hobby a year ago (sometimes with a bit of Imperial Fist allies).

I'm looking to start a new Faction and I need your input in picking one, since I want one that's "different", and who knows better than the B&C Sons of Sanguinius?

I'm open to any (well .. most) factions except loyal space marines.

What should I consider and why?

Right off the bat I find Eldar Aspect Warriors (ie. not Wraiths) and Skitarii attractive, but I'd love to get some input from the forum.

Well, first off, you're only going to get pro-human answers here msn-wink.gif No dirty xenos.

Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus are a lot of fun, and have some very cool rules and wargear, making them quite different to Space Marines of any stripe. They'd have my vote.

actually...no.

Go Eldar or Tau. Currently they don't seem to ever get nerfed.

If it were me I'd go Ad Mech / Skitari or Inquisition - fun and interesting models / rules / wargear.

If you're more inclined to go for power then Eldar, Tau etc - but remember building an army is a long process and power shifts ;)

If you've only ever played BA and want something different, I'd advise that you stay away from the Eldar as they rely on movement a lot like the BA(admittedly in a different form). However, if you just want to get away from SM but keep a sinilair play style then go Eldar or Tau. If you want a sledgehammer force go IG or Orks. Madness go orks. And if you want to do an infantry heavy army where you win through sheer weight of numbers, IG or Tyranids.

Skitarii are awesome, and can also work well with your BA if needs be. Awesome models, fluffy rules and enough combos to make them effective. Check out 'winters SEO' on Youtube for some great Ad mech content.

Tau and eldar also look cool imho and, as i'm sure you are only too aware, can be effective. I myself have a little strikeforce of Tau (6 fire warriors, devilfish, razorshark strike fight, cadre fireblade) because they are so different fom the BA both painting and playing wise that they're a nice break and have pretty cool aesthetics to boot.

Not too fond of crons, nids or dark eldar, but they have their merits... Which don't need to be discussed here... Don't worry Jolemai the Moderator, nothing here of note...

Astra M... Astra Mil... Fething Imperial Guard are fun, but will take a long time due to sheer numbers, unless you go armour armour armour! New dex is coming out and i believe tanks will feature heavily. Again, good allies with Blood Angels and diferent play style massively.

Ad mech for the unusual factor

(Dark) Eldar for the glass cannon aspect.

I played Eldar exclusively for 4-5 years, and they're a lot of fun, you have to learn to use them in a different way to marines, although Blood Angels are edging towards that playstyle.

How about this:

Which faction would best compliment your current army?

Which faction would best counter your army?

Which faction have you always wanted in your showcase?

Which factions models have you always wanted to assemble and paint?

What is your favourite story/background?

What faction do you know least about?

Answering these will probably give you a clearer idea what is best.

It''s not about power. I've always been fond of BA and Eldar. And by Eldar I mean 2nd and 3rd Ed stuff, so Scorpions and Reapers and Fire Dragons. Not D-flamers and Wraithknights.

It's about getting to play a different kind of game and having some fun.

Dark Eldar are off the table. I don't like the models. I hate Tau with a vengeance - also not going to happen.

How much are you considering spending on your new army? and what points level  do you want?

Who are you asking? Me, sitting here calmly at my desk? Or me, gotten caught in the moment at the FLGS? They're not the same person. Where I play we're usually capped at 1850, so around that mark.

I'm been thinking about starting a small Skitarii force multiple times to be my shooty allies and slowly building from there. But Eldar are so shiny. And IG are getting new, shinier stuff soon.

AM/IG armor lists are strong, simple and can look fantastic on the table. Plus, two units of veterans for the compulsory troops slots doesn't take all that long to paint.

Sure, you'll struggle against some armies, but if everyone was the Eldar then no one would be.

How about this:

Which faction would best compliment your current army?

Big, long range guns

Which faction would best counter your army?

Gunlines

Which faction have you always wanted in your showcase?

Eldar, Leman Russes, Skitarii (

Which factions models have you always wanted to assemble and paint?

As above

What is your favourite story/background?

No idea. I don't know enough 40K fluff. What little I know about the Eldar sounds well written.

What faction do you know least about?

There are so many

Answering these will probably give you a clearer idea what is best.

I agree with this.

Imperial Guard and Inquisition are my non-Blood Angel armies and both offer a totally different gaming experience from BA. The painting/modelling experience of IG can be totally different too if you go with a more 20th/21st century look. I enjoy switching back-and-forth between camouflage and khaki and my shiny gold and purple BA successors.

Do people actually play Inquisition and nothing else?

Or are they just used as allies.

Caveat: I'm not going to buy a huge collection of overpriced resin kits. That will also factor into my decision.

Just don't do what I did and get enticed by all the pretty chaos models of Khorne daemonkin. Now I have two fast assaulty armies and more red to paint than any sane man can handle.

Before I started that army however, I bought a whole bunch of smaller armies to use as allies to my blood Angels. As such I have a small militarum tempestus force, a decent amount of skitarii, some inquisition and grey Knights, some regular marines and imperial Knights/assassins etc. I love having a bunch of options for battle brothers and things that can plug holes in my BA army. My next project will be an imperial guard small army using the Cadian hostile environment upgrades from forgeworld because they look amazing and as many have said, imperial guard synergize very well.

Necrons appealed to me because they don't have a massive amount of different units and forgeworld models and so on, so you can get yourself a nice complete army for not too much money, and don't have to worry about all those extra purchases that will bleed money away from new blood Angels stuff as its released.

Eldar on the other hand, lots of units, newly released forgeworld stuff, at some point you will almost definitely be tempted to branch out into some dark eldar and harlequin allies. It's gonna be a big money and time sink. They are cool though, I totally get that. Same deal with making a dark eldar army.

Tau is gonna cost you a fortune and the models look crap, nothing more to say there.

Orks are awesome, but going from one assaulty army to another is a bit boring.

Tyranids are cool, but again another assaulty army.

Basically taking the long way of agreeing with everyone else here, ad mech or imperial guard would get my vote. Although if you chose imperial guard might be worth waiting to early next year to see what updates they get before committing.

Or you could ignore all this advice and go nuts on an eldar exodite army, I mean.... It's fricken space elves on dinosaurs...

I'd probably do Sisters of Battle… no, wait, I DID do that.

So maybe I'd add Inquisition and Grey Knights… no, did that, too.

Okay, so IF I were to start something new it'd be 30k, and a lot of the models can pull double duty so it would also be a 40k army. I'd do Salamanders… nope, that's my newest project, and I just ordered more last night.

Sorry, OP, I don't think I can help you.

After "finishing" completing my Blood Angels (Even if it will not really end in some ways^^), i should switch to :

30k Night Lords => I'm mad, you're mad, we're mad =)

40k Dark Eldars => i'm feared, you're feared, we're feared =)

(Should i precise that i tend to always field Seth/Fallen Tycho/Astorath/Death Company/DC dreadnought ?^^).

I'm not bad, just Thirsty, for Blood, Pain, and Soul =)

Well yes.

I like the allure of a tank company. That would be WAY different to play. Vehicles are easy to assemble and paint, but a pain to transport. I could dig deeper into the Scale Modeller bag of tricks for weathering and what not. I could use them as allies for choppy angels.

I'm not sure I could handle the idea of painting 100 guardsmen, though.

DKoK looks awesome. I haven't seen the rules. But model-wise it's just nok going to happen.
