EVENT: Pride of the Guard

Captain Caine, where did you get that column? It's great!

I've heard that columns/pillars for (wedding) cakes are great for terrain but I've never been able to find any. Specialist shops I guess...

I've finished the stonework and scrolls on mine. I'll be starting the bronze today.

Thanks warriorfish, and your right about the cake columns. They are actually really cheap on Amazon.com (like $3-5 per pack of 5). I've had decent results using plaster and easy/quick mold to cast some duplicates that can be carved up for terrain fairly easily. But I also learned that plaster doesn't work great for bases as it's brittle, though display boards can be ok. So I have two sizes here (weird bundle of magnetized space marine arms for scale)http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a243/CaptainKarlean/dec%207%2015%20004_zpsxbdntc2p.jpg

So far the statue is coming along, but at this point I'm going to have to admit I've never done oxidized copper... a really watered down sotek green appears to be working so far. I went with the obligatory blown-off arm on the standard bearer (I'd estimate a good 68% of all 40k soldiers carrying the colors into battle lose an arm and keep fighting). I now think should have taken the time to put a greenstuff tourniquet on there. Having three guys on a base also got me thinking about a cool homebrew/counts as commander using the three models to represent three wounds/attacks. Then again it might just confuse everyone.

Nice work!

I got a lot done on mine today.

med_gallery_63428_6841_30941.jpgmed_gallery_63428_6841_99717.jpg

Still to do:

script on scrolls,

weathering powders on everything,

gold on the aquila someone has left on the base,

leaves,

posters.

Should have it finished in a day or two :)

I'll be grabbing some paints today so I'll be able to start painting soon. Still no sign of a suitable base but there's time for something to spring out on me :)

Get some cheese.

Some Camembert.

If you find the container no good for a base at least you enjoyed the cheese while thinking where else to find a base.

I really need to sort my work time out, daylight fades so I stop painting... but then I'm stuck with taking a picture in poor light tongue.png I'll work on that but for now here he is:

gallery_30308_10604_17186.jpg

You can't quite see it but I'm really pleased with how the bronze came out and the subtle verdigris - so subtle the picture doesn't bring any out laugh.png He can count as finished if I'm unable to source a base I like. I'm sure I've got something suitable around somewhere.

Do you have any square WHFB bases lying about? If you had three...glue two top-to-top and the third base-to-base onto one of the first two you'd have a little plinth. Perhaps sandpaper the rough texture off the top then paint it marble...

Or do it with round bases even.

Monument to General Charles Kierdale III

Hidden Content
Erected after his fall, which brought an end to the Infernumundi Campaign, the monument to general Charles Kierdale III was built in the Citizens’ Square in the capital of Kierdale’s Shrineworld to commemorate the 12 worlds conquered by the 49th Expeditionary Force under his command. The granite cylinder was laser-cut from the volcanic plains upon which the final battle took place and inlaid with a single silver-tipped bronze artillery shell for each of the worlds conquered in the name of the Golden Throne:

Chyror

Duenth II, III and V

Nalung 7

Tonis Secundus

Therwor Beta and Gamma

The orbital cities of Cedicu

Bryceport

Geldfen II

and finally Infernumundi itself.

The statue of general Kierdale is cast of bronze mined on those conquered planets where it could be mined, and was forged on the shrineworld itself, picts taken by imbedded scriveners providing the inspiration for the statue’s pose: depicting the general as he ordered the final assault against the Greenskin horde from the cupola of his Baneblade command tank. The massive skull of the Ork warboss slain at the end of the offensive is mounted upon the monument between the general’s statue and an Aquila and Imperial Guard emblem toward the rim.

The monument to General Charles Kierdale III is a common place of prayer for the families of those serving offworld with the shrineworld’s regiments, with offerings of flowers, food and alcohol often left at its base and prayer sheets and entreaties to Him upon the Golden Throne often stuck to its sides.

If I have time at the weekend I'll take some photos with models around it.

I haven't had chance to check if the link still works, but I got the posters long ago...Here.

An excellent completion, but we'd expect no less from a former commissar msn-wink.gif It's the extra details in model and fluff that I really like thumbsup.gif

My plan is to get mine done over the weekend, not sure if I'll get time before then but I've only the base and a few details to do. Oh and the background but I already know what I want to write, just need to do it tongue.png

Nice job :) the details like the 21 shells and the fact you named all 21 worlds is great. If you were ever to go back to it then a plaque for each planet name might be good around the sides to create more points of interest?

I didn't have any hobby nights scheduled within the timeframe for this challenge but have been inspired to add a statue to my list of projects just for coolness, cheers :)

Radu, now I'm finished you suggest that?! :D

It's an excellent idea. A plaque for each planet and underneath scribblescript columns for the names of those who gave their lives...

Perhaps I'll add those details in the future. I think I'd need to remove the posters to get the plaques in the right places.

Hmmm, I couldn't make out the description on the statue, but scouts recovered this. It looks like it commemorates a planetary assault of some kind.

****8135999.M41 [REDACTED] SYSTEM RECLAMATION CAMPAIGN—ENGAGEMENT [+ 18 HOURS]—REPORT: URGENCY OMEGA—GOVERNOR MILITANT [REDACTED] DECLARED EXCOMMUNICATE TRATORIS****

For the record I do attest that I, Colonel Helschtag Van Buren, acting commander, XXIV Reg., became personally involved in the disastrous events explicated herein.

Full planetary assault was imminent and inescapable. The Imperial Guard, numbering in the tens of thousands mustered for the call to war of the most vicious kind. Regiment upon regiment marched in lock step down gargantuan corridors before landing craft and inevitable death. Each weapon was perfectly maintained, magazines loaded, and cartridges accounted for.

Thousands of support crew and technicians maneuvered amongst each other with growing urgency in final preparation for the assault. The parade deck was alit with the cacophony of an inconceivable sea of moving parts and men—the sound nearly deafening. The servos of titanic bulk loaders engaged, each priming apocalyptic payloads of irredeemable destruction. Boots struck metal grating in unison, and commanders with great bullhorns issued ceaseless commands of duty and death. Towering some 200 feet above the decking stood dozens of pulpits of palpable and exceeding magnificence, each a testament to humanity’s long faded resplendent age. Despite the breathtaking magnitude of the ship, Lord Commissars and Arch-Confessors alike radiated unadulterated intimidation and pure malevolence. Each preached fanatical sermons, blessing the damnation of this planet and thanking the Emperor for this opportunity to die in his name. In the armory nearby, Legiones... [page incomplete]

Great work, Mandaloriano and Captain Caine :tu:

I wonder how many more completions we'll have before the end? :)

You've already got me wanting to make more. Some busts using those never-used bitz from Chimera/Russ kits...

I'm going to have to bow-out of this challenge due to my stupid health sad.png. I blame Nurgle for giving me yet another genetic disease.

Everyone's stuff is looking real great, though. Maybe next time I can join in when my fingers don't look like pin cushions.

That day was the last day of battle for Uralia. But noone knew that victory was so close. It was going to be just one more day in trenches in frosen plains. It was the same as any of 543 days before. Cultists were coming. Guardsmen were killing them. Demonic machines were pouring death on 1st Nubilan. Vega's flyboys were destroying those warp monstrosities. Everything was like a day, and a day, and a hundred days before. Until it started snowing. When the whole planet looks like a glacier, snow is not something that surprises you. But a deamon with enormous blood-stained axe in hand riding on a demonic beast coming out of blizzard surely will be something you were not going to meet after breakfast. And the thing was not alone. Cultists, demon-posessed machines, and warp beasts were not going to miss the fight.

Air support became unavailable because of weather. Artillery was still firing, and it could be enough to stop incoming attack. But it was too many of the heretics today. And the massacre began. Defence lines were fighting hard but still were destroyed one by one. Heretics lost many but there were still enough of them to continue their advance. And their losses seemed to be only inspiring them. That was the time when skies brightend and the snow stopped. Artillery fired all at once. Air support was on route. For a moment it looked like a victory. But when smoke and snow dispersed demons were still there. The one with axe was laughing so loud that artillery crews could hear. And more cultists waves were coming to their aid in distance. There were no time to reload artillery guns. Air crafts were not going to come in time to save the men on the ground. Demons were already too close. And they were going to attack. At this moment of dispair a lone figure rised from ashes and remains of fallen gurdsmen behind the demon rider.  All covered with blood of his fallen comrades and grime he himself looked like a demon. He rose his lasgun with bayonet fixed and ran towards the laughing abomination. He jumped on the demonic steed and stabbed its' rider in the neck. Gurgling roar came on place of laugh. The fiend was struggling to take the lasgun out of his flesh. The man fall down from the steed's back and demons pounced on him and tore him apart. That delay was enough to reload artillery. And guardsmen could hear approaching air support.

At the next few moments the area where warp beasts were standing turned into inferno. Noone and nothing came out of smoke and fire.

Cultists turned and ran back. And the war became a purification mission.

None of the gurdsmen could say who exactly was the guy who saved the day. The priests were telling that it was the Emeror's will in flesh. Guardsmen were trying to find the remains of the hero or at least his dog-tags but there were so many laying around in the snow and ash. That is why on the top of the Bed of honor blank dog-tags were left.
