Thanks for the kind words everyone, I appreciate the feedback!

I’ve been pretty busy over the last few weeks. There’s quite a few projects on the work bench for the recon company at the moment. I managed to snap a few WIP shots of my work, I will try and add more as I complete units:

Early pic of my deathstorm pod:

I used a template to keep the hazard stripes as uniform as possible.

Exterior of the pod before the oil wash:

It looks pretty shiny at this stage, essentially it’s a black undercoat, Tamiya T40 metallic black spray, Vallejo metallic black highlights, tamiya clear blue glaze, tamiya clear black glaze over the lower aspects. The decals are still drying in the pic, hence the odd colour opacity change under the decal. But as the microsol drys, this effect resolves itself.

Exterior post oil wash:

As you can see, the oil wash makes a big difference, it still needs a Matt coat of varnish to take a bit more of the gloss finish off.

Finally, I’m working on five headhunters. They are the same as my seekers in design, so I can use them as either in a list. There will be two mars pattern heavy bolters and two sergeants with power gloves (to take advantage of the power daggers).

Here’s a quick shot of one at the post oil wash stage:

More pics to come!

Cheers chaps!

Well, the deathstorm drop pod is complete! Getting the right finish on this dark metallic scheme has been a real pain, but I think I’ve finally cracked it!

If I see another drop pod, it will be too soon....

More completions this evening!

Five more Effrit, armed with heavy bolters and a couple of sergeants. They will allow me to use the seekers (shown a few pages ago) as headhunters. I just love the look of the Mars pattern heavy Bolter!

A few (perhaps a lot) of close ups:

You're a skilled painter. The Legion markings are EXTREMELY difficult to see on the dark armor, but as these models are Alpha Legionnaires, I suppose this was intentional.

Cheers, yes that was the intention, the photos seem to have come out quite grainy, not sure why. In reality, it really depends how much light hits the armour plate, the decals have a different reflective property to the base armour, so they stand out more. In low light, they look almost black....

Top notch work on the Seekers, the lenses from the drop pod are very nicely done too.

Thanks Pearson. The machine spirit is the best part of the deathstorm kit!

So, the next unit for my recon company will be a squad of outriders, equipped with twin linked melta guns and melta bombs they will add some much needed AT to the list. Interestingly they will have a 2+ Jink save turn one thanks to the benefits of the Row.

These guys have been on the shelf for a while, I think I bought them back in 3rd edition! I found myself with five spare breacher heads and I was inspired to use the models to make a Mk3 outrider unit. The list of upgrade parts is pretty long, kromlech legionary bike legs, raven wing handle bars and arms, scout bike front armour, melta guns from the legionary kit, FW melta bombs, breacher squad heads, mk3 torsos and backpacks! Plus a few details!

Snapped a few pics before I start painting them in earnest:

I really enjoy breathing life into some of the old kits, I think I spent about

That not black finish is absolutely superb. How do they look on the table top? I'd imagine the effect gets lost a bit from a distance? The drop pod is excellent btw.

Thanks mate. Like any miniature the detail is lost a little during a game. I like to think the detail draws you in, as you get closer to the model you appreciate it more. The metallic blue/black effect depends heavily on the lighting. As the light hits the armour plate you get a nice reflective dark blue, in lower light it’s more green/black. Which is how I imagined the alpha legion stealth scheme!

I’m taking them to a gaming evening with a few HH players, I’ll try and snap some half decent pics of them in action!

Nice. The fairing is from the scout bike, right?

You are correct sir, it’s the grenade launcher version as the weapon mounting was slightly wider, so easier to fit the melta guns through.

Well, base metallics are down on the bikes, now for the next step!
