Had a very fun time getting these painted. I feel that I have my progression down pretty well and can start cranking out the units at a faster pace. All of these have at least one magnetized arm at the shoulder and/or wrist. It took some tinkering to get the jet pack heat exhaust look the way I wanted it, but am very pleased with the results. Also the heat bloom in the power weapons was also a challenge well met and was a good run at some hack & slash wet blending. Still loving the Molotow chrome pens.

I have to say, I was going to go with another chapter for my Primaris (well at least the first set, I've traded off the DG side for another Primaris set and am going off the deep end http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/334703-primal-marines/), but I decided to keep it in the family. Got some good ideas on how to wrap them into the Crusade after I took in all the new lore from the 8th edition book which will be following this post in short order.

Any thoughts and C&C always welcome!

Really like what youve done to them. Interesting use  of the decorative sword as well. Question: where is the helm that the rightmost Primaris has, from?

I'm actually not sure at all! I got it in a bits swap and made a bunch of copies because I liked it so much. Someone on here will probably recognize it though...

Stormtalon IIB "Bulwark"

- Mobile Fire Support Emplacement -

Tactical Relevance:

Mobile infantry cover system and fire support. Advance recon, tactical redeployment of cover for advancing infantry, covering fire for infantry already in the battlespace. For example, providing cover and fire support for infantry deploying from an LRC spearhead in open ground.

Version A

Stormraven wing assmebly + Drop pod doors

Flight Mode:

Forward Profile:

Bulwark Mode - Hover / Cover Mode:http://i.imgur.com/3jREEip.jpg

Forward Profile:

Version B "Flipside"

Stormtaven wing assembly + inverted drop pod doors

Alt wing armored canards arrangement:

Version C "Forget the whole cover thing and just make it look cooler"

Drop pod doors

http://i.imgur.com/5dtPMyF.jpg

Overall I really like version A. Additional things that it will be getting:

- Additional engine bits to reflect the extra power needed to drive the larger wings

- Modular canopy armor

- Magnetized wings to allow return to regular Stormtalon configuration.

Things I'm thinking about:

- Wing mounted Assault Cannons that can also rotate up so the infantry taking cover can use it as a gun emplacement.

- I have 5 Stormtalons so I think I wanted to do 3x that can convert to the Bulwark config and the other two get permanently converted to Ver C because it looks cool.

As always any C&C is welcome and appreciated, thanks for looking!

Ok, that's some serious "outside the box" thinking going on. I like that.  :)

My initial thought are:

Version A: I like the profile view as it strikes me as very "Predator UAV/Global Hawk" like in concept. Something that has a high loiter time and provides a lot of supporting firepower to ground units.

However, I'm not as sold on the top view just yet.

Like others, I think Version C makes the most sense. One of the things I noticed about my Ghost Talon conversions is that extending the wings really helps the overall look of the ST, as it stretches the...span of the wings and causes it to look more "flyable".

Also, Version C looks more like an attack craft and would even let you get away with all those guns mounted on the cheeks and chin. If I was going to do this, and I might because it's a great idea overall, I'd go with the DP doors, cut off the hinge rollers (the part closest to the engine nacelles) and attach those wings directly to the engines. I like the downward cant to the wing line a lot.

What I'm not clear on just yet is the tail. I like what I can see now, but haven't figured out how you got there. I can see that you took either two ST or SR tail pieces and glued them to your horizontal stabilizer, but I'm not sure about the other part.

I like how it is shaped from the top view, but uncertain how much it extends the main fuselage. I think that is important to the overall lines.

So a request, if you have the time. Could you take some shots of the rear tail piece and also describe how you built it? It's very interesting looking, and I mean that in a good way.

Cheers,

Version A: stealthy high-atmosphere strikes; someone mentioned the UAV, the wings visually recall a real bird gliding at high altitude.

Version C: Astartes-pattern death, delivered straight to Xenos teeth. Reminds me of an Apache; so I can't vote any other way, especially with the prospect of the additional weaponry.

Thanks for the feedback! Version C is growing on me as well. Also less work. But what to do with these extra SR wings....

@ Honda - I'll be sure to take other angles of that tail for you. It's a combination of IG Valkyrie + Stormtalon tails.

Assorted Musings and Auxiliary Schematics

Brother Honda, per request here's some other angles of the tail section and a breakdown of the parts. It's the tailfin and stabilizers from an IG Valkyrie kit with two Stormtalon tails on either side. I am working on something to further support the tail section coming out from where the original tail ends. Probably just an angled bit of plasticard should do, or perhaps an auxiliary booster? Not sure. Also debating to just using some plasticard or modeling some ailerons or probes on the areas of the tail section that break the profile along the leading edge.

Also mocked up a variation the the Melta gunner for an LRC crew. I imagine this one as a techmarine who zealously defends the LRC to which he's assigned. Working on extending the cabling from the melta and the back of the torso into the LRC cabin.

And last, but certainly not least - this was the result of an intensive search for a certain model. A lot of my design references are informed from the anime I saw in the late 80's. Specifically, Macross (Robotech), Akira, and in this instance - Venus Wars. TL:DR - race bike/gang kids living on terraformed Venus get recruited into the army during a period of unrest. They have these awesome "monobikes" that are single wheel fast attack vehicles. I always thought they would make great scout bikes for 40k because I've always been unimpressed with the scout bike model itself. Removing a couple of armor plates and throwing a cargo bag on the back does not constitute a scout bike. My Templars can do better!

 http://i.imgur.com/CmvFyCD.jpg

Unable to find the model at the right scale and price, I did come across something related. I think it works well and I am happy with how the scout biker from the kit fits. I just bent the legs at the knees slightly (and might bend them a bit more)s. The profile sits higher than the regular attack bike, but I think it is fitting a scout vehicle - all engine, low armor, high maneuverability and capable of handling rough terrain at speed.

More pics to come, didn't have much time last night to mess around in the workshop.

On and one last thing. That Venus Wars movie - highly suggest it to anyone who hasn't seen it and can actually find it - has one of my first and more beloved badass female characters, Miranda, leader of the Killer Commandos biker gang...

I might copy the Drop Pod Doors idea to my Stormhawks... I haven't even unboxed those yet and I already didn't like the small stubby wings on them... I elongated the wings on my Stormtalons too, but not to your extent, and mainly because I see Talons as the Attack Choppers while Hawks would be my Fighter/Bomber... funny enough, I used Drop Pod parts too for the Talon wing extensions :p

My first game in over ten years! Ran the first week Konor campaign scenario. Just did a 1,000 point game with 3 crusader squads, 2 razorbacks, one sword brethren assault squad with jetpacks, EC & Helbrecht. It was a resounding defeat at the hands of some Necron Destroyers (those things put out a staggering amount of damage), but I'm well on my way to getting back into fighting shape for a tournament over Labor Day. 1-2 games a week against random opponents at the various Warhammer and FLGS in the area during the Konor campaign should be good practice.

Moments from the game:

- Helbrecht disembarking from a Razorback about to be blown up by Immortals, charges a unit of four Canoptek Wraiths (I think that's what they were called) with a crusader squad and melts face with the 7 attacks on the charge and blows through them like paper.

- The unfortunate aforementioned RB got locked up in close combat on turn one, but managed to kill a Wraith after rolling boxcars in close combat after spending a command point to fight first.

- EC failed his first charge, but eventually shrugging off a staggering amount of shots, getting toe to toe with the Necron warlord, who summarily ran away with one wound left and let his infantry shoot the EC to pieces. Typical coward xeno.

Heading into a nice juicy 5 hour session tonight. Training wheels are coming off, I'm throwing weight of my painted forces at this one. Here's the lists I've built up. It's open night at the FLGS (first time at this one) so I have no idea what I'll be playing. I've been fielding just my (mostly) painted units of the army aside from one or two indivdual models. Lists were put together in Battlescribe, which I'm still getting used to using so there's probably a couple of errors in here that I'm not seeing. Also please note that my Grimaldus isn't ready yet that is why he is not present in the 2000 point lists. Any and all C&C welcome!

Played a 1000 pt game against Orks.

Short version... I killed this many:

http://i.imgur.com/OuAZjBA.jpg

Long Version:

Deployment

Played the week 2 Konor campaign mission, xenos defending against the Templars. Opponent has a big blob of Boyz & Nobz, some gretchin, a Trukk with two warchief guys and a banner orc in it and a 'Copter thing. Deployed the EC, Captain and VV squad far forward with the Crusader squad behind cover in the center of the deployment zone and the Contemptor just outside the center field 9" bubble. Terminators stay in reserve. Playing it safe as my first two games last week went badly due to over-aggressive placement.

http://i.imgur.com/4ulr2qO.jpg

Turn 1

All units advance. Contemptor gets LOS on the big blob, gets first blood and takes three boys off the table. Terminators teleport strike in a bottle neck and funnel straight into the Gretchin. They'll spend the remainder of the game locked in close combat here after charging. He loses most of the Gretchin, and the rest to morale. I lose two Terminators in CC and more Orcs of various, but completely meaningless categories fall to a chorus of Thunderhammers.

http://i.imgur.com/nmdAkqv.jpg

Turn 2

The CC slog in the containers continues, no further losses as the Terminators tank enough shots & chops that I lose count. The Orc 'Copter deploys on the flank, just close enough that the Contemptor moves within 12", shoots the hell out of it, charges and rips it apart in CC. EC & VV charge successfully, but the Captain with them fails (it WAS an 11" charge, but ya have to try). EC melts face for one phase before the entire mob turns their attention to him and falls to the weight of dice. The Crusader squad in the backfield continue to advance but are still well out of the fight. The Contemptor, incensed at the death of the EC, cries havoc.

Turn 3

The Contemptor shoots the rest of the Boyz mob into pulp. The Warchief charges the Contemptor but is annihilated by overwatch. By the end of Turn 3, I have over 20 victory points for each enemy unit killed, and the Orc player concedes with the Chaplain beating the Trukk into scrap with his Crozius.

Major victory for the Silent Sword Crusade with the Konor Week 4 mission vs. Night Lords

I've been working up to playing against the local heretics, and today the dice and Emperors favor shone it's light upon this Crusade.

Here's the list, just shy of 2000

++ Battalion Detachment ++

+ HQ +

Captain : Master-crafted boltgun, Power sword, The Crusader's Helm

Lieutenant : Master-crafted boltgun, Power sword

+ Troops +

Crusader Squad
. 7x Initiate w/ BP, CS & grenades
. Sword Brother: Plasma pistol, Power sword

Crusader Squad
. 7x Initiate w/ BG, BP & grenades
. Sword Brother: Plasma pistol, Power sword

Scout Squad : 5x Camo cloak
. Scout Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Sniper rifle
. 4x Scout w/Sniper Rifle

+ Elites +

Contemptor Dreadnought : Combi-bolter, Dreadnought combat weapon, Kheres pattern assault cannon

+ Heavy Support +

Land Raider Crusader : 2x Hurricane bolter, Multi-melta, Twin assault cannon

Relic Leviathan Dreadnought : 2x Heavy flamer, Leviathan siege claw, Meltagun, Storm cannon array

++ Air Wing Detachment  ++

Stormraven Gunship : Twin lascannon, Twin multi-melta, Two Hurricane Bolters, Two Stormstrike Missile Launchers

Stormtalon Gunship : Twin assault cannon, Typhoon missile launcher x2

TURN 1

Templars (attackers) deploy along the foward line of the deployment zone. The Stormraven with Contemptor, Snipers, Cap & Lieutenant goes far left, Stormtalon 1 goes mid, Stormtalon 2 goes right. Levi goes mid field to approach straight in against enemy Contemptor. LRC deploys midfield at max capacity. Per mission rules attackers go first. One Stormtalon goes 40 across the field get LOS on heretic rhinos. The other Stormtalon moves 20 midfield. Levi and LRC move up. Stormtalons take some shots on rhinos and take one down to half strength with a really good roll with the AC and another with Krak missiles. LRC vaporizes a two creature squad of some demon thing with combined AC & HC fire. Night Lord character with a jump pack and warp talons deploy just outside of 9 from the Levi. They charge, the character fails the charge (opposing player spent a CP to reroll - failed again ++THE EMPEROR PROTECTS++) and the warp talons lose 3 from a strong overwatch roll with the Storm array and melta. They lose another 3 from counterattack. I officially have a distraction carnifex on the field.

BONUS ZEAL POINTS - Levi denied a smite attack.

TURN 2

LRC deploys the shooty Crusader squad with the Stormraven deploys snipers, Cap & Lieutenant. Stormtalon in the backfield goes into hover and pops a rhino and kills two NL tacticals in the process, the other Stormtalon took some hits turn 1 from the rhinos and falls back to get some range and shoots at the heretic Contemptor that has comes out of cover. Snipers shave a wound off a Chaos Lord in cover. Hellbrute comes out from cover and positions itself for a charge at the Crusaders & LRC. NL Tartaros Termies deepstrike with intent to charge the Levi. Levi gets locked up in CC (again). Warptime shenanigans gets the enemy Contemptor into charging range and makes it but loses 3 wounds to another scathing overwatch.

EXTRA BONUS ZEAL POINTS - Levi denies another smite attack.

TURN 3

Snipers move up and shoot again at Chaos Lord, get 2 sixes and manages to fail one of the saves, thus costing the NL player another CP to reroll and save. His CPs are burning up, having tried to interrupt the Levi CC to little or no effect in the previous turn. Combined fire from the LRC, Crusader squad, Cap & Lieutenant bring the Hellbrute down. Stormtalon takes a few more of the disembarked NL tacticals down. NL Chaos Lord charges, the Sword Brother overcharges his plasma pistol for overwatch, rolls a one, Cap gives the reroll, rolls a one. Goes boom. I lose four initates to CC, the rest to morale.

TURN 4

Snipers advance to just short of the edge of the battlefield to get my VP for the "Breakthrough" rule on the mission rules. Second Crusader squad disembarks to take on the Chaos Lord, Cap & Lieutenant stay within 6" of everyone. Contemptor moves into charging range of the NL tacticals left over from the popped Rhino. Both Stormtalons stay in hover and shift to get better LOS on rhinos. Levi has one wound left and is still in CC with the NL Contemptor and four Tartaros Termies. Shooting takes the NL Chaos Lord down. Contemptor charges the NL tacticals and they fold. Levi pops the NL dread in CC but it does not explode. NL moves in with remaining infantry and rhinos to try and block my troops from moving off the field without taking casualties or slow them down to get the Raptors in range. Stormtalons go down from combined fire and psychic tomfoolery (no CP left at this point). Tartaros Termies finally pop the Levi, but in his dying moments overloads the reactor and explodes, killing one more Tartaros Termie, and taking wounds off two other NL characters. Two rhinos charge the Contemptor but one pops from overwatch and the other only has three wounds left. The two remaining NL Termies charge the LRC and fall to overwatch.

NL player fails roll, the game continues.

TURN 5

Snipers move off the field, Contemptor falls back off field. Crusader squad moves off field. Cap and Lieutenant stay at the field edge to try and pop the last rhino, which they do. LRC moves to the edge of the field. Stormraven keeps taking shots at stuff and shaves off the rest of the troops and a couple raptors. I could have tabled the NL crew but it's too much of a gamble so I hope he fails his turn roll. The rest of his remaining forces try to shoot down the Stormraven, which has been in hover mode for two turns, but only end up scratching the paint.

NL player fails roll, the game continues

TURN 6

HQ & LRC move off field. Stormraven disengages and moves off field. The game concludes.

RESULTS:

My PL level of the troops that made it through is more than 1/3 of my total PL, I gain a major victory.

LRC, SR and Dreads pulled their weight handily. Keeping the HQ close to the LRC and Crusader squads was essential. I've like to see that whenever I put the Relic Leviathan down on the field it almost always generates the, "Well I guess that answers the question of what I shoot at first", response. The NL player was severely lacking in anti-armor and he paid for it in spades.

Anyone here know how to post 360 photos in the B&C?

Fellow Brethren. I'm playing a large point game - 5,000 per player to be more precise, at a local 'Con that is running an Apoc style game. There is also an ITC tourney happening as well but I kind of want to have fun and not stress out knowing I have to finish the game in 2.5 hours. This gave me a few realizations...

1. I actually have more than 5,000 point of painted templars when I started adding everying up. That's a good feeling!

2. I've never played a game this big before. It is going to be safe to assume there are going to be Knights (and I don't have any Knights of my own to counter them at the moment) of various flavors, possible Warhounds or worse, Monstrous things, etc, etc... so in a "P vs. E" kind of mentality, would it make more sense to use lots of armor with high AP and try to capitalize on the Linebreaker and Killshot stratagems for the first few turns to whittle down big baddies? OR Something more high mobility and go with lots of Land Speeders, Bikes and deep striking Sword Brethren.

Any and all advice is greatly welcomed. I will be documenting the event in depth so expect a pic heavy update of what hopefully is an epic game this weekend!

This is what 5,000 points of Templars look like. I was very excited to be able to put this much on the table.

TURN 1 - Everyone has a section of table to either attack or defend. VPs for taking skull objectives. It was my first time taking on demons such as these, and many of them. Here's how it looked like after the opening charge, since he literally had no guns it really made playing him simple, no shooting phase or overwatch from any of his units! But holy hell do they hit hard. I got to shoot at him with everything I had while his Bloodthirsters and characters (Angron as Chaos Lord and Skarbrand) soaked up Lascannon fire until they got in range to start hacking away at the troops. I move my flyers to the other side of the board to support deep striking Terminators to draw off as much of the charge so it doesn't hit the main force all at once. The Vindicators are screening for the Warlord Titan.

These were the guys to the left of me who were facing the Warlord pictured in my previous post.

And over to the right was the Alpha Legion and a bunch of allied Knights:

TURN 2: The demons are officially in CC range and start swinging. The Dreads try to slow down Angron so the Warlord and chip away at him. Skarbrand and the Bloodletters come in hard but everything shooting is chipping off wounds, keeping Captains by the armor for rerolls is invaluable for the Predators and Crusaders. Bloodcrushers and other riff raff start folding from combined fire. The Terminators do not fare as well and are pretty much reduced in one round of fighting.

TURN 3: Angron gets stomped to death by the Warlord, but not before he swipes his axes and pretty much pops all three Vindicators. Lots of fighting. Helbrecht and EC get down and dirty with a Bloodletter and Skarbrand, both coming out on top.

TURN 4: The game is winding down. The big nasty demons are all dead, but in technical terms I did nothing to move my opponents daemonkin off the objectives and literally have ZERO VPs, which I didn't really care about to begin with. So much fun playing a game this big!

It doesn't matter. The Templar objective is to slay ALL demons and heretics.

Very nice models btw
