[WIP]-Salamanders 55th Line Company

Recommended Posts

Greetings Brothers and Sisters.

Like many I am just boarding the hersey train. After much soul searching I couldn't move myself away from the Sons of Vulkan and have decided to start a 30K army in addition to my 40K one I have.

I picked up the BaC box at Xmas, and after picking up other goodies from the web I am ready to start my 30K journey.

Planning on creating 2 tac squads, vet sqaud w/Heavy flamers, plus termies and dread and kit bash the praetor a touch to make him less generic. Then finally I will covert the chaplain to represent Nomus Rhy'tan.

I have just finished converting a Librarian clam pack to a Sallies Libby w/jump pack. With bits I had lying around and some freebies I got from spellcrow.

Got a half baked idea on comapny fluff and markings but i'll pad that out another day.

I've also been testing out possible paint schemes which you can see below (sorry lighting wasn't great). Both are FW nocturne green base, then FW vulkan green highlights. The left head had a Biel-tan green wash while the right an athonian camoshade. Both then had further highlights with vulkan green and straken green.

This second photo just show the above heads after a cassandra yellow wash.

I'm flip-flopping on the colours at the minute. The left hand one with the Biel-Tan green wash is my favourite today. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for looking, apologies about the brain dump of a first post.

That Libby there is looking very fine ! Baked to see the rest of your army as it comes together !

Both colours look nice, but the second picture's slightly too bright to tell with certainty.

Thanks for the comments guys.

That's a idea great SavationofReason, was just going to run with different coloured face plates, but will marry that with the drab style green. Thanks for that.

Charlo, true the power weapon does look a little large. But wanted it to look like a lance. Kind of imagined him dropping from the sky to impale the traitors like a medieval jouster.

I love the Libby but I feel his weapon is just a TAD too big... But It does look awesome still!

I too thought that he must be overcompensating for something.

The hooded helmet looks good on him, I'm not so fond of Spellcrow's JP design. the air intake should be wider than the exhaust.

I think the librarians weapon would look better if you replaced the big blade with the small blade and left the other end bare,

And it might just be the picture, but it looks like there is quite a gap between the salamander hide and the groin, which I think shouldn't be there.

Thanks for the comments guys. I see the libbies pike isn't to everyones tastes.

Been running a test model over the last couple of days. Went with, nocturne green, then vulkan green, biel tan green wash, with highlights in straken and nurgling green. Still got a way to go on the pads etc but you can get the idea. Interested to hear your thoughts.

I like it! The green looks a bit "dusty" but it works very well. I also like the full yellow right shoulder pad, i'd leave it without flame motifs, as it's quite unique from usual salamanders. It could mean an ancient alliance with an imperial fists company? In any case, complicated motifs often work best when used sparingly.

On the other hand, I'd suggest adding a bit more colour to the bottom of the legs and to the backpack, to avoid the green blocks looking monotone...

That green is lovely, a great shade that's not too dark.

I will keep an eye on this, the Librarian caught my interest, nice use of the diiferent kits there.

I agree with Lord Thørn on the yellow shoulder pad, I would say leave it as it is, it looks great

Maybe some squad insignias on it instead of flames?

@lord thorn @brother callius, thanks for the comments. The green is close to my 40k sallies, but not so close to make them different. The legs will end up with some free hand scales and bronzing on the studs. I was going to add a flame motif on the right shoulder guard going from , orange through the reds. Also considering brightening up the yellow too, it's currently averland sunset.

@polemarch. Yup that's were the design idea came from (image in massacre). Thought behind the company heraldry is the first captain of the company was Terran (survived the manticore cataclysm and antaem ). His heraldry had the santurine Rams yellow pads, the captain eventually died in battle defending the people of aethonian. As a mark of respect the company continue to carry his colours.

First marine of many is complete. I've left this guy reasonable basic, no flames (I'll use that as mark of being "forged in battle"). So this guy is a new recruit to the 55th. I left the pads a dull yellow, a) the flat smooth finish looked good b) I hate painting yellow my worry was another coat in a brighter colour would look awful. You can see some scales on the right knee that will run through the company, not my best work however. Any thoughts, critisms are welcome.

Thanks for the comments guys. The scales look better on camera than they do to the eye.

Glorious, I love the base and yellow pads.

Yellow really goes well with Sallies.

From whence did the base cometh? DIY or bought?

The bases are a DIY job. Model railway cork (1/8 gauge i think).

No update for a month. Been adding further members of the 55th. First tac squad complete, thought I would share these more unique models. Hopefully get down to some painting this month.

This is my take on Nomus Rhy'tan

Looking very promising, the vets. Nomus is great, though the angle of the photo makes for a less than stellar viewing of the model.. The Cataphractii Praetor looks good, but I struggle with disassociating the shield from its Lizardmen-origins, which detracts slightly from a great bit of modelling ingeneuity unfortunately.

Edit: remember spacing...

Update time. I've completed my vow for the Casual Hobby Challengethis month. This gives 6 completed marines.

gallery_72518_11677_512.jpg

As you can probably see I have been light on the flames and heavy on scales (in comparison). I'll be using flames as a honorific denoting forged in the fires of battle. So any marines that have seen combat with the 55th they are allowed to bear flames on their armour. As you can see this squad is mostly rookies.

Also further reinforcements have arrived.
