Formations

Firstly, my heartfelt apologies if this has come up before (doubtless it has) - I do not mean to waste anyone's time but Searchy is not working for me for some unknown reason.

So, the formations from Codex: Space Marines - can Blood Angels use 'em? I don't mean things like the Siegebreaker Cohort or the AA Defence Force since Angels don't have 'Talons or AA tanks. I more lean towards ones such as the Suppression Force or the LR Spearhead. I ask purely because there is some confusion within my group - some say no and yet others say yes; pointing to the RG formations as proof whilst observing nothing such as a Faction is mentioned on the Marine Formation pages.

But even if not, since Marines and BA are battle brothers, I can put Death Co. and Assault Termies in Marine 'Raiders, yes?

We can use any Formation we want. We can even use Tyranid and Chaos Foayions when we create an army should we desire to.

However, all Formations retain their parent Faction. In short, any Formation(s) we use from C:SM stays Faction Space Marines and so on.

As for you last question, provided the Land Raider is not a Dedicated Transport and empty, then yes you can (not together, obviously!).

The thing that confuses people about the Raven Guard formations is that it doesn't specify you need to have the Raven Guard Chapter Tactics used for them, only for their Decurion. That's what they mean by "any Chapter can use them". Unfortunately, this means we can't use the Formations with Blood Angels rules, but there's nothing stopping you taking a Skyhammer Orbital Strike Force alongside a Blood Angels CAD, it's just that the Skyhammer will have to pick Chapter Tactics like any other Codex Marines force.

Edit: actually, reading the exact wording, there's no question that this is the correct interpretation. Both the White Scars and Raven Guard sections start with "the (appropriate Decurion) presented on these pages is unique to the White Scars/Raven Guard, but the Formations on the following pages can be used by any army chosen from Codex: Space Marines". So no, absolutely no argument can be made to use, for example, a Skyhammer Orbital Force using Dark Angels Tactical Marines etc. only units from Codex: Space Marines.

Simply put, the faction icon on the top of the formation indicates what army rule set is allowed to work with the formation.

So the general consensus is that you end up with "Red marines" for the models while using general Space Marine rules in a formation: you must use the rules in Codex Adeptus Astartes rather than those found in Codex Blood Angels.

Be that as it may, talk with your group and they may let you use BA codex rules with the formation. It's all negotiation now so if they let you, you can.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you have the units to fit it, I have no problem with you using it for Dark/Blood Angels. Hell, I wouldn't have much issue with someone using Chaos Marines/Raptors/Havocs in their place, and using them in a Chaos army. I've always much preferred the story behind a game, so if someone wants to make Sneaky Blood Angels using a Pinion Demi-Company, I'm inclined to let them.

Agreed. If we ever played, and you wanted to use the Formation with Codex: BA, I'd let you.

remeber though, we do have some suprisingly powerful formations when used well. Yeah it sucks we cant use formations from C:SM (or unit like talons, centurions etc) but the White Dwarf 374 Formations are pretty great, so there is that

I wasn't aware that 374 had any formations. Are we sure we aren't talking about WD 47?

WD374 Febuary 2011

Oh, I know which one you are referring to but what formations were in there? 2011 would have been before 6th edition so that would mean there was probably an apocalypse formation? I just don't know what formations you are talking about.

Google is coming up empty on exactly what was in this issue but there are plenty of pictures of what it looks like.

It had a death company one with a bunch if options that got various abilities and a Dante + units of sanguinary guard + honour guard that all got to charge from deep strike.

None of it is usable anymore (well - unless you and friends want to house rule some things)

Dante's SAnguine Host; Dante, 2-4 Sang Gaurd sqauds and an Honour Guard with Jump Pack sqaud. No scatter on deep strike. Can not shoot on deep srtike but cab charge.

Death Company: Astorath, 1+ Chaplains, 0-1 DC Tycho's, 3+ DC sqauds (one must have Lematrtes) 2-4 DC Dreads. Astorath is placed and scatterd as normal, all units are placed within 6 of astorath and scattered as noraml. Each unsaved wound causes another attack, if that attack cuased an unsaved wound you get a third attack and so on.

Firestorm Strike Force: Land Raider Redeemer, 2+ Baal Predators (everything must have the flamestrom cannons). All the units may choose to combined fire giving them a weapon profile of STR 6 AP3 Heavy 1 using the hellstorm template. Place the hellstorm template as if it were being fired from a torrent weapon.

Archangel Skyfroce: 3 Stormravens, 3 furioso Dreadnuaghts, 3 Terminator Sqauds. Everthing must start in the Ravens, Once per game all Stromravens can combine fire to shoot a range 24 STR8 Ap1 Heavy 1 7' Blast. After damage is resolved the storm ravens move flat out towards the target of the attack and all embarked units must disembark.

Good rules all of them but yes as I realised these are apocalypse formations, though all of these models still exist and have the same weaponry s currently so I see no reason why you couldnt use them in a game of apocalypse

Considering the wolves got an update, that is more akin to the new SM codex (complete with free transports), I rate we should see something this year, too.

Just a hunch.

True, but the thing that makes me say no is that it would require ANOTHER BA campaign supplement. We've already had one on "recent" times :(

Does anyone know if SW dreads got thier Attacks fixed?

I wouldn't mind another campaign. Perhaps they can do Shield of Baal 2: Electric Boogaloo and show what is happening on BAAL with the demon incursion. This would give them an opportunity to put in corrected unit entries.

However given that they didn't change SW scouts, not sure they would in such a campaign. Though if I remember correctly, SW had BS/WS 3 scouts since 3rd edition at least?

Well...

Let's hope so. Would love for us to get some actual game worthy formations and not stupidly unwieldy ones with no benefits.

Red Thirst, free (overcharged) transports and charge from Rhinos or something should be out bonuses. But we've discussed this at length before.

Are these formations legal?
