The rules for shattered legions have been leaked. Shattered legions basically allow us to make an army from 2 or more legions (don't know if there is a limit to that), so you can mix and match legion rules for what you want.

I like the idea of shattered legions, as now I can make an alpha legion infiltrating the raven guard army (Probably going with mostly Raven guard, but using skorr as my HQ). But the real reason I like the shattered legions is the modelling and conversion opportunities it allows, I see it allowing more personalised/fluffy legions then just relying on what forge world released.

I remember from the leaks that some of legion rules are conferred to all units, the main example being night vision. Alpha legion's mutable tactics was also mentioned as one of these, but I don't know if mutable tactics becomes an army wide buff. If it can, I can see mutable tactics being one of the abusive things if its available to all in a shattered legion.

Also, could you run 2 ROW if you take 2 praetors or delegatus?

Edit: I didn't make this thread, seems like the post above was deleted, can moderators move mine down? Thanks in advance.

shattered legions

  • must use legiones crusade army list
  • must contain at least two different legions or more
  • to take legion exclusive units, you must take a HQ choice from that legion
  • can't take primarchs or legiones(black shield) units
  • must declare if traitors or loyalists before game starts
  • while the warlord is alive, all legions in the force treat each other as sworn brothers, once the warlord dies, all legions treat each other as distrusted allies
  • no shattered legion units are denial
  • can use any generic rite of war, and has 3 rites of war for shattered legions, may also use the legion exclusive rites of the legion the warlord belongs to
  • certain legiones astartes rules are completely ignored (due to rules issues). list is proved in the rules. not going to bother repeating it here.
  • certain legiones astartes rules carry over to all friendly shattered legion units in the same detachment, list proved in rules
  • one rite of war is isstvan 5 survivors which makes tactical veterans troops, all marines gain hatred(traitor legions) and slay the warlord confers D3 VP rather than one. however must take 3 HQs, 1 iron hands, 1 raven guard and a salamander
  • other is for the traitors that hunted them down, recon squads are regular troops and seeker squads become non-compulsory troops, wiping out enemy units confer additional VP to regular mission objectives, D3 VPs if wiped out through a sweeping advance. also when rolling a 6 to outflank, you may choose any side, not just left or right.
  • the third rite of war, is actually one of the white scars which shattered legions can use as their own. will cover that one when i do the new legions.

For those who want the info...

White Scars / Shattered Legion unique Rite of War "The Sagyar Mazan"

- Units do not concede VPs for being destroyed on a 4-5. On a 6, you score a point.

- All models are Fearless during the first round of a combat.

- Must be Loyalists.

- Must have more Infantry than Vehicles.

- Must have a White Scars "Master of the Legion".

I want to just check I'm not being dim. If I take a Shattered Legions force, can I take marines from several legions as long as they're units from the LACAL book and not legion specific units without a HQ for said legion?

F'rex, can I have a White Scars warlord and unit, and take Ultramarines as long as I don't take Suzerains etc without a UM consul?

Interlocking Tactics extends to all Shattered Legions units in an army, and you lose Rigid Chain of Command. Iron Hands lose Rigid Tactics.

Iron Hands + Ultramarines looking pretty good right now.

Maybe some more piratical/pissed off members of the Nemesis Chapter banding up with Autek Mor's crazies. Really digging that idea.

Nope you must have a HQ choice for any models with any particular LA rule. So no Ultras at all unless you take a HQ with LA:Ultras first.

That's the way I read it anyway. Seems pretty clear.

This is correct. You must take a Praetor or Centurion (which may be a Consul) of each Legion you want to be included in your force.

This may include Special Characters, but there is a section strongly discouraging you from using characters such as Eidolon, Abaddon, etc as they are not generally associated with Shattered Legions. It doesn't say you can't, but it does say you should have a good reason :P Narrative gaming encroaching on the rules lol. Let's see how that goes.

oh my, This is pretty awesome I have to admit. I may just make a shattered legion list now. I'm imagining Nex (maybe saying he is a survivor/ stow away on a traitor ship my iron hands capture) and some mor dyneth/ Dark Furies teaming up with my iron hands commander.

The special rules section calls out Alvarex Maun & Kyr Vhalen as "good" Shattered Legion examples (which also means they are probably canonically alive, neat). So I imagine Nex would be fine. Just remember he's not your compulsory due to his Ill-omened rule so you'd need like Autek Mor (another example called out) or an Iron Hands Praetor or something to be your main Warlord.

Oh hey, also: Mutable Tactics does NOT confer unless your primary Warlord is Alpha Legion. On the flip side, Martial Hubris is the same. What this means is that Alpha Legion included in Shattered Legions are vanilla unless the Warlord is Alpha Legion.

edit: nix some of my thoughts, I don't know where I started thinking the LA rules except otherwise noted (Interlocking Tactics) would apply to the whole detachment.

2nd edit: noticed that they call out Saul Tarvitz could even be used as a SL character for "speculative battles..." where he lived. Implying he is in fact super dead. Ouch.

So with knowing enough of the new rules I'm trying to think of any combos worth taking. Basically you just have to take an HQ tax and you can take any corresponding legion units. I was thinking maybe Iron Hands warlord and vehicles and infantry with NLs terror squads or raptors? I'm sure better players can come up with better combos.

What happens if you take 2 praetor esque characters? Could you take 2 ROW or only the warlord can?

On the note for night lords, I feel terror assault with Raven guard infiltrating can be somewhat effective. They'd probably play like a more stabby version of 40k Raven guard.

I put together a Shadow Crusade Shattered Legions list including Word Bearers, World Eaters and Night Lords.  This is meant to be a fluffy Ultramarines stomping list, not some beardy game breaking abomination.

Word Bearers

Zardu Layak + Blade Slaves (Warlord - Dark Brethren RoW)

5 Ashen Circle (Power Axes, Artificer Armour, Melta Bomb, Phosphex Bomb, Dark Channelling)

20 Word Bearers Tactical Marines (Additional CCWs, Vox, Artificer Armour, Power Fist, Melta Bomb, Dark Channelling)

Gal Vorbak (Artificer Armour, Power Fist)

World Eaters

Gahlan Surlak

20 World Eater Despoiler Marines (Chainaxes, Vox, Artificer Armour, Power Fist, Melta Bomb)

Spartan (Armoured Ceramite, Flare Shield)

Red Butchers (2 Chainfists)

Dreadclaw Drop Pod

Night Lords

Night Lords Cataphractii Chaplain (Chainfist, Combi-weapon, Teleport, Trophies of Judgement)

7 Night Lords Cataphractii (4 Combi-weapons, 2 Power Fists, 2 Chainfists, 3 Paired Lightning Claws, Teleport)

9 Terror Marines (Volkite Chargers, Artificer Armour, Power Axe, Melta Bomb)

3000 points

Shattered Legions lists are really fun to put together, but you really have to start from a fluff standpoint.  If you just go hunting for broken combinations you'll never find anyone that actually wants to play you, and shattered legions as a whole is just going to be seen as the unbound of 30K, which it doesn't really deserve.

So does anyone have any ideas what the Night Lords would work well with? I like the idea of a Night Lords plus World Eaters list mainly because I like both legions. I was thinking maybe Night Lords terror assualt mixed in with some world eaters terminators? Any idea they benefit from the most or from a fluff point?

I feel night lords would benefit from infiltrating/deep striking legions from a fluff perspective, I believe there was fluff about Raven guard and night lords working together.

Game play, anything that would allow them to hit fast and overwhelm, maybe something that can act as a distraction carnifex to allow the night lords to get into position to multi charge. Basically you want to be in close combat and outnumber.

Were the Night Lords really part of the Shadow Crusade though? They just happened to be tearing through a different part of Ultramar at the same time as Lorgar and Angron were tearing their way through it.

You have it mostly right. The Shadow Crusade technically ends a year before the Thramas Crusade does. Book 6 lists the Shadow Crusade as 007-008.M31, and the Thramas Crusade as 007-009.M31. So Lorgar & Angron are getting out of there or are actually gone by the time the Night Lords split up.

From a Shattered Legion perspective, that's around when traitor Shattered Legions start picking up as well, as the majority of the Night Lords can be considered "shattered" at that point, and elements of the Word Bearers and World Eaters as well because they've been involved in the chaos of the Shadow Crusade.

009.M31 is also when the ambush at Dwell happens and Tybalt Marr forms the anti-loyalist Shattered Legion traitor Shattered Legions tongue.png

So to confirm, since my copy of Retribution hasn't arrived (curses) if you want to take any Legion specific units, or any units that benefit from the Legiones Astartes rule of that particular Legion, you MUST take a HQ from that Legion in one form or another?

YUP!

I think the exception is Shadrak Meduson, who counts as a Salamander, Iron Hand and Raven Guard... But I am not sure. I know he can choose thier Rites of War at least.

Speaking of that, anyone thought of s good build to utilise him in a triple Bro team of Istvaan V all stars?

Mor Dreythan and Firedrakes? Be rude not to...

And immortals to hold the line? Oh, go on then...

Go Decap strike to give the Firedrakes preferred enemy warlord and everyone access to drop pods.

Kaedes Nex for the lulz and Cassian Dracos too? Tasty.
