After what feels like years of waiting, I can finally talk about my part in the latest thrust of Warhammer 40,000 narrative. Today sees the release of Curse of the Wulfen, the first installment in the new War Zone Fenris campaign. That means lots of shiny new models, rules and, indeed, stories. The first novel of the series is the appropriately-named Curse of the Wulfen, penned by the excellent David Annandale. The sequel, starting in serialised ebook chapters soon and released as a single, physical novel later this year, will be by me.

Crossing my fingers the the Grey Knights get some attention in the next installment of the Warzone:Fenris campaign. They appear to play a significant role in the background of the campaign, partnering with the Space Wolves to defeat the demonic incursions, and they could really, really use some loving with a decent Decurion and a bunch of little Formations. As it stands, I'd say they have the blandest of all of the codices.

Looking on the promotional release video they talk about 8 to 10 new formations for both wolfs and deamons, dice, etc but nothing about the knights

So yes the best we can expect from that is probably 5 to 10 lines of fluff written under heavy drugs.

It wouldn't be in this book; we already knew what was in part 1. I'm suggesting that we could very well get updates in the campaign part 2 book, which is likely to come next.

Define what you mean by "next". Do you mean next in the campaign, next in the gw release schedule, or just next an in that's what may be im the future for the gtey knights? Subquestion: in the past what was the time frame between the first and second part of a campaign?

So Space Wolves get at initiative AP2 Lightning Claws, and the ability to declare charges in the opponents turn.

Great.

(I wonder if they can still be overwatched when they charge in the opponents turn?)

Edit: Oh and we all loved Blood Talons giving extra attacks and letting a single Dread munch thorugh an entire 10+ mini unit.

Any Wulfen (because you are taking them in their special formation...) who rolled a 6 to-hit, get an extra attack.  That gets to roll to-hit, and gets a 6.  Who then gets an extra attack....

On every Wulfen.

Who can also get a S8 AP2 weapon that rolls on initiative first turn.

And 30 points for a statline that rivals Paladin (without the save!!)

Troll more GW, troll more.

I think they can only charge engaged units so there would not be the opportunity to overwatch.

Do Tau still get the ability for other units to Overwatch if in range?  Maybe it would only apply when facing Tau.

You'd have to check the wording of their codex.... if a unit can only 'assist' in overwatch, that would indicate the squad can overwatch in the first place. If the wording is more like: they can overwatch regardless of the state of the charged squad.. .then I guess they can. But yes, by default Tau do have Assisted Overwatch. And Dark Angels have that in limited formations too.

Dangles too....

So maybe they could also overwatch a counter charging space wolf unit.

Thematic. ;) Wolves versus Lions.

Still 3/4 Attacks at S8/AP2 on initiative (not slowed by terrain due to launchers) with every 6 granting another hit.  And able to do so in the enemies Assault phase as well.

GW, what are you doing to your own game.  Had enough with D strength pie plates?  /sigh

I always, always used one H. Psilencer on an NDK. Two out of 3 games it might hardly kill anything, but that one time it does, it's usually noteworthy.

I have plucked Flying Hive Tyrants out of the sky with those things... they are the great equalizer to certain categories of units that can give GK a fit.

You're being unreasonably negative here. Firstly, I doubt you'll see many Murderpack + Decurion builds, the buy in price is just too high (just like how everyone lost their censored.gif over that Ad Mech formation with free upgrades, then it turned out to not really matter). Secondly, if Wulfen are built for the S8 option they have a 4+ save. Even with Fnp, that's not hard to damage with shooting. The 'able to do so in the enemies Assault phase as well' is just overblown. It's dependent on the Decurion, and quite frankly, the Wolf Decurion is far from the strongest we've seen. Plus, it's hardly carte blanche to jump anyone they feel like, as they can only do that to engaged units.

Not to mention i5, with 2 wounds, 3++ saves and fnp too. Nothing we have short of stern+draigo+pallies is going to hold up to that.

psylencers might see a bit more use?

You're combining multiple, incompatible loadouts here. If they have the 3++, then they have hammers, so the I5 doesn't matter (maybe for sweeps, but not much is going to survive those attacks anyway msn-wink.gif ).

Are Wulfen good? Yeah, sure. Are they paradigm shifting, game-breakingly twisted? Not by a long shot. You've already highlighted a solid counter from the GK arsenal, psilencers. Will do a number on shield-less Wulfen, and the ones with the 3++ dies as easily to that as a Tac Marine, yet are 50 points a pop.

Nope, really not.

Look at the statline for Paladin (yeah, 2+ save.  not that that is worth the cost these days...  4+ with FnP is fine).  Now look at Wulfen.

With S8 on initiative AP2 CC attacks.  That can potentially have the option for and extra attack for every 6 to hit rolled.

And that's unreasonably negative?

Let's not forget the Run + Charge (with reroll) to make sure you get into CC, and the "have a second round of attacks if you died" special ability that comes baked in.  (Not like, a single Psychic Power fueled last ditch attack if you're killed.  But an entire extra round of all your normal attacks...)

*That's* unreasonable.

And I'll ignore the added bonus that they can buff other units in the army as well.  Three S8, AP2 I5 attacks is enough.  With 2 wounds and a 4+/FnP save.

and quite frankly, the Wolf Decurion is far from the strongest we've seen.

Well at least you *have* that option...

Edit: Ah who cares.  Next month GW will release something new that makes Wulfen look like underpowered shelve ornaments.  The power creep is unreasonable, whatever flavour it takes.

The other thing to remember is that TWC are still better. Don't get me wrong, Wulfen will blenderise most things. But TWC are still harder to bring down, especially for us as psilencers just bounce off the 2+ rune armour the TWC Lord will be packing.

It's things like this that really grind my gears. GW specifically reset the balance at the start of, what was it, 6th edition? So all power weapons were AP3, and anything that was AP2 was unwieldy. Exceptions were rare, relics, or monstrous creatures.

But because the monkeys writing GW rules have run out of imagination, instead of just making the Wolfen a different but efficient choice, they chose to simply bukkake game-breaking exceptions and overpowered upgrades onto them. It's like they deliberately set out to think of how they could further devalue 2+ armour.

"Hey guys, Terminators already have one foot in the grave, how can we push them over the edge?"

"Oh I know, let's start handing out AP2 at initiative in close combat!"

"Wow, great idea!"

It's just silly. GW rules are silly.

I'm glad I only play casually.
