The Wulfen Thread

I tried wulfen in a LR Redeemer today. Five wulfen, pack leader, 2 TH/SS, 2 GFA, 2 Grenade Launchers. I ran them in a CAD coupled with the Deathpack formation. I played against RG and he had the Shadowstrike Kill Team, Raptorwing and I think a CAD. We were playing cleanse and control with Vanguard Strike. He dropped both VV squads and two drop pods in my face and killed the Redeemer with two melta shots. The resulting explosion killed a single Wulfen and a random assortment of marines and skyclaws. He charged into the Wulfen with both VV squads and his warlord and the Wulfen chewed them up as well as the warlord. The wulfen proceeded to kill two more scout squads before they were finally brought down. They were a huge psychological threat and I think they altered my opponent's game plan as he jumped right into the teeth of my army.

The LR is expensive but it gives a level of protection. Still not convinced which way to go. I may try to foot slog them next.

A guy at my club plays RG with this near exact list. Good to know how they faired.

I've played him twice against it, first time he really pulled my pants down, second time he still won but it was so much closer. Next time, I hope I can turn the tables with some wulfen buffs.

I'm thiking foot slogging the formation is what works best for the cost of a land raider you can have another 5 man squad of wulfen with a couple of shields and you're going to have to make your opponent choose the lesser of 2 evils by figuring out if they should target the wulfen or Thunderwolves. My bet is they target the wulfen as the thunderwolves have more staying power. Anything that draws fire away from harald and his Wolf escort service is fine with me. Running them with 2 10 man and 1 5 man packs of hunters in a seperate cad wirh ulrik and a pack of missile fangs for support. Still trying to squeeze enough points into the list to fit in at least 1 squad of scouts with camocloaks and sniper rifles for more long range support and a servitor for the elite tax on my cotgw. The reason I want to run it this way is I'm not sure I like the pack formations.

I agree. I will give that a shot once I get the second pack converted.

I'm still debating how I plan to assemble my Wulfen (and might do something like the tutorial that can net 11 instead of five from the pack).  I'm looking for suggestions though on how to kit them out.  I like the idea of the axes and the punch daggers, but I realize that the shields give them a strong survability boost.

I actually built my wulfen based off of your list. I like the flexibility and the threat level it has. I will be foot slogging them but I tend to run a list of just pure threat value so while yes they can choose to shot my wulfen off the board, it's just going to give my TWC the time they need to get up the field, DP's to land, and LF's to pick apart their army.

I'm finding that approach works pretty well. When the RG dropped into my army he had to choose between the TWC and wulfen and either choice was going to see him get eaten in my assault phase by whichever he didn't choose. The wulfen at I5 are great for murdering stuff and the shields give a lot of resiliency.

If anyone has any suggestions or want me to try anything specific out with the last tutorial let me know. I plan on making a WOlf priest, lord, and a rune priest. DUnno how I'm going to equip the lord yet. Also considering making a wulfen iron priest using murderfangs head.

So this last week I saw two Wulfen builds,

3 th/ss

Pack Leader

Great Frost Axe

Abd

4 ss/th

Pack leader

The first build went up against a MASSIVE IG gunline. The SW player flanked the Wulfen by an embarked unit of Blood Claws and a big TWC unit. And while only one TH/SS Wulfen got into close combat, the TWC and disembarked Blood Claes were about mid strength size still. All three wrecked straight havoc once in the IG lines. His other Wulfen unit was delivered undamaged by a LR and decimated a huge ogre squad supported by a priest and commissar.

In the second case, SW player was up against Tau. His Wulfen were in close proximity to a GH pack and a WGTDA pack. The Wulfen took a huge amount of fire but once they got into the Tau lines, the two left decimated a ton of points.

Key to take away, if they have close support in terms of high threat targets they are either going to take fire away from those units or the fire will be shared across multiple units thus making it less effective for each.

This is exactly what I'm hoping for, thanks for the feedback!

So here's my wulfen-with-heels I was talking about. Need to sand them to get the sizing cosistant. Otherwise I like this a lot more.

Rune Priest on the end is for my Wyrdbros. He's supposed to be be in power armor, but he's huge. I've been affectionately calling him Biomancy Bob.

I am personally thinking of bubble wrapping my Wulfen with TWC and Rhino embarked GH/BC. This will really put the choice on my opponent to prioritize his target selection, but with whatever he chooses he will still have two or more dangerous units making their way towards his lines.

A couple TWC with SS/TH

Bare bones TWC

IP on TWM with cyber wolves

Wulfen with a couple of ss/th

Great Frost Axe

2 x frost Claws

Flanked by two Rhinos with GH or BC.

TWC and tip and edges of spear, Wulfen is bad stuff that gets thrust into lines.

That is a nice little aesthetic change!

I like the idea of screening them behind rhinos and flanked by twc. Could just go all sorts of msu and run some razor backs for fire support while moving

I would almost want to see if I could go with a Ironwolves formation for fast vehices with disembark bonus to screen and free upgrades to screen the TWC and Murderpacks. I think the synergy needed would be for the BC and GH to keep up with the TWC and Wulfen with the Wulfen giving all the curse bonus with added bonus to hunt and kill tables.

So I quickly scanned through the thread and I didn't see anything about it, how hard do those of you who've gotten your hands on the models think it would be to magnetize these bad boys?

On a scale from 1 to really flippin hard.....

Really flippin hard. I think you could do it but there are 2 spots in each arm you'd have to magnetize. The shoulder joint and hands.

Then I would think it shouldn't be too hard to magnetize the extra arms to extra weapons so you can swap out weapon loadouts as needed. It will be an issue for the axes, however, as trying to magnetize two handed weapons is a real PITA. I'm not convinced axes are worth taking in general, unless you expect to go up against a lot of T6+ MCs. I'd probably make 4 sets of TH/SS arms, and another 4 sets of frost claws, and the remaining as empty.

If you do magnetize can you post pictures on how you did it?
