Chaos Space Pirates -- revisiting old models

Got into 40K a decade ago, then the whole miniature hobby scene up and vanished from my area. Recently I've been digging out some of the old stuff I made, figuring maybe I can at least paint them. Let's see if I get anywhere...

The force itself was greatly inspired by the then-current Pirates of the Caribbean films, particularly Davy Jones' crew. Lots of conversions everywhere! As well as general ignorance of "rules." Instead of a proper uniform, the individual pirates have a skull-and-crossbones and something gold painted somewhere, typically the shoulder armors.

These figures were painted years ago:

That melted guy was literally melted with fire, something I would NOT recommend doing. It smooths out the surrounding detail. Plus "danger" and all that...

Or left unpainted years ago:

And here's my recent attempts at painting:

Still quite a lot to get thru, including 10 unpainted marines, a Terminator Lord, a Dreadnaught, Raptors, and a box of unassembled Khorne Berzerkers I'm not quite sure why I bought.

Haha!

Thinking on it, I might have bought the Berzerkers because I wanted more troops but got tired of the basic set. I think I had gotten it like 3 or 4 times. (darn younger me for being so loose with money)

Painted a few more. This is slow going... doesn't help the days are shorter and the sun provides most of my lighting.

Bull Bros weren't originally 'related' when I built them, but it was hard for me not to think of them as such now.

Unpainted; the current captain, held together with sticky tack. His one eye's bulging out, the idea being his helmet got breached in space and his eye got yanked out because of the decompression. (ew!)

That familiar would make a great monkey/parrot stand-in, even if it's a tad big.

And the former captain, interned into a Dreadnaught a little early...

http://i.imgur.com/7y1gh5c.jpg

Those little signs will have to read "Kick Me" and something else rude. :tongue.:

And an extra close-combat arm arm:

These guys are so much fun!!!!

I love it!

Although the guy in the bottom right picture I have quoted below confuses me.

A. How did he get that dagger in his mouth?
B. Why isn't he biting the handle, since clearly he hasn't just put it there so he could use his hand for a second...

There's no cohesion or unity between a single member of this crew (the person being carried away by two other doesn't count as that's three people). Everyone has it's own look, it looks like a bunch of individuals.

I love it! It definitely does carry the theme of a crew rather than a uniformed warband, which does make a change to the amounts of standard rank and file people everywhere.

Favourite has to be the one with the the person bound and strapped to his backpack.

^ Thanks, guys!

Painted the duo hauling the (broken) statue:

(boy I never realized how uneven the bases where until seeing that last pic as I'm posting it now)

Since I already did a patina effect for one of the other pirates, I thought I'd give the statue a cleaner look.

The purity seals are a bit shinier than the rest. Imperial citizens rub it for luck -- or at least they used to.

Digging thru all my leftover parts to see what exactly I have. Lessee....

http://i.imgur.com/8SoxU7R.jpg

~50 heads, 5 backpacks, 6 torso fronts (no backs), and 1 pair of legs -- biker legs at that. Not very helpful.

Also dug up these things:

I'm flummoxed as to what yester-me intended to use these for. Surely I had to have SOME kind of goal, why else would I even glue them?

Paint, paint, paint...

Rootbeard's flower is based upon the Rafflesia, meaning he'd smell awful. The teeny tiny dots were achieved by taking a single bristle from one of those horrible plastic wire beginners paintbrushes I've somehow not gotten rid of. Turned out to be useful for painting afterall.

I tried giving this guy an "inner fire" effect using washes, turned out making the armor sun-damaged instead, which I liked enough to keep.

On the flip side, the washes on the 'bone' turned out way better than I could've hoped for -- maybe too good. The freehand crossbones and greenstuffed whip are especially bad looking compared to the skull helmet..

Another week, another... two models.

Brain-in-a-robot-suit, very much a wish-fulfillment type of character for me as I've always loved that villain trope.

Back when I put him together, the Adaptus Mechanicus line didn't exist! Had to make clever use of parts instead.

http://i.imgur.com/iAR31C5.jpg

Added some Tyranid bits and "acid damage" to the Plasma Gunner before painting him up. He initially had an animal skin as a kind of cape, but my attempt at GSing it went horrible, so I revisited the idea with a far simpler approach.

I'm liking the brain-bot's coat: is it all greenstuff? Overall, I like the chaotic nature of your pirates, and some of them are actually pretty hilarious. it really makes me think of late-80s GW zaniness in the best way.

My one critique would be this, though: do you have a small enough brush for eyes and the like? They are quite blobby, and in my own opinion could benefit from being cleaned up, if only by painting outside of them in their surrounding colors.

Thanks! It's very much a tongue-in-cheek little army.

The brain-bot's coat is indeed all greenstuff.

The smallest brush I got is "Citadel Fine Detail"... which seems rather borderline for fine details, really. Plus, I'm using hobby/artist acrylic paints, which can be a bit gloopy and can be tricky to water down properly. Plus plus, I might be overestimating how big the actual eye/lenses are; i.e. I'm assuming it's the entire recessed area (which admittedly sounds dumb of me, but hey, these things are tiny).

But yeah, I'll have to go back and fix them up later. And maybe, for the next models, try painting them in reverse? Paint the eyes first, then the rest of the head, see how that goes.

Eldar-napper:

Gonna do some touch-ups, but with that I'm *done* with all the "normal" Marines. But I still got Spawn and Berserkers and Possessed and too many other things...

Went back to "fisticuffs" to fix his eyes up. Accidentally overdid it a touch, making him delightfully surly:

Working on the Terminator Lord, Captain Meathook:

http://i.imgur.com/I4LtwaG.jpg

Somehow, he's simultaneously really drab and really gaudy. Still need to work on the cape and gun, and general tidying up.

This figure's left foot and shoulder armor didn't seem to want to attach. I mean, I used plastic glue so they're unlikely to fall apart, but it felt like I must've messed something up because they weren't 'fitting' right. Not a good feeling when the hook make of bits of sprue and that that vehicle accessory goes together more easily than a foot on the ground...

On a different note, that little familiar critter's got his own little base now, as well as his own little hook:

http://i.imgur.com/8PPPA7O.jpg

Thinking on it now, the little guy really ought to have a whole case of alternate "hands" for Meathook. Maybe that could be an objective marker! :laugh.:

Captain completed!

http://i.imgur.com/sTOs6sK.jpg

Even went so far as to add teeny little veins on his eye.

And the little monkey/cabin boy/whatever, who manages to look really adorable:

http://i.imgur.com/5USArUp.jpg

Wouldn't you know, a short drop onto carpet bent his shoulder spike, making it look a bit weird.

And a group shot, since I've made some kind of progress!

I should probably be painting my already-assembled Raptors and Dreadnaught, but instead I've been assembling... I dunno what these are. Gribbly weirdness.

http://i.imgur.com/2nKPzkO.jpg

Snailly Snailson. Guess he could just be another Marine, goodness knows I've made some weird ones.

http://i.imgur.com/GF0uzNo.jpg

Gun robot things. Or at least that's the plan, at the moment they wouldn't look out of place on top of a Rhino. They'll eventually get some form of legs.

http://i.imgur.com/ecQxaiA.jpg

Probably not those legs...

Had to remake the trophy racks, which turned out to be lots of fun!

http://i.imgur.com/vuGmbUP.jpg

Also had this octo-bot lying around.

http://i.imgur.com/Z9XrX30.jpg

If I were the type to actually play the game, I guess I'd count these funky robots as Obliterators or Havocs.

Fiddling around with legs/bodies for the guns. Which is kinda hard given how they really aren't designed for anything other than vehicles.

http://i.imgur.com/Y8iPzyU.jpg

Organ things!

And more futzing around; a Sorcerer (also, a snowman):

http://i.imgur.com/Z1lIwCQ.jpg

Nothing glued, just had an idea I wanted to see. Turned out a bit... heroic, angelic even. Not quite the freakish sinister mutant I was shooting for.
