The Bitterness of Iron (Praetor Conversion pg.4)

So a few months back, a friend of mine convinced me to get into 30k with him... down the rabbit hole I fell.

Originally he wanted to do Ultramarines, so I picked a heretic legion to oppose them. I've always liked Iron Warriors, and reading more of their fluff... bitter, ruthless warriors willing to sacrifice any number to achieve their end? I approve. Bring on the nihilistic paranoid super soldiers. Now he's decided to do word bearers though, my guys are... apparently loyalist Iron Warriors. We will see.

I painted a few test models back around christmas while waiting for my Calth box to arrive. The last few months have been slow going, with real life and other gaming projects getting in the way, but I'm once more motivated, so hopefully I can make this stick.

Test model on test base, finished yesterday.

Two other test models, based. Just need some touch ups. All the markings are hand painted... not really happy with the legion symbol.

Feedback is very appreciated, let me know any comments and criticism :)

Wow, you took 'gritty and war-hardened' out of the dictionary and nailed it onto these minis. These guys look great. I have one minor bit of constructive commentary - would you consider thinning the edge highlights/edge damage a little? Done too thick (as on bottom left marine in the group pic facing forward, the arm supporting the bolter) it can detract a little from an otherwise excellent job.

Don't worry about the freehand by the way, it looks better than a lot of efforts and I don't think I could necessarily do better - plus, if questioned, you can always say the marine daubed on the markings during battlefield repairs when there wasn't time to submit it properly to the armourium.

Keep it up!

I do try to keep the edge highlights fairly fine, but my painting style tends to be pretty sloppy, especially on large flat surfaces like power armour. That said, I'll bear it in mind. And I really like that idea for the markings... makes sense that after a gritty campaign many marines would be forced to make running repairs to their armour's insignia. And badarse iron warriors probably didn't take art classes, unlike those poncy blood angels.

Anyway, I got a fair bit done tonight on the first of my calth marines. The plastic models are quite different to the resin, detail is softer, models are somewhat chunkier. I think I've taken the armour a shade too bright, so the next batch may not get so many highlights. Also tried a new method to do the hazard stripes, which seems to be working alright.

Thanks very much for all the kind words everyone, the good feedback definitely motivates me :smile.:

Yeah that red power sword is among the best red swords I've ever seen. If you'd be willing to share the technique you'd have at least one eternally grateful frater.

I'll be honest, I tend to paint pretty ad lib, using whatever I have on the palette and not following any specific plan. But broadly (and this will probably be useful to me later too...), the technique was:

Basecoat white

Paint with thinned down Brilliant Red (reaper) and red ink (P3)

Shade with thin layers of that mix with Crimson red (reaper), shade it like you would an nmm blade, to help create the illusion of reflections

Start highlighting with multiple thin layers of Brilliant Red, adding white to the mix slowly. Once again, highlight as per nmm

Edge highlight with a very pale mix of white and red. Also add a few diagonal slashes across the blade, again to create a shimmery/reflective look.

Add a few very tiny dots of pure white around the 'node' at the base of the blade, and a few at the tip. No real reason, they just look cool. Maybe sparks flickering along the energised blade?

Hopefully that at least goes some way to showing the process - it's really not that complex, just a matter of layering until it 'look right'. The OSL is achieved with thin glazes of Brilliant red and a little white, with sharp edges being highlighted with a brighter mix as they catch the light.

If I paint another power sword I'll take some photos and do a step by step :smile.:

Many thanks brother. Iron Within Iron Without!

Tonight's progress. Not much, just did some tacticool markings in wonky freehand. Chapter icons awaiting transfers courtesy of a friend.
I have three more finished awaiting me to make some more bases.

Veteran Sergeant Aiak Yhezev, Decurion of the 6th Cohort, 33rd Grand Battalion

Veteran Sergeant Yhezev is comparatively young for his rank, especially in a legion which places less emphasis on individual glory. Aiak is possessed of an uncommonly optimistic outlook, compared to his often bitter and nihilistic comrades. For him, the Great Crusade is a cause worthy of fighting and dying for, and the demands made on his legion are all honourable in themselves, regardless of the prestige attached. While garrison duty may not be his first choice, he does not feel aggrieved to find his cohort assigned to protecting a vital Imperial staging point.

With his buddies

Squad on point...

Thanks for reading :smile.:

That, my dear Sir, is a wonderfully done Squad, perfect OSL on the Sergeants weapons and the Squads eyes, there is only one point of critique... the Highlights on the shoulders look quite rough in my opinion... and... perhaps a tiny bit more weathering/battledmg on the next ones? Maybe? Please!!! :D

It's great to hear so much positive feedback, much appreciated everyone :smile.:

@Warpedpath - you're right, I appreciate the feedback - I want to work on improving the edge highlights on my armour. And if you want more weathering, the next squad should please you. Planning to make them campaign veterans fresh from the front.

With that in mind... I started assembling a few new marines, breaking out the greenstuff (which I suck with...) to try and embellish them a little. Going for a more hardened, battle ready look compared to Yhezev's fresh squad. Reinforced armour, battle damage, ammo packs etc. Let me know what you think, good or no?

"...breaking out the Greenstuff( which I suck with..)"  and the first pic is one of a realy nicely done shoulderpad... xD

I prefer Miliput over Greenstuff, because you can sand it so get it smooth but I think, after painting the helmets will look quite nice!

Wow those are awesome do you mind showing the recipe you use for the marines?

Thanks! If people are interested I'd be happy to do a breakdown of the silver next time I paint some dudes.

Made some more bases, so I based the last three painted marines from squad Yhezev.

Also had some IW transfers show up courtesy of a friend. Now to go back and add legion markings. I know officially the IW's have black shoulder pads... should probably modify mine. Not sure what I'll do exactly.

Thanks for reading.
