Arythian 1st "The Gracious" (WIP)

Hi all, after getting some feedback on a good starter list over here I decided to make an official WIP topic.

http://i.imgur.com/VRMKVsw.jpg

The fluff for this regiment is the knight world Aryth was invaded by chaos legions in an attempt to destabilize the Ad.Mech. in the sector who were currently struggling over a nearby Forgeworld. The local knight Lords fought them off for a while and awaited relief from the Ad.Mech forces, however most of these forces were already occupied defending the Forgeworld. The desperate world was eventually relieved by the A.M. diverted en route to the Forgeworld.

The legions of chaos were pushed back, however the battle over the Forgeworld still rages. In gratitude, the knight Lords of Aryth tithed a full regiment consisting of the best household guard and militias the planet over. These feudal men were outfitted with equipment that they could hardly conceive of, but in short order adapted to. They still hold high loyalty the the noble houses of Aryth and as such are often seen in uniforms of the household colors of their Lords.

Essentially imagine the regiment as militias and knights from the middle ages outfitted with the standard guardsmen gear and launched out into the void to attempt to pay the Imperium back for saving their world.

So here's my progress so far. I bought the Cadian Defense Force and the Start Collecting A.M. box. The CDF is still in the mail so this is all from the start collecting box. The box is a great way to pad out a CDF box from what I have seen, and much cheaper than buying a second CDF altogether.

I have all the models glued up and will undercoat tomorrow I think.

We'll start with the Russ. I magnetized the sponson mounting points and the turret (this seems to be a new method) and used some greenstuff to make the hull weapon easily swapable. Lacking a heavy stubber for pintle mounting I mounted a spare heavy bolter from the HWT sprue for a counts as heavy stubber.

Here you can see the way I magnetized the turret, it makes a really solid connection and required a fairly extensive cutting down of some spare sprue but I am happy with the result.

I countersunk the magnets on the inside of the treads, here you can see a stack attaching to the magnets inside the tread housing:

I outfitted both flamers from the box for my two squads of troops using I think the Vox helmets as they look really cool with the flamers. I posed them a bit differently and think the effect makes them sort of unique. I had to green stuff a bit but that was one of the easier conversions.

Here's the rest of the squad:

You can see I made two of them into the Flakk Missile Team for my veteran squad, standing poses to look interesting. I know the consensus is that they are useless but at least they look cool! One of my mortar men is pictured here too. Not pictured is the Bog Standard Auto cannon I glued up.

Now here is the conversion I am most proud of:

Converted the legs, torso, arms, and shoulders to get this pose.

I used one of the backpacks from the HWT sprue to give this guy a bit of character:

Here you can see what I did when I made to much Greenstuff: a weapons mount for any spare tripod weapons:

and here is an improved sandbag prop: (Reached the image limit)

Anyhow that's what I've done so far. It's been a blast getting into the hobby and I am very happy with the direction I am going. Comments Questions and Critique are welcomed!

Thanks for reading!

Good to see your WIP getting started thumbsup.gif Colour scheme is fitting for a more heraldic army. Not sure what you mean about green stuff on the hull weapon though? Looking forward to seeing some paint on them biggrin.png

SO look really closely at the bottom of the hull weapon.inside the socket I smeared some GS on the bottom and then inserted a hull weapon. I then pulled it out. When it dried it made it a nice friction fit so the hull wepaon wont fall out but can be swapped instantly.

Welcome to the barracks. That's a fair amount of conversion work on the grunts, you planning on making each squad unique? Look forward to seeing some colour splashed down, I'm partial to red coated guardsmen. Also don't forget to drill your flamers and bolter barrels, it's a small thing but adds a lot.

Yeah I'm planning on making each squad pretty varried just so they look better on the shelf and table. I've got by undercoat ready to lay down in spray but it's been raining like mad here, I may just go do it down by the hot water heater in my appartment basement.

Kitbashing is really fun so far as you end up with more than the standard poses.

I had another idea as well, make any psykers converted wizards from my dnd mini stock.

Another good source for kit bashing primaris psykers is the empire battle wizard kit in fantasy (sorry AoS). There are a number of examples dotted around the board done a couple myself.

I'll have to check that out, but for now any psyker duties will be filled by this guy here:

(Pictures were quick on the phone.. sorry for the quality)

And now I realized that I only had one melta gun and one plasma gun. Fluff to the rescue!

Following a tutorial over on Dakadaka I converted lasguns into them. The forgeworld under siege has been named Tuynus. During the fight over Aryth, the ruins of several STC facilities were located with a new, smaller, lighter, but harder to produce pattern of these special weapons. The forges of Tuynus experimented with the new pattern as it could use the standard lasgun parts already in storage. In the rush to equip the new regiment these new patterns were shipped out to The Gracious.

Not a bad kit bash for the meltas and plasmas

Good thinking

Pain in the butt the lack of plasma and meltas in the standard kit

Thanks! yeah I need to make one more melta, I wish they just sold srpues of special weapons but no you have to but the 15 dollar set of plasma and melta troopers.

Mold lines! For the sake of the Emperor! Remove the mold lines before gluing anything!

I find it easier to remove mold lines once its glued up as I have fairly large fingers, is there an advantage to cleaning it up before the glue up?

So I finally got around to spraying undercoats and painting up a test figure. I intentionally left some mold lines on this guy to see what I could get away with after the colors went on. The answer is more than I thought.

So here is a standard lasgun grunt.

I tried to give him a bit of a beard, not sure how well that came out though. I have some touchup work to do now still and the gold details but I am very happy with the color scheme I came up with now. I need to practice faces quite a bit more though.

Some betters pics of my Psyker/Wizard (note the lack of pupils was intentional), Hes a reaper bones figure and I like the way he came out for this.

I'm very happy with how green stuff painted up and looks when covered.

Now I've also redone my Army list a bit. Cut down on upgrades and found the points for a full 3x lascannon HWT and met 999 points. I may try to fit the psyker in there as well but am unsure if hes worth the points or how my LFGS will take non GW figure in 40k (even though they also sell the bones).

Great start, I really like this colour scheme. I think the red and brown are close in tone at the mo and could do with a little more of a difference. What colours are you using at the min? Personally I would make the jacket a brighter red (Mephiston) it would contrast better the the pants. Or go Khorne red for the the jacket and XV-88 or similar for the pants. Also what colour are you going for on the gun casing?

Right now I'm using army painter range for the colors just to try to figure out what I want to do, I may or may not pick up some citadel pots sometime soon. The red in the army painter is not pigmented enough and is nearly transparent sometimes, I've heard citadel has great reds. I think at the least I'll get some reds. As for the gun right now its a sort o metallic base. I really don't have any idea how I want it to look and thought the almost tarnished color differentiated it from the armor enough to make it not blend in. Entirely open for suggestions there.

Also I have two russes and a chimera to paint and no idea what colors would match. I think a blue based scheme may work fairly well as it could be a separate "house", all I know is that i really don't want to go camo or green. I'll save that for when I sell my kidney and buy DKOK lol.

So it's been a pretty crazy month, but at last I have found some time to start painting my army. I'm 95% done with my veterans squad, which puts me about 15% done with my army blink.png .

I bought citadel reds, browns, and metalic silver and they are fantastic. Much better coverage. I may have to pick up the colors for faces and details as well.

Here are some shots of the vet squad:

(Whole Album Here)

So the sergeant of the squad ended up looking like Hitler by accident. Slipped when adding some black to the hair and he ended up like this:

Three Lasgun troopers. One has a Vox but just for aesthetics at the moment, IDK if I will equip with them in the future.

The plasma veterans are so cool they wear shades.

http://i.imgur.com/5ox4lkB.jpg

You can see the two converted plasma guns on the left, with the real one on the right. I need to touch up some faces and armor but I really like the way they came out. I need to wash the guns with something darker too.

My prone squad sharpshooter (just a lasgun here sadly) takes aim. He needs a lot of touch up but I need to get some more paints before I can do his face properly.

And then the veteran Flak Missile team.

http://i.imgur.com/14FckZA.jpg

Here is the squads dedicated chimera, sans its dozer blade. I converted it with an auto cannon and green stuff to look like the bags on a battleship gun. I think it looks pretty good for a first try.

As always, C&C greatly appreciated! I have no idea how I want to paint the chimera, but want it to match the veterans to an extent. Advice would be lovely.

Anyways thanks for looking at my mediocre army!

Wow its been a while. Since my last post I moved to Dallas for the summer, Switched jobs, and got a lot more paints.

I finally got the army done enough that I would be comfortable putting it on the table. 1000 points painted and ready for a game. I rushed a but on the last few guardsmen, but I'm glad to have something done finally. All I really need are two more heavy weapons bases for a mortar team and the middle team.

So on to pictures:

Here is the full army.

Here is one of the Russes, loved building these

More:

Had a bit of a screw up with the spray can on a face, decided to make his face into a visor. Think it came out pretty good. was a lot easier to paint than the other faces. Almost looks like a storm trooper.

More

And the command squad and the lord commisar

More

So that's that. Need to do some more touch ups, especially on the faces, and the finish the bases off with the gravel and the grass. Now I need to get them on the table.

Next steps are an imperial knight, a company command squad, and a Wyvren.

Ok, as promised, battle report:

So I ended up with some old CSM as a gift. In order to get up to 1500 points (average for my store) I decided to ally with them. This means one simple thing, my guardsmen, in their simpleton naivete, have fallen for the temptations of the chaos gods (sometimes).

This battle was a renegades of vraks + CSM vs power gamer space marines.

I was running the unending horde detachment. This lets troop units return to ongoing reserves on a 2+ when destroyed, all the troops are also exceptionally cheap and flexible. These troops can then outflank.

The game was 2500 points. My main force consisted of many squads, carrying flamers, meltas, and plasma guns, supported by a leman russ squadron, and a hellhammer (not present in renegades codex but we agreed it was ok). They took a vendetta through a guard ally force and two squads of emperors children with a chaos sorceress leading them.

Here is the gallary:

http://imgur.com/a/bT8h8

(order got completely screwed up by imgur.. i need a better photo host)

I deployed first, due to the terrain I had to put my hell hammer in one spot. My opponent then deployed, and proceeded to steal the initiative....

The game went down hill from there. With scouting drop pod beacon alpha strike shenanigans and a very meta aware list things got crazy fast. Grav centurions with grav amps and Tigereous, as well as a chapter master with more saves than a roller coaster tycoon game came down in drop pods.

A formation of vindicators and a razorback with a tech marine made quick work of my right flank as well. Being able to seize the initiative on a 5+ is fairly annoying.

My hell hammer died without getting a shot off, (it was stunned, although it should have ignored that, and it should have had cover due to my infantry). My sorceress with the MURDER SWORD died due to some lucky over watch rolls, and first turn mishaps ended up crippling my advance while a thunder fire cannon tore squads to shreds.

Despite the broken garbage I encountered in this game it ended up being fairly close. I secured one objective and my opponent the other. We both slayed the warlord, and we play first blood as a capture the flag, so the unit that gets first blood will then pass that along to a unit that kills it.

It came down to his final grav centurion making 5 5+ invulnerable saves on the last turn to not capture the first blood point back, which would have won me the game.

It was a lot of fun, many rules were broken, and mistakes were made. Next time it will be different.

I like the concept of capture the flag for first blood! Definitely a bit of fun.

How did the centurion get a 5++? They don't come with one like terminator armour.

Good to hear the game was close in the end despite a tough opponent.

I personally don't enjoy games that large. I prefer 1500 with the occasional 1850/2000. Especially if you don't have enough models for the limit without having to pull in dregs.

I find Google photos is ok for pics these days. Mainly because all the other hosts are that bad. Or you could just use the b&c host.

The blood trophy (as we call it) makes things a lot more fair and dynamic, suddenly one of your units becomes a kill point so it's often best to try to make sure a durable one gets it.

Some sort of warp shenanigans with Tigereous and two other librarians in a formation making everything very difficult.

I only brought about half of my troops out to that battle, I need to assemble / fix the rest and all of the fast attack and heavy support things I still have laying arround in box. I wanted to play with the new toys, the hell hammer didn't get a good game there but yesterday it, and my fliers, tabled an elder player and his I invisible wraithknight.

I have so many troops to paint now, plus I got a small order of DKOK in, I think I need an airbrush next.

Against such a strong list it wasn't going to be easy! Are there any things you picked up on from the game? Things you could have done better, or units you might like to add?

Didnt see the reply for some reason, but yes. Namely bubble wrap all the important units, and if you want to play against someone who is willing to abuse the rules don't feel bad about bringing the broken stuff from your army.
