Fantastic! That cross doesn't look bad at all. If I had to critique one thing it'd be the legion symbol, it looks a little like a paw of sorts. Could just be the perspective however.

Need to treat myself some vanguard veterans, those legs are so dynamic.

I feel ya on those research papers, they just suck the life right out of you! (so thankful I'm done with all that :happy.:)

As promised, here's another angle of the shoulder icon.

Now that I'm looking at it again, I can definitely see where you guys are coming from, but at least for me it's good enough.

Also managed to finish off the Dreadnought. No name as of yet, but I'll think of something, or ask someone to name him for me.

I did the bloody handprint because all of my Fists models so far have incorporated blood somewhere, and I wanted to continue that trend. I'm not exactly sure what I was thinking with the other leg, though.

I am not a fast painter. Nor a good one. Mediocre and slow, that's me, and proud of it. :D :P

Also, would anyone like it if I posted a step-by-step of my yellow recipe?

I love a lot of things about this thread, Psycho. The weathering and blood, the concept of "the burden," the fluff... but I think my favorite part may be the use of that Skitarii helmet on the meltagunner. So simple, yet it changes the entire character of the mini.

I'd be interested in a yellow recipie. I collect them like the skulls of the Fists legionnaires ;)

Liking the melta guy, looks like a proper breacher imo. Personally I wonder how he might look if you replaced the chainsword with a shield :whistling:

But great work nonetheless :tu:

Thanks mate! I have to say, I do *love* the heads from the Skitarii kits on Space Marines, they can really give a lot of character in the right places.

But yeah, I'll do a breakdown of my color scheme sometime this week (probably.) Glad you like the melta chap! I don't have plans to do a Breacher unit anytime soon though, but it's possible near the end of the year I might get down to building a phalanx or two.

@Aeternas: That I did, I suppose. :D

Anyways, not much to report, but I wanted to show you something I managed to get my hands on today. Three reasons I'm excited about it: One, I only paid $25 for it (about GBP15 for you backwards people across the pond, ;)) which is less than half of what the modern GW version costs in the States and a third what the FW version costs, two, it lends my army a really nice retro feel that I'm very fond of, and three, it was (apparently) originally painted in an Iron Warriors scheme. Oh, the irony is tangible, isn't it. :P

Behold, the original Deimos pattern Vindicator!

I mean, there's a lot of cleanup work to do, and I'm expecting the rebuild to be an absolute bitch, but still. I'm really hyped about adding this to the Storm Battalion. It'll be awesome!

I am slowly getting the 775th stamp of approval ready for that vindicator. Such is the level of faith I have in you.

Yeah, it needs a lot of work. I managed to break it down into most of its parts early before going to see a performance of Les Misérables, and during the entire thing I was dreading having to rebuild up the absolute pile of thunder :censored: that is this model. I'm also missing the front top, so I'll have to do a bunch of plasticard/kitbashing for that, and then I have to fill all the gaps of the model. Of course, before I do all that, I first have to remove the buckets of superglue that the original owner used on it.

But I'll do it! It may not be entirely fun, and I'm definitely going to be cussing like a sailor during some points, but mark my words, the damn thing will be in some state of order by the end of the ETL. Probably not painted, but in some miserable state of finished assembly. And then I'll be able to paint it! And then I'll be happy! Because I'll have a finished, ancient, Vindicator!

That's a big coincidence, because some months ago I also got an old vindicator for cheap, and I had to break it down and remove the paint (ultramarines). Right now I have it reassembled (though it needs a new dozer blade, and the back hatch) and undercoated, awaiting to be fully repaired and painted. It was (and will be) a lot of work, but it'll be worth it when I finish it, and I'm sure it will be for you too.

Well, I've been trying all weekend to write some fluff for this guy, but I haven't been able to (damn you writer's block!) so I present to you Sharpshooter Tancred Kijika, Consul-Vigilator of the Imperial Fists 284th Company.

Thanks for looking.

Nice use of the ISM :smile.:

And really cool tank you have there. Good to see the next generation digging the older tanks. True beauties!

Thanks!

She is beautiful, isn't she. I credit my appreciation for older models in general in no small part to the book Heroes for Wargames by Stewart Parkinson. If you haven't ever read it, it's a great book published in 1986, I believe, and while not an actual GW publication, it does take a pretty in-depth look into Citadel Miniatures inner workings, replete with ogles of concept art, images of the professional's workstations, and theories on painting and sculpting technique. It was my first introduction to the hobby, and I would recommend it to anyone with even a mild interest in the history of miniatures.

Obviously, in terms of pure technical quality regards detail and such, we've come a long way since then. But those old sculpts do have a certain character, a particular je ne sais quoi that I love, and so I leap at any chance I can to acquire older models for my armies. Of particular interest to me right now are the 2nd Edition Tactical Marines with the metal bodies and the plastic arms, which I've been watching on Ebay to get at a reasonable price at some point, and also a few of the metal Armor through the Ages marines. Those, though, I'll probably just break down and order the resin versions of, if I can't find something sane.

Thanks, bro. Glad to hear you like him! I will get 'round to writing some fluff for him at some point, since I already have a rough idea in mind, but I just can't get it down in paper or digital right now.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey look, Psycho actually got off his lazy ass and painted his Contemptor. Meet Corrin Martel, Ironbound of the 284th Storm Battalion.

I hope to have some more painted stuff for you guys soon. I've got my finals coming up, though, plus my ETL vow for the Chaos faction and then a trip to Mexico at the end of June, so I'll be pretty busy. I do *love* this army, so I'll do my very best to make time for that.

Also, sorry for not posting any fluff. My computers in the shop right now because of a busted power supply, and it's got all my background notes on it.

Thanks for looking!

And before anyone gets on my case about using Mark VII armor during the Heresy, I would like to point out that this army is set during the Siege of Terra, and point out the following quote from the Index Astartes Apocrypha, from an article written by Rick Priestly himself on Space Marine armor, originally published in WD129:

While the final battle for Mars was underway the Imperium, realising the planet would eventually fall, set about duplicating the munition production lies back on Earth. The armour development teams from Mars were transferred wholesale to continue the development program and incorporate their latest work into a new armor type. As Horus's forces finally overcame the defenders of Mars new Mark 7 armoured suits started to reach the Space Marines on Earth and the Moon.

Sorry about the brief post. I've got a bit of a migraine and it's making writing, especially on a screen, pretty difficult.

Thanks for reading!

I keep telling myself my Ultramarines don't need additional support, I don't need to spend the money....but damn your project makes it hard. Those guys are gonna look fantastic in yellow!

I was planning on using some mk7 myself, just for the heck of it (variety is a wonderful thing).

Awww, thanks dude. It's great to hear that I can manage to inspire other people that much. Regarding Mark VII armor, I've written some of my thoughts below.

Awesome stuff, mate! Lovely Vigilator too. Can't wait to see the Mk VII in your yellow, there just isn't enough MK VII in the HH format :smile.:

Thanks mate! Glad you like Tancred, the 30th Birthday Marine is definitely shaping up to be one of my favorite models of all time.

Now, on the subject of Mk VII, I have mixed feelings. While it's true that I've used some in my army, and thus I would be a hypocrite if I said that I don't think people should use any in their army, I really don't think people should take using Mk VII lightly, without serious consideration, nor do I think it necessarily has a place in every army. I especially don't think that it should simply be used as a cheap alternative for the older marks, especially considering that Mk IV armor is now available quite cheaply as a direct result of the release of Betrayal at Calth. I don't think it has a place in every army because of the passage I quoted above. As I read it, it seems to state that the Mark VII armor was only issued widely among those Loyalists fighting in the Sol system, late in the war. Whilst I don't think this is an absolute prohibition against Traitors, Legions not present at Terra, or armies set earlier on in the Heresy (a few suits, either prototypes or the real deal, could have made it out or been captured by servants of the Warmaster) they should be used sparingly. Only Loyalist armies present at Terra should really have them in any wide numbers. But hey, that's just my opinion. There are lots of great 30k armies out there that use lots of Mk VII, and  that's perfectly alright. The Heresy's big enough to allow for that sort of thing anyway. It's just a slight pet peeve of mine.

Also, just remembered that I said I would do a step-by-step breakdown of my Fists paintjob. I'll get on that this weekend. Should probably be ready around Monday or Tuesday.

Cheers everyone!
