Thanks Slips! Mako, I managed to find the scheme here.  It doesn't look bad, but it's probably easiest with an airbrush.

ts undercoat black then:

-spray undercoat army painter gun metal

-zenithal spray undercoat AP platemail

-drybrush runefang steel

-extreme highlight Vallejo air aluminium

-wash cassandora yellow

-wash again

-glaze top areas lamentors yellow:glaze medium 2:1

-repeat above

-weather/highlight with platemail

So, that's a possibility. I'm still leaning towards imitating Hyena's MM scheme (as best I can).

Actually, due to its nature of just layering shades and glazes over a silver base, its pretty easy to do by brush too; you just wont really get the Zenithal Highlights.

Its how I did these 3 in particular:

This one being specifically a test of the Cassandora & Lamenters Yellow parts over a Gold Base instead of Silver.

I'd settle for a nice, industrial yellow myself. Oh wait, I already did

Looking forward to some colours to match the rest of your marvellous work!

Funny you should mention that, I went up to the FLGS today for an Apoc game (was playing with foul xenoforms, so no details  ) and picked up a couple items:

Already had some Averland, hopefully I'll have some time this week to play around with a tester or two.

@Slips: Hmmm, guess I'll have to try it now. Thanks for the examples, love the Cataphractii dude.

Patiently awaiting. Like a good little soldier.

See, you're learning what it means to be a Fist of the 284th now

I've always wondered what lamenter yellow actually did

Far as I understand it, the Citadel glazes are very thin paints that either intensify their color if layered over the same color, or change the tone of the color beneath if layered over a different tone. But my knowledge of paints is limited, so if someone can explain it better, please do :smile.:

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to paint today, but I did have twenty minutes to sit down and blutack together a mock-up of the leader of an allied detachment to my Fists:

Still have to source an empty right hand to rest on his waist, but I'm sure I'll find one somewhere :biggrin.: Any comments or critique are welcome, since he is completely blutacked right now.

Of course it figures this particular moment of inspiration comes on the last day of the Blood Angels March of the Legions event  Irony really can be a :censored: sometimes. :tongue.:

Thanks for the comments, guys. I asked the question of where to find open right hands in the P&M Questions forum, and ended up deciding to get a Devastator box for the bits I need.

Sadly, I haven't yet had time to paint due to a sudden deluge of homework, but hopefully this weekend I'll have something to show.

  • 2 weeks later...

More responses!

Noice. Just freakin noice.

Thanks man, means a lot coming from you.

No paint? For shame.

Also, recipe.

No focus? For shame. ;) I'd love to put some paint on models, but the quarter is coming to an end and I have my finals at the beginning next week, so I haven't really made time to. Next week after my finals, though, I will do my utmost to get some paint on plastic.

I actually saw your recipe back when you uploaded it, and I have it saved for reference, but four layers of yellow over a black undercoat? I really don't have the patience. Thanks for linking it, though. :tu:

I'm multi-tasking, private. You should learn the difference before giving lip. :tongue.:

And it only takes a couple of coats over a white undercoat.

Soldier. Quarters... You say quarters...? That shouldn't stop a loyal son of Dorn.

Since there is no paint, writing maybe?

Right with you, brother. This lack of progress is unacceptable.

I do have a couple papers to write today, but I'll try to write some story tonight. I'll deffo be painting over the weekend, though.

For you, Dos, a mini-update, to show that I haven't entirely let this project slide in favor of the blue one.

And to show to my brothers of the B&C that, yes, I actually do paint once in a blue moon. :tongue.:

That's 3 layers of Averland Sunset over a grey basecoat, then washed with Seraphim Sepia, then layered with Yriel Yellow, with a glaze of Lamenters drying in this picture, too. After that, might do another highlight, but that'll probably wait until I've started other colors so I can see how it balances out. You'll probably notice that I didn't get entirely even coats, but in real life it ends up looking like battlewear, and with the chipping and stuff I was planning on it should end up looking pretty damn cool.

Anyways, I've got a question for y'all. I was thinking about doing black shoulderpads to mark out my Grenadier (Veteran) squads in this army. As much as I like the idea, I have some doubts about how it would look once put into effect. So, I'm asking you guys. Black shoulderpads? Yay or nay?

In any regard, thank y'all for the support. I'm still *really* excited about doing this project, and I'm incredibly thankful for the enthusiasm with which this has been received. Fluff is in the works for the next main update, which will come as soon as this guy is finished. Until then, sit tight, hold the fort, keep the home fires burning. And if we're not back by dawn...call the president Emperor! :biggrin.:

Thanks for the response, guys. I've taken your recommendation and run with it and I really like it.

For whatever reason, the yellow looks really flat in these pictures, despite the fact that it looks nothing like this in real life. When I make my weekly hobby shop run on Saturday, I'll make sure to get some Dorn Yellow to put in some extreme edge highlights on the bridge of his nose and whatnot. All the other colors don't have any highlighting or layers done yet, though, which is why they all look very flat.

Also, freehanded Legion insignia:

I really should have waited til I finished everything else on the model, but I wanted to see if my theoretical easy method of doing the Fist symbol would work, and it basically did. It'll be incredibly easy to redo later if I screw it up.

Yellow generally tends to get washed out in photos sadly! Like the Helmet of my Deredeo. Its white but has the ridges highlighted in Dorn Yellow. Cant even see it in photos :p

Its kinda why my Yellow has gone a more...orange...route with a drybrush of Auric Armor gold applied afterwards for that Golden-Yellow shine.

As-is, he looks good and the yellow is solid! Dont be afraid to experiment in painting yellow though!
